I don't know, maybe I'm totally off here, but it seems like this song could have just a touch of sarcasm in it. Either way it makes a good song to sing while in your car alone. |

I think it's about the speaker being like "piss off, i know you want to tell me what to do and say and think and feel and how to act, but piss off. i'm better than you" |

first... we should obviously define the word catalyst:
* * * *
Catalyst - (katl-ist) - (I'm excluding the chemistry related definition as it does not apply to this song) # One that precipitates a process or event, especially without being involved in or changed by the consequences: “A free press... has remained... a vital catalyst to an informed and responsible electorate” (Robert O'Neal).
Now in light of that, I think that the song is about the singer getting involved with some one who brings her down with him as he takes a drinking/drugging binge. He is unaffected for the most part (him being the catalyst) while she's changed forever.
The second verse has the same idea only this time it's her that is bringing some one down and acting as the catalyst.
That's my interpretation. |

Could we not be at each other's throats over a meaning of a song? What it means to you is what it means to you. The beauty of a song like this is that it CAN be looked at from different points of you. Except how beautiful the song is, find what it means to you, and don't be angry when some one else doesn't agree, regardless of their religious affiliation. If jdb thinks it's about God, what is so wrong with that? Just because he has that sort of opinion doesn't mean that he's trying to force it down your throat. He's just offering up another possible interpretation of the song. He didn't tell you that you had to agree. I just don't see the big deal in expressing different opinions on a site that's meant for expressing opinions on songs. Besides, the box where you've all typed your responses does say "What does this song mean to you?" does it not? So I think that one person's opinion shouldn't be taken so seriously. It is about what it means to you regardless of what it means to some one else. If it relates to you somehow on your walk of life than it's a succesful song.
So could we just be less hostile? It's really pointless. |
