| I totally disagree. I think the song is satirical. Like he is making the point of oberving the 'signs' hail in summer, you know totally unignorable situatiuons, things that make you stop and think. Then the tention that that causes when the situstion is awquard i guess, when it feels like time is standing still or moving backwards because the answer or resolution is staring you in the face, like ice on your sunburn! He makes a comitment to do something, break the tention and resolve the issue (which is open to any situation, i feel, not just relationships) 'resolution wednesday' Yet contradicts this by setting his alarm for 3002! Showing our nature to run in fear of a situation blowing up in our face, you know. The way it is phrased in the song gives the listener the feeling of confidence which is juxstaposed to the message 'i'll be waiting for you' not a confident message, he is not fighting for the resolution, he is still waiting for it to resolve itself. Really, really clever, i think. It is such a realistic lyric, as we so often say we are going to go and do something, resolve something, make a move, yet dispite the tention and the push by society, fear gets the better of us. I love this song, my favourite Kisschasy song by far! | |

This song, to me, is just about life in general. About how you get caught up in so many little things and loose sight of the bigger picture, then when it all catches up with you you freak out and run away. It is the relisation that running from probelms only makes them that much worse when the enevitably catch up with you. It describes the feeling when you know this, but you don't know any other way to deal with it but to run. You can aply it to any setting, a relationship, work, school, friendships. That is what makes it so good i think, it is very generalised, yet incredibally personal at the same time. The acoustic version is much better, i love it! my second fave song of all time! |

It is about how adie is moving to the west coast to be with billie (he talked about it in some interview i watched) westbound sign! and also the line 'is tragedy 2000 miles away' fits with 2000 light years away, also about adie. I find that the entire insomniac albulm is over looked, mainstream fans think it is too harsh and the gilman st crowd are still bittercause green day actually had talent and made something of them selves. Oh and the whole albulm is a bitch about them. Whatever, it is jut a damn good song! |

I am addicted to this song. I can relate to it so well at the moment, it makes me cry every time i play it, but i can't stop playing it! I recently found out i am moving an hour away from my best friend next year, and we are so close, more like sisters. Telling her was the worst experince of my life and i wish the headphones could have delivered the words for me. Awww the song just makes me cry because it putis into words everything i am feeling right now. i love it. |

reading some of those coments hurt my head. Crap, some people really need to get a life, and a more extensive vocabulary. There are trillions of other ways to describe you dislike of something than to say 'FOB sucks donkey cock' or what ever other discusting phrases have been used. I have no problem with people sharing their opinions of things, but there is no need to sware, we get that you don't like some thing just from you saying. It was relesed as a single because (and this is straight from billie joe, if u saw storytellers on VH1 then u would know) He said that it was really the only song that didn't fit the story of the album. At first i though that it did but i see now that it doesn't cause of the lines about my father has come to pass! that does not fit the story because he mentions nothing about JOS's father in the story and doesn't he say in JOS that he has a step father. The mum's and BRAD's away? I dunno. But this song has fifty different meanings. Coz if your a real GD fan then u know it is about Billie's father but if u just listening to it (and watching the clip) then it changes meaning completly. has anyone noticed were are not even talken about the music any more. We are just dissing each other for what ever different beliefs we have. Come on guys you should have learnt in kinder that if you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all! If you do not like green day then that is fine, but you should be courdious of other peoples likes. You can express your dislike for a song or band with out every second word being fuck, or telling people that you think that someone should die you don't even know the people you can't deside weather they desurve to live or die! It is good to voice your opinions about stuff (which is what green day is doing in this song) but you can't expect everone to agree with you! You know what you believe so why don't we just stick to talking about what we think songs mean instead of critisizing people we don't even know! THANKYOU! When i check this again in afew days their should be no more harsh negitive comments about other people! All you lot talkin about how this is like just for publicity and how GD only did this song and alubm so that they would like be in the media again are all full of bullshit. Maybe im bias coz i recon GD are freakin awesomebut you all need to listen to the rest of the album! It is a rock opera, it is a consept album. It tells a story and this is only one song out of 11 + 2 almost 10 min songs. If you listen to the restof the songs then you have a better idea, and even if you don't i bet you will love GD all of a sudden. The whole album is not anti- bush, just that song! Also the song really doesn't bother me as much as it would americans coz im not american! | The more and more of these things i read the more i get confused about what the whole album means. I think that Green day are just the most amazing geniuses every to walk the earth! They write songs and put such an ifectious beat behind each one and have us siting around for hours and hours trying to figure out what it all means. I really don't think anyone knows what american idiot means except billie joe. He is the most amazing writer he comes up with the most out there discriptions of stuff and keep people listening to the cd over and over again until they understand it. I think i have given up on trying to figure it all out i am just going to listen to this cd now because it is the best! If any of you who are commenting on this don't have the cd (the actual cd, not downloaded songs, it has the words in the cover and little piceys and stuff!) Then you MUST get it. This song has apsolutly nothing to do with drugs (sorry) but doesn't! I tend to aggre with jesus of suburbia (the really long one) because, i think someone already said this but i going to just to be certain, novacaine is not really a drug. Not a illgal one any way. It is a type of anesthetic, commonly used by dentists, to numb parts of the body. (which i guess is why the 3rd line says 'its like a throbing tooth ache of the mind!) It is made from cocaine because in olden times cocaine was used as an anesthetic but had side affects such as people became addicted to it. Novacaine is like cocaine but is not addictive. But like i said the song is not about drugs, it is about how hard life can be at times. How you can have so many things happenig to you all at once and you don't know how to cope anymore. Jesus is falling in love and is being told 100's of different things all at once and the song is about him trying to decide what to do and when he can't he wants to block everything out and jimmy wants him to trust him so he does and now jimmy is in control. The fact that she's a rebel comes straight after this song on the album justifys that one of his problems is that he is falling in love with whatsername and is unsure of what would happen with them together, he is scared basicly, and next he is happy and excited because he thinks whatername is wonderful now! This is what i think if you think differently then tell me coz i would like to know what you think! |
