Dexys Midnight Runners – Come On Eileen Lyrics 20 years ago
An ex-boyfriend of mine in high school cheated on me with a girl named Eileen and I hated this song for a while because of that. Luckily that passed fairly quickly and so it remains one of my favorite songs of all time. I have to sing and dance to it whenever I hear it, even if it is in public. Usually it involves a kickline. And the words of the second verse are definitely words to live by. I might be 24, but I am still far too young and clever!

A-Ha – Take On Me Lyrics 20 years ago
This could be my favorite song ever. 'It's no better to be safe than sorry' What better words to live by? It's also funny how this song kept coming up during various parts of my childhood, usually sometime during a move I would hear it on the radio. So for me personally, it has come to represent a little piece of consistency during transition.

The Notwist – Off the Rails Lyrics 20 years ago
It doesn't seem trite to me at all. It makes me think of lying in the grass drinking cheap whiskey and watching the trains pass, wondering where they came from and where they are going. Wishing we could just jump in an empty boxcar and go, not knowing where we will end up.

Mates of State – Ha Ha Lyrics 20 years ago
This song makes me want to shake it, if you will. It's funny how when I sent it to a friend of mine in the air force and he thought where they said 'telegram' they were saying 'Taliban' Oh, those silly military kids! And yes, the video is one of my favorite videos ever. A friend of mine told me it was based on a French film, but he couldn't tell me which one it was. You can check this out as well as other Mates of State videos on their website. Unlike Launch, it's ad-free!

The Notwist – One Step Inside Doesn't Mean You Understand Lyrics 20 years ago
I think it's about being an individual in the world. Society is generally not very accepting of individuals, and tries to label and stereotype people who are different from the norm. But the so-called normal people are freaks for going along with conformity for conformity's sake alone. I actually don't see this as a sad song at all, but rather as an anthem for the outcasts of the world and everyone who dances to the beat of a different drummer. Lovely!

The Shins – Kissing the Lipless Lyrics 20 years ago
I see this a little bit differently than everyone else.

I think the chick was with a boyfriend and she wasn't being satisfied emotionally or sexually, so she turned to her friend Shins guy, and that resulted in an affair. (called to see if your back was still aligned and the sheets were growing grass all on the corners of your bed) He knows she is still unsatisfied with the old boyfriend and he is calling her on it.

She ended up falling in love with Shins guy, but broke things off because she felt guilty about cheating on her boyfriend and felt an obligation to him. (but you've got too much to wear on your sleeves, it has too much to do with me) This implies guilt, and Shins guy being a reason for her feeling guilty.

She is telling Shins guy she is still in love with her old boyfriend and that things have improved with him, but Shins guy knows she is lying and is with the old boyfriend for the wrong reasons. (you say you're still in love, if it's true what can be done/remember your ailing heart and your criminal eyes)

The whole situation leaves Shins guy torn between trying to get her back and just throwing away everything, even their initial friendship. (secretly I want to bury in the yard the grey remains of a friendship scarred/it's hard to leave all these moments behind)
But she just continues to put on a tough front, and stays with the boyfriend, while acting like Shins guy never mattered too much. (you tested your metal of doe's skin and petals while kissing the lipless who bleed all the sweetness away)
