This was written after Simon had oral surgery; he was put under an anesthetic called "medazalam" (I think I spelled that right). From what I understand, medazalam makes you all dreamlike, still conscious but very fuzzy, and feeling no pain. The lyrics came from that experience. |

Simon wrote these lyrics to/for/about John when John left the band. It is pretty self-explanatory if you know that. Losing a friend, someone you depended on for so long, and now, you don't even recognize them any more. And then they drift away, leave you... |

Yeah, that's what I meant, kinda. On first impression, I got the tragic childhood vibe, but as I learned the lyrics, thought about it, I changed my mind. I like your take, "How Simon felt during the Pop Trash years", very nice. |

I read that director Russel Mulcahy wanted to make a film based on the book. Duran was going to do the music (or at least the title song). The movie fell through, so Russel decided to do the video with them... |

I love everyone's thought! I saw an interview where Simon said the lyrics were inspired by a conversation he had with a little boy shortly after 9/11. And the boy said "Nobody knows what'll happen tomorrow," or something similar. So it's very optimistic, cuz no matter how bad things might seem, you've just got to believe it'll all turn out all right... |

On VH1 Storytellers, Simon said this song was inspired by a news story he'd read about a "15 year old schoolboy who built a nuclear reactor in his garden shed" |

Well, my first thought was something about a child who had been abused, had a horrible childhood, etc, and is finally getting out. I don't know, seems too simplistic, especially for Simon lyrics. So I'm not sure, something about betrayal... If it had been an older song, I would have maybe thought it was inspired by the way the band fell apart, members leaving, etc, and how he felt abandoned, but determined to go on ("Now, I know this shattered feeling / Trampled but still breathing") |

No, I see what you mean. And the chopstick line, while the butt of many jokes... Think about it. I just imagine this poking, "messed-up" feeling in my mind, kinda all stirred up and bothered... And just generally feeling out-of-place, feeling wrong: with life, with myself. Feeling frustrated with my place in the world ("I'm making a break for the shadows / On the cinema wall / They should be mine but I'm not that tall") OK, maybe I'm too serious about this, too, lol. |

Canada, I read the same thing (about Simon writing this to John regarding his addictions). Some lines really bring it home to me, like the second and (especially) last verses. Heard the same thing about Vertigo, btw. |
