ChillyKitten, don't be so naive. not *everything* inent this site revolves around drugs, but a big part of RENT sure as hell does and it's clear in this song. i'm sure she could've lit her candle some other way and she went to Roger's because she wanted an excuse to talk to him/get in his pants, but HELLO, half of the song revolves around her finding her stash/being a junkie, him calling her out on it etc Drugs are mentioned a lot of times throughout the play, they even have a character who's a dealer. Mimi is a heroine addict, she almost dies from it in the end. did you even watch the musical? |

i think it's definitely about his girlfriend finding out, but it wasn't so metaphorically because the guy actually died so she must feel the most awful person out of all this. maybe that's the way he felt about it and then the accident happened... it's just too sad. |

my take is this song is about being able to see through the (good and bad) illusions in life and finding the real purpose and happiness of each moment (and person).
first it talks about people who just want to free load on you and are not your real friends, they're just in for the whatever ammenities/commodities you can provide (a free ride, status, money, one-night-stands, drugs, you name it). to be happy, you have to be able to recognize these people and stay away from them, celebrating your real friends.
the second verse talks about how if you're able to see past these illusions ("recognize the ghost) and stay afloat, don't overdose, then you'll have found real happiness and joy and the people who do that will linger on forever, because they're not shallow or fake materialistic phonies. |

this is probably my favorite flaming lips song... i relate it to Arthur and Fenny on "So long, and thanks for all the fish", even tho it's my least favorite book of the HHGG trilogy exactly because of all the Fenny deal and the lack of action (not to mention he belongs with Trillian), but the song is so good it actually makes me appreciate the book more and their affection and of course, making love in the sky all night long. wouldnt that be nice... i know im totally off here, but this song has almost become one with my brain and i love it. |
