qnc is so damn good. this song is the epitome of the bitter one-sided breakup. 'my wishes remain the same: for steady hands to be held.' |

Maybe its harder for you to understand why certain people are so mad at against me's decision to sign onto Sire Records. If you had begun listening to against me when they just released their debut demo, and once knew them personally, and can remember basement shows where they were still playing only acoustic songs, you'd be more upset than you are now. If you've ever felt a sense of camaraderie singing along to songs like "those anarcho punks are mysterious", knowing that you too were going to one day absolve yourself from the capitalist bullshit society you were stuck in at the time and become something more than a nine to five worker for some corporation that doesnt do anything worth shit when you got older, then maybe you could understand why some exfans feel so betrayed. It's disappointing. It's like the disillusioned child who grows up and finds out people aren't as fucking good as they were told they are. What happens when our favorite bands who reinforced our decision not to let our lives be run by consumerism sell out to the same system they used to (and we still) fucking oppose? |

this is such a pretty song. i love the line "biting hard and crushing flowers", a reference to the poppy flower from which opiates like hydrocodone and oxy are derived from. |

| Smurf cat, the reference to the Laurel Tree has much more symbolism to it then you think. There is a classic ancient Greek myth that goes something like the following (once you read it, you'll understand what i mean by it being symbolic): Cupid the cherub was showing the God Apollo how powerful he was, and demonstrated this power by selecting two of his arrows, one of gold (which causes the target to fall deeply in love with the first person he/she sees), and another of lead (which causes the target to be repulsed by the first person he/she sees), and hitting the God Apollo with the golden one, and Daphne (a nymph) with the lead one at the same time, causing Apollo to fall madly in love with Daphne, who in turn was abhorred by the thought of ever loving him. He chased her around, and almost caught her when Daphne cried out to her father, the river God Peneus, to help her, and he did so by turning her into a Laurel tree. Apollo's love for her remained even though she was a tree, and his trademark of wearing a crown of leaves are those of a Laurel tree. I think when Conor says, "No Laurel tree, just green envy", he means that the Laurel tree, which is a coveted desire greatly loved, he means that he himself is unwanted. | |
