I think it's about a guy that doesn't want to committ, and the woman is not okay with that, but she has sex with him because she keeps hoping he will fall for her. He already has, but can't admit it to himself. I hate men. |

I'm glad to know there's some sane people out there. I think it's pretty darn obvious this song is about falling in love with a married woman ("ring around your finger", "shiny band of gold") and all the emotional turmoil generated by it.
Some lunatic on you tube was accusing me of emotional immaturity because I didn't think the song was about occultism/sorcery...lol...please, most often songs are just about what they seem to be, famous musicians are not froma different planet, they usually write about universal themes, such as unriquitted or troubled love affairs, especially comercially successful ones like Sting. |

wow, that's so different from what this song means to me! If you take into account that it's in the Pretty in Pink soundtrack then it certainly makes sense. To me, however, it is just a song about being different. |

To me this song is definitely about drug addiction and trying to break the (drug of choice) habit. I can totally relate to it. "I don't know how I got this way, I'll never be alright so I'm breaking the habit tonight". He locks himself in his room so that he won't try to score. |
