Regina Spektor – Eet Lyrics 16 years ago
This reminds me of forgetting what someone's face looks like just a short time after having last seen them. Someone you really enjoy, like your favorite song. It's upsetting but you can't do anything about it, you're just flabbergasted and you start with the outline, and try to move on to their hair, and pick out certain features that will trigger your memory to come flooding back.

It's like having something taken away from you so suddenly and unexpectedly, and wanting it back but forgetting how it feels... all you know is that you enjoyed it, and it's gone.

I can't believe more people haven't commented on this song!
"Say, someone made a fool of me 'fore I could show 'em how it's done"

I love it. Middle Cyclone is an incredible album.

Oops, that was supposed to say "out of van".

I'm pretty sure it's "Ativan", not "our of van".
Ativan is an anti-anxiety medication. It just makes a little more sense.

Amanda Palmer – Ampersand Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is talking about a complicated relationship that she's trying to avoid turning into a tragedy. She doesn't want to save anyone; that's not what love is about. The first verse really shows how she feels about her role as a savior ("And though I am no used to them, I do my part by simply smiling").
It seems like the person the song is about is all ready to turn them into a Romeo & Juliet story. That's where the "Ampersand" part comes in, I think. She doesn't want someone who will kill themselves if she doesn't love them; she doesn't want someone who can't live without her.

And the part about the fires is something I really connect with - I interpreted it as her saying that she has spent all this time beating herself up about how she once misunderstood what it is to be strong. She put herself through hell emotionally because she thought it would give her tougher skin, or just make her a stronger person.
"As I wake up to a cough..." sort of ties it back together. It's obviously a metaphor - she's flame retardant.

It's a really beautiful song. I saw her perform last Friday in NYC and I cried when she performed this one. It was really moving.

Jack Johnson – Times Like These Lyrics 20 years ago
he says at the beginning of one of the live recordings of this song that it's about all of the american flags on cars.

take what you will from that, but in simpler terms, there have always been these things that we're just beginning to notice now that we're at war with another nation.
