Mae – We're So Far Away Lyrics 20 years ago
i am not assuming they are a christian band...they are. if you want to listen to some more obvious examples of their christianity expressed in their music listen to embers and envelopes, or Tisbury Lane where he actually talks about Jesus. also, i did not write that to support christianity in any way. I was just offering an opinion based on what i know about the band and the lead singer. i think your interpretation of the song works very good also, but be careful when you use the word "obviously"... there is always more than one way to look at things.

Mae – We're So Far Away Lyrics 20 years ago
I think this song is about their music but i dont think it is about becoming famous for it. The song seems to me like he is talking to God who is the "you" in this song(Mae is considered a christian rock band by some people). When he uses the words "us" and "we" he could be refering to the band. in the beginning he is remembering when he first became a christian and God came into his life. the fact that he is asking God, "Did you know what you were doing?" and then says "well i dont really think so" is a playful way for him to say that what he has now with his music is so beautiful to him that he couldnt imagine it being planned. The everglow described by the lead singer is the drive and energy we feel when we do something that feels right for us, even if it doesnt make sense or seem logical for us. He went to college after high school because he thought thats what everyone did. But when Mae started he felt the "everglow" and dropped everything he had planned for his life to put all his energy into Mae. in this song he says "and the moments magic swept us away" showing how they got so consumed with the band that everything else in their life seemed to be "swept away" and they changed. "And a young man’s dream was almost seen so plain" seems to be his feeling that at first their music was seen "plainly" and the message that they wanted to get across to their listeners didn't seem to be there. "when was the night that showed us the sign revealed by the sky to leave all behind" seems to be him trying to remember how all of this started and what exactly inspired him to "leave all behind" and "reach for the stars." I think that when he says "its so close but we're so far away" it is his way of saying that the message they want to give their listeners is so close and beautiful and real to them, but that they are so far away from capturing it in words and in their music.
*just one idea though. the beautiful thing about art is that it can be interpreted in so many different ways and can mean whatever you want it to.*
