This song is about "selling your soul to the devil." Basically, "Mr. Self Destruct" is a spirit, speaking to the main character of the album, and he's mocking him, bragging about how he gave the character everything he wanted, And turn it all around on him, and make his life a living hell, The irony of course, being that the main character asked for it (and you let me do this to you). At the end of the album, the character concludes that the only way he can escape is to kill himself, And in "hurt" you see him lamenting ever giving himself to Mr. Self Destruct. "If I could start again, a million miles away, I would keep myself, I would find away." |

oh and for whatever reason to me this song always felt like it had some kind of suicidal overtone, not in the lyrics but just in the way the song feels. I mean, when you hear it you an just picture someone in the shower, their head against the wall slowly mouthing the words "everything will be all right" as the camera pans down and you see that all the water in the bottom of the shower is crimson...or maybe i'm just weird like that |

the first time i heard this song i immediately thought it was a gloomy depressing song but then people told me that it was supposed to be optimistic and such but after reading the lyrics myself i'd have to say this is definitely a downer, just coming out of a relationship with a bitter messy end this song speaks to me a lot |

you know i have noticed a very strange pattern about blink 182, green day, and punk rock in general and the fans who love them. i used to like music like this until i started learning to play guitar myself and then i became aware that as musicians blink 182 are absolute dog shit. that doesn't mean that their songs aren't catchy because a great deal of them are, but come on people blink 182 only have about 5 different songs, they just rehash them in many different ways to make new songs. and yes i agree with the other guy, they do indeed suck ass at this song when they do it live. i think they could solve their problems the way sum 41 did: just detune their guitars so their singers would actually be on key when they sing...just a friendly suggestion though |
