Elliott Smith had a damn good taste in choosing appropriate titles. A passing feeling is something we all feel at one time or another. Each song he writes seems to convey a single emotion that the rest of us looking up at him seem to forget about. He's waiting for some emotion to feel in the midst of an emptiness. It seems ridiculously simple but these are deep lyrics that everyone can empathize with. |

I want to clarify one of the lines: "one way love I took for ours" I'm not sure who these lyrics are directed towards but it seems like he is talking about an unrequited relationship that only he cares about. "i'm through trying now it's a big relief i'll be staying down where no one else gonna give me grief " those four lines suggest that he is going to give up on all relationships. If you think about it, it could also be a reference to suicide. I know that not all songs are about suicide but this song is one of the few that imply it. |

Division Day... I don't know how to describe it, but what he might be referring to is the time of death, or when the mind and soul separate from the body. This song is very much about parting with this world. He mentions suicide with a motive. |
