I'm sort of suprised this hasn't come up yet since everyone and his best friend seems to be way into vampires lately but in order to kill a vampire you have to destroy the body. Usually vampire myths include staking, decapitation or burning to get rid of a vampire. So being a vampire in a forestfire would be a very very bad thing. Which complicates the song. It seems that to these people burning everything that makes them them (their art, their homes, their past) is a way to escape; but, since they are also vampires, it is implicit that in doing this they destroy themselves. Which I think is pretty accurate. YOu can't really destroy your past and hope to still exist as yourself. Family, past, pain are a bitch but it is all a part of who you are and being alive. "Life is great. without it you'd be dead." |

At first I thought it was an antiwar song. Especially the taking back the throne part (two terms, anyone?), but after comparing it with the original lyrics I'm not so sure. The original lyrics make it seem much more metaphorical, and the soldier references in it are definitely not literal. I guess their intentions for this version could be completely different, but I'm not sure. Either way its awesome. Btw, they are playing at my high school this friday. I swear it. I go to Richard Parry's old high school, Canterbury, and I guess he convinced the band to join him in a high reunion concert. I am going insane with excitement!! |

I know this may souind wierd, but when I hear this song I feel that it's not really there. It's like i'm imagining it or something. I feel like I've fallen asleep while the cd was still playing and I've just dreamed up the song. |

I think this song is also about Anne Frank. MAybe it is about Peter mssing Anne (I heard that he survived the war).
"Made for his lover who's floating and choking with her hands across her face "
He's thinking about Anne who is now floating. Her eyes aren't moving now and she's just lying there as her spirit climbs.
Also the part: "they'll be placing fingers through the notches in your spine". I don't really know what that means but for some reason it just makes me think of humiliation, the humiliation of the holocaust.
I feel that the song is maybe Peter trying to understand everything that happened to Anne. |

Since Jack has said he likes to write stories about random characters, I'm going to say that this song is about a guy whose significant other (wife , girlfriend) is pregnant (expecting). She is, like many hormonal pregnant women, sending him on a thousand arrands just because she can. (she's expecting and therefore he's expected) |

The song also makes alusion to bragging rights. "We'll get clean together and I'll find me a soapbox where I can shout it". (A soapbox is another word for a speaker's podium). So basically he wants to do her and then tell the world....i love Jack White. |

i never knew AC/DC is slang for bisexual. I guess I don't get out much. Oh, Nick Drake, I never knew that there was a rivalry between Edison and Tesla, which drove Tesla to insanity. Thank you for that. |

i love this song. my interpretation of it is a little wierd though. TO me, the girl is a celebrity who has either gone insane (Francis Farmer style) or is in rehabilition and everybody wants a piece of her. She is treated badly by the press, who want to know her story/plans. The narrator in my view, could be someone she knows, or just a fan who is watching here situation on TV and is pissed off by how she's being exploited by the media. |

Okay this is a really good song. Just reading the lyrics off this page may make it seam pretty unoriginal, but trust me and just listen to it because it is great music. NOt every song has to be philisophical. Its easy to relate to and the music is great.
And whole listens to Tool anyways? |

I agree with the Clockwork Orange angle. First of all, his name is Alex. He's reffered to as our "older brother" and in the book they call each other brother and sister all the time. Alex sets out on his great adventure. It could be told by the point of view of his droogs because they feel that Alex is cutting himself out of their lives "he tore our images out of his pictures". Also, someone mentioned that "now we're gonna make him drink it" sounds like revenge. In the book his droogs act their revenge out on him when he gets out of rehabilitaion. |
