Local Natives – Breakers Lyrics 13 years ago
Sounds to me like a mental health issue being described in the lyrics. Irrational thoughts have taken over and for whatever reason are impossible for this person to ignore. Could be paranoia, anxiety, obsessive compulsive thoughts..."I can let it happen... Just don't think so much, don't think so much"

Sufjan Stevens – Impossible Soul Lyrics 15 years ago
Amazing performance both studio and live versions...if this doesn't make you stop and re-think your life and matters of the heart than check for a pulse. He put on quite the show in Toronto this past October...Third time seeing Sufjan and each time it only gets better

Surfer Blood – Floating Vibes Lyrics 15 years ago
you are probably half right--first verse I see spread of Christianity and the 2nd coming of Christ, then a connection to a female leaving...last stanza...fame and fortune vs the reality of music world...indie bands have obviously devoted and loyal fans, but make little money compared to the Justin Beiber's out there...sad but true

The National – Afraid of Everyone Lyrics 15 years ago
I see specifically a father trying to protect his family from all the perceived "dangers" associated with our modern world. The "orange umbrella" reminds me of the insurance company (Travellers?) and how this person is trying to defend their family from perceived dangers. I also see this song as a metaphor for America..."with my kid on my shoulders, I try not to hurt anybody out loud" How to accept the inevitable changes in America, yet perhaps still clinging to old values.

Beach House – Norway Lyrics 16 years ago
The song is about.....Norway- like Canada...both countries that care for their people. Democracies with a socialistic heart. Countries that are not perfect, but the world would be a better place if certain larger, richer greedier countries would follow their lead.

David Bazan – Lost My Shape Lyrics 16 years ago
Sure this is about Bazan and his struggles with organized religion and personal convictions. Nicely juxtaposed images--- from a burning forest fire to a child throwing a tantrum, suggests to me he isn't quite sure what to believe anymore.

"You used to feel like the prodigal returning
But now,
Now you hate what you've made
And you want to watch it burn"

However, he does seem adamant he no longer believes in the spiritual values he was raised with and would like nothing better than to "watch them burn".

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart – Young Adult Friction Lyrics 16 years ago
Song should be re-titled- "Young Adult Friction". Sounds like 2 young people in need of physical comfort for very different reasons, knowing nothing more will likely develop between them, "if you go your own way, I will go my own way
and well never speak of it again".

The National – The Geese of Beverly Road Lyrics 16 years ago
...the nostalgic sentimentality of watching the pure innocence of youth setting off car alarms on a warm summer night in Brooklyn. Oh who wouldn't want to recapture those feelings and emotions once held as a teenager? And I know that "We're the heirs to a glimmering world" is a stolen lyric, but it's a brilliant way of capturing the exuberance of youth and what the future could hold...Toronto at the end of May...can't wait...

Band of Horses – Is There a Ghost Lyrics 18 years ago
Who hasn't felt that there's a ghost in their house? Very melodic song...I've actually seen ghosts in my house. Right after my mother passed away, I was asleep and felt a tug on my shoulder. I thought my wife was trying to wake me up, but when I finally came to, my mother, who we had just buried earlier that day, was standing beside my bed. I was not dreaming, I was awake at this point. She appeared as if in the flesh. I told her she had to leave (I thought this---no words left my lips), she had to go on. She simply dissolved from body to bones to vapour in a split second. I'm not kidding. I've had some other weird stuff happen that has totally convinced me that here are ghosts in our houses. There is more to this life than we can ever imagine.

Camera Obscura – I Don't Want to See You Lyrics 18 years ago
NHS- refers to the National Health Service used by those living in the UK. It's basically a free public health system similar to Canada or France. (unlike the US which has NO FREE HEALTH CARE for its citizens...so rich, yet so poor!!!)

Camera Obscura – The False Contender Lyrics 18 years ago
She should be over this guy but is having difficulty letting go (even though he was most likely a jerk).

Also, I think it should be "under the copper beech" (a tree) not the sandy one (beach).

Matchbox Twenty – Last Beautiful Girl Lyrics 18 years ago
When I hear this song, I think of a utopian relationship that turned completely sour. Everything just fell apart and one person was holding onto to it by a thread. And then they realize, they no longer have anything to hold onto but a memory. Ultimately, they walk away.

Sufjan Stevens – Casimir Pulaski Day Lyrics 19 years ago
As an aside...this song be about a female, males don't wear blouses. Cardinals (or birds in general) hitting a window are omens of death and obviously refer to his friend dying.
I guess Sufjan struggles withm the same questions we all do concerning God and faith. Why are our prayers seemingly ignored? Why do good people get diseases like cancer etc. and die far too young? I know religion (at least mine) suggests these are the mysteries of faith and not necessarily for human understanding or comprehension. I guess we will find the answers soon enough.

The Decemberists – The Perfect Crime #2 Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm listening to this song as I write this just to see if my first posting was too harsh...NOPE...this song is still crap, but not because it doesn't sound like their other "stuff". It simply is a weak cut. I don't know where you guys are coming off comparing this to anything the Talking Heads did. Have you actually ever listened to the Talking Heads? Trust me it sounds more like really bad disco from the 70's...believe me I was there!

Camera Obscura – Country Mile Lyrics 19 years ago
A hauntingly beautiful song...I'm guessing it's about being on the road, touring and missing your lover. I love the line about "who's being pessimistic now" and not believing in true love. (Denial at it's best). The strings add a further sense of lonelieness and atmosphere. I could listen to this all day long.

The Decemberists – The Perfect Crime #2 Lyrics 19 years ago
I think you mean the Elizabethan language.
This song...umm...it stinks. I can't get past the first 20 seconds without hitting the next track. It sounds like bad disco and is by far the most disappointing Decemberists song on this album. Some excellent cuts, some pretty mundane ones on this CD. Not as good as Picaresque, Castaways and Cutouts, and Her Majesty. But, still looking forward to their toronto show in Nov.

David Bazan – Selling Advertising Lyrics 19 years ago
David Bazan is definitely talking directly to Pitchfork and I believe Ryan Schrieber( a reviewer) specifically.
Another shot at the pervasive corporate world that seems to control the entertainment world. Saw him last June in Toronto and he was simply amazing. Just him alone with his acoustic guitar.

The Decemberists – Sixteen Military Wives Lyrics 20 years ago
Hey Dick-Tionary,

Firstly, my screen name is taken from a hip hop/ rap character portrayed in an episode of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and not from Homer's Odyssey. (PS- you might want to get your spelling straight and brush up on your Greek mythology while your at it). Secondly, what makes you think I give a rat's ass about your American politics? Why would you assume I'm American? Finally, if you can't see the anti-imperalistic implications in these lyrics, you must be as blind as Oedipus.

The Decemberists – Sixteen Military Wives Lyrics 20 years ago
Obviousyl a dig at American foreign policy and George Bush. I can't believe the so called World Power voted in such a buffoon as a president. He's painful to watch on tv and does he(or the hillbillies who voted him in) really believe the crap he says. I think we're watching the fall of the Roman Empire all over again. Move over US, I think I hear China limbering up on the sidelines. Oh yeah, A GREAT SONG, TOO!

i aggree with ladyswitch. it is a dog-eat-dog world and people will use others just for the sake of benefitting themselves. not all people can be trusted and often they fool others with their shimmering exterior as a 'good person' and then hit a really low point of betraying you. happens everyday. this is an amazing song and brody dalles is so talented and gifted. it might not be some peoples type of music but her unique voice make her distinctive and a respected artist...

4 Non Blondes – What's Up? Lyrics 20 years ago
i think this song is obviously about a person who has reached a point in their life when they aren't at their best moment. the world is spinning around them with everyone else changing while they seem to be stuck in this rut they can't get out of. i think it might be depression becuase they just can't seem to understand why everythings changing around them and their not happy. and the only way to be happly with herself is to find the answer by going outside and screaming until she realizes what is going with her life.

See Spot Run – Weightless Lyrics 20 years ago
I aggree with concrete girl. Indeed it is a great love song. I interpreted it like so: a guy falls for a girl, naturally. However this girl, who ends up becoming the object of his affection is different from the previous girls he has dated who porbably get bored after a while, leave him after lust and move on to the next big thing. Aside from the other girls, she has so much more substance to offer him and her good intentions are deeply influencing, thus changing him for the better. He gets really involved with this girl and starts to care about her. She makes him weightless because she cares for him so much and makes him feel good about himself. The love between these 2 indivuals is very empowering and beautiful and lastly weightless...

Bran Van 3000 – Everywhere Lyrics 20 years ago
wow this is such a good song, im kinda surprised there is no comments about it. too me i think this is about a person in love and no matter where they go or who there with, the thought of their lover keeps haunting them. they can't seem to get this person off their mind. everything seems to relate back to this person ultimately in the end. even when this person is not around, this person can still feel the other one because the two of them are so close they have become one. they have such a strong connection that all thoughts lead back to eachother. the way they sing about everywhere...it really shows that this person is deeply in love and bonded with this other person, that they are so involved with eachother. the world completely just revolves around the two of them...for everythings seems to circulate around and relate back to the love they share one way or the other.

Grease – Hopelessly Devoted To You Lyrics 20 years ago
indeed this song is a classic! and the lyrics are so simple yet true. rejection is a very real thing in todays world and it happens all the time. its not just guys who get rejected. also girls. basically if you have seen the movie and just read the lyrics of the song you can easily interpret that this song is about a girl who is falling for this certain guy. however this guy won't even give her the time of day and doesn't pay attention to her. as heartbreaking as it is she can't seem to let go of him...no matter how distant he is towards her. she has such strong feelings for this guy that ultimately she is hopelessly devoted to him and can't seem to help still sitting on by waiting for him to come after her after hes done chasing after other pretty, perfect and snobby girls, unlike sandy. sandy who he will one day come to love...//

Barenaked Ladies – Too Little Too Late Lyrics 20 years ago
i think it's a song based on person who has mainly attracted to someone else. This other person obviously doesn't feel the same way and thinks they have no chance of being in a relationship...in that way. so this person who is trying to make things work out is and force fate upon them is saying that the pure idea of them together would result in greatnes and perfection. he/she wants to prove to the toher person that it would great---if they just gave in. however the twist in this song is doubting their fate. do they too little to base their level of relationship on or is it too late for them. has timing taken on a toll on a chance for them to embrace eachother into theirm lives.

wow...this has to come down to one of the most stupidest most downright pathetically funny songs of all time! this song is just an absolute joke...its just something good to laugh at once in a while...and i have to aggree w/meanguy300...milli vanilli probably didn't recognize the phony and lame lyrics of their "deep" song o...boo hoo. blame it on the rain...i say blame it on the sky...or even better...blame it on mtv for their technical difficulties that caused your tragic secret to come out into the public in the 1980s/90s...enough said

Bruce Springsteen – Hungry Heart Lyrics 20 years ago
This is a great song...may have a selfish undertone like good ol mc pointed out...but it's definetly telling it like it is. in reality adults do get scared or even bored and walk out on their family. it happens all the time. and everyone in this world wants to experience the wonderful world of "love" and everyone wants security and a beautiful home to live in! bruce is just telling the truth and i admire his raw edge thoughts and lyrics. truly an amazing song and indeed a huge ass hit in the 80s. it was in the wedding singer soundtrack too!*

The Decemberists – Of Angels and Angles Lyrics 20 years ago
I don't see suicide in this song at all. Perhaps the gradual passing of the petty details that make up a day, a year, a life. The drowning part, going down together could mean the loss of one's self in a relationship. "There's a hand to lay on your open palm today" evokes the vulnerability we all possess especially when we surrender our hearts to another. (Or we simply need each other) Anyways a beautiful song to end Picareasque on.

Barenaked Ladies – Enid Lyrics 20 years ago
It kind of seems like this song is about a love/hate relationship two teenagers shared back in the day. The lead singer questions about how the two never respected eachother or he never believed she was a person too. Hes looking back, finally realizing how immature and insensitive they acted towards eachother and perhaps how the two were both inexperienced, immature and not ready to handle this sort of realtionship.

Counting Crows – Mr. Jones Lyrics 20 years ago
This is by far the best song ever done by the counting crows and probably the most well known. I think this song means something to everyone, however in general this song seems to deeply define the misconceptions of being famous. Mr. Jones also covers the emotion of being lonely and feeling like a nobody, wanting to make it big. Im pretty certain that this song was written when Adam Duritz was just an average person trying to make it in the music industry back in his San Francisco Bay days at Bars and the song is based on a real night experience he had with a good friend Marty Jones from a former band of theirs. Basically they went to go see Marty's father a flamenco singer play, and then after they went to a bar called the New Amerstam. They were trying to muster up the nerve to talk to these two girls but were too shy and figured if they were famous they would have no problems of this kind with females. Later on, Adam wrote this song based on that night. It's just a great song full of angst, desire and wanting to be a "somebody" accepted in our shallow society. Truly great song ...
