This is one of my favorite QA songs....sigh... This song is about JonBenet Ramsey, the six-year old American beauty queen who was murdered on Christmas day in 1996. Her brother and both of her parents were suspected in turn for her death. By the way, does anyone know what Katie Jane sings between the lines "Bruising is his cause" and "behind closing doors"? |

Katie Jane is *divine*. I see this as a sad song about the death of a relationship. 'Billy' takes along a girl for a ride with the promise of commitment. She realises that he's not all sweet dreams and sunsets, and she's in too deep to let go unhurt. He betrays her and cataclysmically breaks her heart, justifies himself for closure and goes away like nothing happened ('threw a little dirt over her and started for home'). But breaking a heart deliberately (Polly's murder) is one of the worst pains, and so Billy owes a debt to the Devil. What an amazing voice/song. |

I feel like this song is a bit about masochism, but also about loneliness, ie the 'surrender' to realising that she can't identify other people in the same way that they do among each other. I think she's rejecting the human in favour of her ideal (abstract or otherwise) that will allow her to be all the things she desires, but that will never happen because she 'only makes love to Jesus' - she will only freely give in to someone that is more powerful than she could be. Queen Adreena is amazing. This song is perfection. |
