I think this song is about falling apart and wanting to get away, like the first two verses say. The next verse could be about how some people have religion when they start to fall apart and something to look forwar to. ("When you get to the promise land, you're gonna shake that eye's hand") The "outside, naked" verse could be how when you fall apart, you resort to the more basic things in life. Also, how the world will begin and end the same way, maybe implying that no matter what we do, it won't change the overall scheme of the world. The next verse is just about how complex and mysterious life is. ("Didn't know then was it a son was it a daughter? When it occurred to me that the animals are swimming Around in the water in the oceans in our bodies") The next verse could again be about how we can't change the course of the world. ("Well, the universe is shaped exactly like the earth if you go straight long enough you'll end up where you were.") It could be saying how no matter how you try to get away, you can't really escape life all together. Overall, I think it's about falling apart and trying to find a way out and/or something for comfort. Well, that's my 2 cents anyway. Feel free to disagree and I hope I brought some new ideas to the song. Cheers. |

I agree with ed_vedder, I think this song is about people dying at a young age. The first verse could be about a homeless person who dies for obvious reasons. The next verse could be about a drug deal gone wrong and one person got shot, a person commiting suicide, and someone else surviving a gun shot but not remembering anything so they're life is essentially gone anyway. I think the 50,000 names engraved in stone are about war. As for, "Most of their family and friends are still alive and doing time" could be about the family and friends still mourning their loss. That's my two cents anyway. |

My favorite lines. I love the first because it gives off a true vibe. It's wishful thinking but he's not saying he's certain about it and I think this uncertain attitude goes through everyone's head when they wish for something like that. (Being with someone until they're old, like a soul mate) I think the second is just saying how some things are what they are and can't be changed. Also, how the world keeps moving but if you have someone there for you, they can fill you in on what you miss sometimes. All together I think this is a great song. I think his voice brings out the passion in the song. |
