I think this song, like Wester, is about a relationship he/they have to keep quiet about. I think the whole AOD album is about a relationship, and the ups and downs of impending fame...after all, this is the last album before STS hit when they started to really get noticed. "Now ending discreetly, just like a hidden sin, as I go under please tuck me in. Make me invisible." - I think they have to hide the relationship from others. Thus, it is a "secret show". "This hidden explosion calls for a wandering cast with no direction" - This relationship results in others drawn into the process of keeping this relationship a secret from outsiders. "Enter all monsters let us twist another fairy tale. Go kill the lights, we'll glow till morning comes. I'll say goodnight and bow to everyone. Then we go under." Outsiders are present, so they have to pretend the relationship does not exist. So, once they all leave, or the show/concert is over, and he "says goodnight & bows to everyone", he is able to spend precious time with this girl. The "monsters" are those who are outside the circle, causing them to pretend the relationship does not exist, for whatever reason. And, fairytales generally are stories of real-life problems, often with implausible happy endings. When another obstacle is in the way, they invent yet another fairytale of a normal relationship where they can be out in the open, without repercussions. "We'll glow till morning comes.then we go under" refers to getting away to meet and spending precious time together before they need to go back hiding their secret. "The beauties are sleeping as fruit just rots away. Today go hungry. Let it begin. Make me invincible. There was a weeping I carried down today, a sigh worth keeping. Deep within divinity let's start another secret show". I think this refers to how it is painful they cannot see one another and he wants to be brave enough to acknowledge this relationship to outsiders. The girl is upset and he takes it to heart. I think when he speaks of 'deep within divinity we'll start another secret show' refers to getting married (in a church, since divinity refers to religion). "No need to fear here in the secret show. No need to worry I am just another monster. In you, I'll see me, in the secret show." I think this refers to how she does not have to worry when they are alone, but he is a "monster" since he keeps things quiet from others. I think this relationship has to be kept a secret since Davey (as well as the rest of the band) keep their private lives very hidden. You NEVER hear about a personal relationship of Davey's....Jade, though, mentions living with his girlfriend in the booklet that comes with the box set. If you google "Davey's/Jade's/Adam's/Hunter's girlfriend, wife etc. nothing comes up. Part of their "act" is to keep everyone guessing. Seems to me the relationship between Davey and this girl was developing during the AOD time frame, when they were on the brink of fame. By STS, the fame had destroyed the relationship - you can't deny there is ALOT of anger on that album! Whether they were married, I don't know, but he was wearing a ring on the left hand ring finger during that time period. Yeah, he was wearing other ones too, but the one on the ring finger was always there. I am one of those who think the tracks on STS are backwards....the whole album actually starts with "The time imperfect" and ends with Miseria Cantare. I believe the whole album is a self exploration of feelings - from sadness to anger to acceptance. Around Silver and Cold (going backwards), he starts feeling alternating acceptance & anger. In the video, when he throws his watch in the water, he takes a ring off his right ring finger & tosses it in, too - the finger where one wears a ring if divorced. I think Silver and Cold is about one finding religion as a coping method. |

I think this song is about a relationship he has to keep hidden with a girl. They can only see each other when no one else is around to see the truth. You have to admit - part of the attraction to Davey is wondering what team he plays on. I think the whole gay thing is a sham - just like the glam rock scene in the 70's with Bowie, Marc Bolan. They weren't gay - they just acted that way, and fans ate it right up. Look at the name of his new clothing line -"Glitterboy". Enough said. Don't get me wrong - I am not at all knocking what he is doing. I don't give a shit if they all start dressing up like Gwar or something like that - they'll always be my favorite band. If he started walking around with a girlfriend, think about how unpopular THAT concept is!!! Although I try to act all cool and mature, I have to admit I would be not be thrilled with the whole girlfriend thing, since one day he is going to come to my hick town & take ME away! (yeah right!!!!!) So, I guess this whole ruse (again, this is my opinion) brought on by managers, PR people, etc. works for me, and many, many others. Keeps one wondering! The "I can feel you dreaming of me" line is so cool - to me, he is saying that although they are not together, he knows he is first & foremost in her thoughts (the lucky bee-yatch she is!!) Without each other, they are lonely, so when they meet, it is "beyond the lonely" - relating to the feelings that are present most of the time. (I am having trouble putting this interpretation in a sentence that makes sense, so I am trying the best I can) I also get the sense that he (at that time) was struggling with becoming a well-known band. He is learning the price he has to pay for fame. I think the song "Days of the Phoenix" relates to this as well, when he talks of "wanting to stay" when he was a "ghost and no one could see me" - and falling between yesterday and fantasy. I really think the Art of Drowning album relates to this concept as a whole. The quandry between staying small and local, or going for fame. Once again back to Days of the Phoenix (yeah, I know this is not the song, but I am off on a tangent, so deal), I think the figure on the bed, beckoning to sleep, offering a dream, is actually a metaphor for fame. I used to think it was referring to fame as making a deal with the Devil, and the Devil was the figure on the bed, but I am more convinced it is just fame. The girl he is referring to in Wester, I also believe is the "girl on the wall always waiting for me, and she was always smiling". - Ties the two songs together in my mind, reinforcing the concept that he is caught between fame and anonymity. (maybe I'll go discuss Days of the Phoenix next??) |

| AFI – The Prayer Position Lyrics | 20 years ago |

"Pushed to our knees so let us pray" - religion being forced upon the unwilling by those who blindly follow all the Christian/Catholic/etc. dogma without question. Those having religion shoved down their throats basically go along with it for now, but are seeking another avenue; one not so rigid that one may question and speak their mind. "I can't help but fear, look to my species and tremble, to think that God is just..." - I think this relates to the millions of people who refuse to question their religion and think for themselves, and just how frightening that concept happens to be. "And in the distance there's a gathering that no longer seems so far away." - this may refer to a number of people who ARE willing to take a stand and question the outdated, rigid concepts of an established religion. |

Hmmmm...I think this song, along with the whole album, is about spirituality, loss of faith, redemption, atonement. I don't think AFI would write songs, especially for a whole album about a loss of a relationship - that is what the "Top 40" artists are for - know what I mean?? All the Top 40 songs whine about love, or lack thereof. AFI is definitely NOT like that - they actually write meaningful songs. To explain: Silver - metal of purity. Has been throughout the ages. Think silver bullets, silver crucifixes - used to stop something impure & evil. Cold - best way I can describe it is - think if you get a burn, cold is soothing. "Silver and Cold" - pure and soothing. "Your sins into me" - this is what God, Jesus, a priest, minister, etc says to someone seeking forgiveness - by confessing sins, they get absolution. Referring to a voice as "rapturous" is usually describing one from God, angels, etc. SO - I think this song is actually "sung" by TWO people. The first verse (I came here by day, etc) describes someone seeking guidance - the person comes upon ?God?, who makes him feel pure & comforted. The only other part I think are sung by the person looking for absolution is the "Rapturous voice....tremble a prayer...I'll beg for forgiveness". Everything else is by God (or whoever, Jesus???). It is God referring to the person seeking absolution as "my beautiful one". God takes the sins in & makes the person pure. "I will paint you in silver .....I will wrap you in cold" - I will make you pure & comforted. At first, the whole album seems like a loss of a relationship - that is way too superficial. I think it relates alot more to a loss of faith. "The Great Disappointment", I think, is pretty obvious. Enough said there. "The Leaving Song II", I think, is someone rejecting faith, since it seems to keep failing him. I am NOT a religious person, but I think this whole album leans that way. Again, I don't think Jade (he IS the principal songwriter now, after all) and Davey would waste time on superficial things - they'll leave that to Justin Timberlake and the other poseurs out there. One last thing - for those who think AFI "sold out" - OH PLEASE! Do you think even 5% of the people watching MTV understand, or even bothered to understand what the song is about?? If they think it is about relationships - great - stay there & watch TRL every day. This album attracted even MORE people, some who understand & get the message! If they wanted to sell out, they would be doing songs "featuring" Nelly, J-Lo, et al. Thats all! |
