I'm just waiting for some fundamentalist to find a connection to christianity in this.

Nah, why wait, I'll give them a hint. This song is all about religion.

"I find it strange that no one interpreted "all the while, the good lord smiled, and looked the other way" as an act of forgiveness on the part of Jesus. "

Did you completely skip this part?

crying out to jesus
but lord i've always done what's right
and all the while
the good lord smiled
and looked the other way

What would the good lord need to forgive if he's always done what's right?

This is a complex song because you must differentiate the narrator from the ones he is describing. The narrator is, of course, thrice. This song, however, may not reflect thrice's views and it may be a representation of something else.

Anyway, there's a motif of false hope in this song.

"It feints at love, betrays our trust"
"We'll never find true answers from a wishing well"
"We implore empty skies because"

These are examples of the narrator describing the aforementioned motif of false hope i.e. religion. Why religion? When people pray or ask God for something, they look towards the 'empty skies'. When wishing, you hope god will fulfill your wish, like a 'wishing well'.

What the religion arguments hinge upon is this quote, "The truth we've found in all we see
Points to design".

Now, this isn't the narrator commenting as a distant observor anymore. Now he's one of us who was betrayed by religion, since he was born:

"So feed us all another lie, To still our thoughts, appease our pride".

Without a doubt, religion stills your thoughts. Why? Because you stop questioning your purpose, your origin, etc. And of course, it apeases your pride in the fact that you're all god's special 'children'.

However, the signs may point to design, as the narrator said. But he then says "our logic reads like notes from tainted autopsy". Thus, we see that our logic in deciphering the 'signs' was tainted.

etc. You can read it however you want, it's a free world. Some opinions are refuted, while others are weak.

@Wackdee

>"We implore empty skies because
Our hearts hold room for no one else
--We hope the skies are empty (there is no God) because we're too infatuated with ourselves to love God."

So the song says "We implore empty skies".. meaning we look up to empty skies looking for help. Thus, the writer of the song is saying that the sky is empty, which leads you to the logical conclusion that he's saying there is NO god there. Rather than rely upon your fellow man and woman, you implore EMPTY skies to aid you during your plight.

Wow, I read it completely backwards, compared to you. Funny how a christian perspective makes this song seem to be preaching God, whereas an agonistic (my) perspective makes this song seem anti-God.

Although, I can see how this song can be read to be religious. I just find those 2 lines specifically protest the existence of god.

Alright, I just have a few questions and comments. First, obviously there's a correlation to "peace-keeping" in two large oil producing countries (Afghanistan and Iraq) and rising gas prices. Where I live, gas has reached costs of 90cents/LITRE.

Anyway, let's go ahead and say it was right of America to go and bomb the shit out of a country and to arrest their leader, why the fuck are they still there? It's obvious a lot of people are rebelling against the Americans, so why do they continue to stay?

Somebody earlier mentioned people are still signing up to get a piece of the action. Alright, let's go fucking take out civillians who are fighting for their country. Best. action. ever.
