Black Lab – Keep Myself Awake Lyrics 15 years ago
The way that I read this song, it's sung by a guy whose girl has either died from a sleeping pill overdose and he dreams about her every night. The dream itself is bittersweet (It's always cold/It's always day) but in it he gets to see her again and she says that she'll be fine as long as she stays awake with him (You always say,"I'll be alright, I'll be okay, if I can keep myself awake."

The rest of the song talks about how much he loves to see her again (But when I'm sleeping I'm so deep in it [love], so much more real to me, closer than reality) but the dream and waking up from it without her there is so painful that he never wants to have it again and instead tries to keep himself awake.

It's probably a bit of a strech, but that's the way I thought about it when I first heard it.

Foo Fighters – The Pretender Lyrics 18 years ago
I definately think this is about the president and politics in general.

Keep you in the dark you know they all pretend
Keep you in the dark and so it all began

Talks about how everyone in politics hides the truth and pretends to be something else.

Send in your skeletons
Sing as their bones come marching in, again
The need you buried deep
The secrets that you keep are at the ready
Are you ready?

That speaks to the "skeletons in the closet" or secrets about themselves which they have to hide, but they know the secrets could and do come out at any time.

I'm finished making sense
Done bleeding ignorance at your defense
Spinning and fill it deeper
The wheel is spinning me
It's never-ending, never-ending
Same old story

Talks about the war and how it's time to stop, whether it makes sense or not there's too much blood being shed as the "wheel" keeps turning every day.

What if I say you're not like the others?
What if I say you're not just another one in your place?
You're the pretender
What if I say I will never surrender?

He's talking about how this particular person isn't just another president, he's "the pretender" or in this context the biggest liar, the one with the most skeletons and the one who does the most harm. But when he says "I will never surrender" he means that no matter how bad the president is, he'll never give up his country or ideals.

I'm the voice inside your head
You refuse to hear
I'm the face that you have to face
Mirrored in your stare
I'm what's left
I'm what's right
I'm the enemy
I'm the hand that took you down
Bring you to your knees

This is pretty straight forward about how it's the people he has to answer to, and the people are more powerful than he knows.

So who are you?
Yeah who are you?

Basically just a "We're the people that this country is made of, who the fuck are you?" to that.

Anyway, that's how I interpret it.

Bush – Out of This World Lyrics 20 years ago
Personally I think this song is about what happens when a loved one dies. The first verse is how you assure yourself that they've moved on to a better place.

In the chorus, I don't think that "should we try to get along" means should these two people try to get along with one another, but rather should we try to move on, should we try to press forward in our lives without them.

"We change by the speed of the choices that we make" just means that you'll never move on unless you make the choice to. And the only thing holding you back from moving on with your life is yourself (the barriers are all self-made, that's so retrograde).

Of course it's just my opinion, but that's what I think when I hear the song...that it's about trying to move on in your life without a loved one that just died.
