I like how you guys are actually talking about the meaning behind this song and not complaining about some insignificant thing that everyone does. NEWAYS ON TO MY THOUGHTS. I think this song covers some of the same topics as The Unforgiven. It's somewhat about society locking us in our cage to be like everyone else i.e. make us mentally well. The thing about no locked doors or bared windows is interesting. That probably means that it is like a sanitarium where they dont lock us in and we can leave, but ppl are too afraid that they will stand out and look stupid. Sry if you think im over-analyzing the song. Good song though, i listen to a radio station in Indianapolis that has something called "Mandatory Metallica" where they play three songs by Metallica every night. They've been doing it for YEARS and the play their older stuff more than they play their newer stuff. Big plus. |

I KNOW HE DOESNT DO IT IN THIS SONG b4 you go off, but i always wondered y he had bible references in a few of his songs, im not saying its a bad thing, i think it really adds another level. I was just wundering. And i DO think that this song is about being famous and hiding who you are to face the world and the crowd. Some1 said that and it totally fits. |

i read through the first few pages and got firg'n annoyed!! I didnt come here to hear people b**** about how horrible they think the cover is. I DONT FRIG'N CARE. I like APC bc of their deep lyrics and chilling, thought provoking views, and you guys cant see past one cover? MAYBE A FEW QUESTIONS WOULD PROVOKE SOMEONE TO TELL ME THE MEANING BHIND THIS SONG? First, is Maynard an atheist? is this why he chose to cover this song? WHat are his views on the whole world and not just the Bush Admin.? This song seems to go deeper than juts a cover song to take up space on an album. |

Hey scark, i think your right about the rapture thing. That makes a LOT more sense than my fourth of july thingy(i didnt really have an opion but still). Good job looking all that up though. Im still confused on why an atheist is getting religous though. Again, just a thought... |

Djdude i think u might be on to something. I bet that does have somethine to do with it. BUT here is my opinion about what the song is about, i also said this on the origional Lake of Fire by the Meatpuppets. It seems like christiaity seen through the eyes of a child, you know, like a judgmental world through the eyes of innocence. When he asks "Where to bad folks go when they die?" that seems like a question a little kid would ask their parents. The whole bit about going to a lake of fire seems like a censored version of hell that the parents are explaining to the kid. All the stuff about death just seems to add to it. just a thought... |

I agree with the bridge thing in the sense that it was kind of a hang out for him. I dont know if he slept there or not, so im going to keep my mouth shut, but the first line does seem to reflect that. The tarp has sprung a leak, like his only form of security has broken, the animals ive trapped have all become my pets, yeah thats the fans/media, i totally agree with that. The living off of drippings and grass, he's living off of the bare minimum, like bumming off of his friends or something. It's ok to eat fish, cause they dont have ne feelings, this one, i think i dont know, has two meanings, like that double-meaning thing someone said, one tha fans, they dont have feelings, you can sell them crap. Two, he lives off of his friends but its ok cause they dont have feelings. I think this song is riddled with double meanings that i havent caught bc it does seem to be about two eras in his life, plz dont hate me if u disagree. |

and to add to my theory, instead of saying they go to hell, the "parents" of the kid says they go to a lake of fire, then they turn into fireworks or something... just a thought. |

It sounds kinda like what a child would say about the world of christinanity(however you spell it) like cobra said. I think this was an excellent tool in writing the song. They showed a very judgmental world through the eyes of innocence. That's probably why the chorus starts out with "Where to bad folks go when they die?" It sounds like a question that a kid would ask their parents. And instead of saying "sinners" or the like, they use "bad folk" just the kind of almost improper english that a little kid would use. |

I heard that this song is about jon getting over heroin. It shows when he says something like "Another place to hide, escape the pain inside..." He's talking about doing heroin |
