| Placebo – Lady Of The Flowers Lyrics

These refernces sound very domestic,
''Scuse me, I apologize
she's got vacum cleaner eyes
suck you in
she's got magazines, filled with pear pies'
Perhpas this song is about a lonely housewife whose husband does not respect her,
'he spends the afternoon, between your thighs
how's that for gratitude'
But likes her 'attitude' because she stays in all day reading cookery magazines and vaccuming. 'Blouse' strikes me as a very 1950s word, and the entire song smacks somewhat of "white picket fence"
stereotyped perfection.
The 'electronic haze' and 'seemed to last for hours, seemed to last for days' could either be referring to drudgery and monotony of her life, or could be a reference to some sort of anti-depressant drug.
The repetition of 'I apologize' makes it sound as though somebody is telling her she could do more with her life, and trying not to offend her. This song could be an attack on stereottypes within society and how we should not allow ourselves to fall into them or judge other people in this way. |

Celluloid is what they make guitar picks from, maybe 'celluloid loves John Fruiscante' because he's so good at guitar. Ok, that's far fetched, sorry..... |

Yeah, I agree with vrai and Strange Child. It's funny because a lot of people dismiss placebo as very angsty, but a lot of the time it's just ironic. Brian has also said that a had a sort of "second adolescence" in his twenties, so it's like he's laughing at the angst from the inside, rather than looking at it from the outside. |

It sounds like it's about Capitalism vs Communism and how normal people are actually affected by this, not just politicians |

I't s great how he wants to grow up to be something that lowers somthing down. Becoming taller just to make something else lower or smaller or whatever, I like the irony of that |

I think of this song as being from the point of view of a woman in a relationship with domestic violence. She's looking for a haven away from it, both physically 'Excuse me but can I be you for a while', and mentally. Maybe the mermaid reference could be because she feels that as a mythical creature she could escape. |

It's interesting that they chose a very different type of bruise for the video, I'm not quite sure why.....any ideas? |

Didn't Brian grow up in a re-born Christian household that was very strict? I think I read that he had to go and see a priest every week and that when he was at college he received a letter from this priest telling him he'd lost the way but would find it again, or somthing similar. Maybe this is about the pressure he felt from his family as his views contradicted his religion - 'If you deny this
Then it's your fault
That God's in crisis' |

I think Brian said once that 'smile would make me sneeze' was a reference to really disliking someone to the point where you were allergic to them, and, it seems, even their expressions |

Yeah, and proffessing complete love for someone, as though they'll be everything for this person - 'I'll be your father, I'll be your mother,
I'll be your lover, I'll be yours' |

The line 'and I can't stop smiling, and I can't stop now', always reminds me of people creating an image for you, always thinking you're happy, and how it's really hard to show you're sad when people don't see you like that. |

This song makes me think of enjoying yourself after you've had a load of exams or something, like 'champagne supernova' is a science reference and one day you might be caught under all the work, like a 'landslide'. 'Where were you while we were getting high' is like people asking each other to just enjoy themselves. |

This song reminds me of being a teenager in London, especially these lines, 'The girls were on their mobile trying to get reception' and 'live a blonde hair in jeans, holds her tight'. In some ways I love it, but in some ways it's really depressing, it reminds me of the things I don't like about the way the world's 'supposed' to work, and what teenagers are 'supposed' to do. Perhaps that is just me being cynical..... |

It's cool how the sex references are so traditional but the message is very much of our time. I'm don't only think that it's about sexuality though, it's about the way you see yourself and other people. How you identify yourself in terms of gender, not just sexuality. |

To me this song isn't self centred, it's somebody reminding themselves not to go to far into the decadence that fame can bring (hence the cocaine reference) and to remember the people who for various reasons couldn't forfill their dreams. I don't neccessarily think that it's from Brian's point of view, maybe he's putting himself in someone else's position. |

| Placebo – Ask For Answers Lyrics

|
I always thought this song was about a confused friendship. The two people aren't actaully romantically committed to each other 'These bonds are shackle free', but they're still wrapped in 'lust' and perhaps there's 'jealousy' of each other's lovers. They feel that in the other's estimation they're 'always coming second best'. Perhaps they think that something outside can help them, 'ask the sea for answers', but they know they have to do it themselves. |

I thought it might be about a girl going into the army 'be a good soldier' and 'green limousine', a tank, perhaps? Snatches of it make me think about the idea of blurred gender lines and being obliged and expected to be either tough- 'soldier', or pretty and delicate- 'ribbons'. |

The lyrics were translated by a French author who I can't now find the name of. The line 'Surgissent les fantômes de notre lit' is a nice link to the title of the album which the English version is on. |

Placebo did an interview in Tokyo and said, ' I must admit to having a fondness for Asian people', this doesn't have to be Japanese people at all, but as the comment was made whilst in Japan and about Japanese women, perhaps it has something to do with the Japanese reference. |

Anyone else see how the lyrics relate to the Lord of the Flies?
'Place for us to dream' - the idea of a paradise
'Slip and stumble at my first offenses' - descent in savargery etc.
I dunno |
