Built to Spill – You Were Right Lyrics 17 years ago
funny - i always thought it was just another witty dark song.
thanks for the background.
now the song is even cooler knowing it is a collage of other songs made into a new meaning.

Built to Spill – Else Lyrics 17 years ago
sounds a lot like an experience with addiction.
the last bit "just this side of love, Is where you'll find the confidence not to continue"
is getting clean.
this could be with drugs or another person - or anything you are trying to change really

Red Hot Chili Peppers – I Could Die for You Lyrics 18 years ago
Sounds to me like everyone is right - more or less.
To me this sounds a lot like sharing your story at a 12 step meeting - in countless ways.
I could die for you - there is a common phrase "one addict dies so another does not have to"
this is what i give to you because i get it free - this is another common phrase "give back what was so freely given"
oh this life i choose - this is what the whole thing is about - having a choice.
see what my eyes have seen - we share our experience with each other in hopes that we can learn from one another.

who knows what they meant.
i like how all the things that everyone said this is about are all things we have in 12 step meetings.
love, friendship, faith...

Blind Melon – Soup Lyrics 19 years ago
I am totally on board with the drugs. BM has been and always will be about the struggle to step up to life - to take responsibility and to make something of it. At first that is all I got from it. Then I got a habit and heard a lot more. I don't know that shannon ever caught a habit but he definately shot dope (axl rose is god). Plus "shooting dope" is often used to refer to drug use overall - captures the false hope and degredation.
bitter beans = dope.
willing to do anything for this thing that seems like it could make everything alright even if just for a minute - but i know it is so not worth it.

Soup and Nico are totally about the struggle with drugs, which is not all that different from struggles people have without drugs. - the struggle to live

Foo Fighters – Come Back Lyrics 19 years ago
i say it is about dope.
the chase - getting one.
come back - from active addiction.
dead on the inside... give me something to lose - self explanatory
changes - that is what recovery is all about.

cool how lots of folks can see such different things.
maybe a good sign of true art.

Blind Melon – No Bidness Lyrics 20 years ago
this was on the video that was sold after shannon died - proceeds to go to his daughter. I wish they would have kept on with this song. especially because it was introduced as a "brand new version of no rain" and just from the few lines it seems it certainly is getting at the same point but in a different way - the idea of not being accepted or wanted. that you should go back to where you came from. I would have loved to hear that flush out that idea.

Blind Melon – Mouthful Of Cavities Lyrics 20 years ago
Let's get something straight. An addict is an addict. there is no such thing as a heriod addict or a coke addict or a food addict or a sex addict. There is just addict. Different addicts tend to prefer differ drugs or ways of getting off but most will use whatever you put in front of us. At some point, many of us believe that if we avoid the specific drug that got us into trouble we will OK not realizing it is a lie.
SO, just because he died from a coke OD does not mean he was not also herion, or that he was using my herion. My experience, there are some differences between folks who like uppers and folks who like downers. Shannon's music certainly did not seem like the result of a coke or meth bindge.
The thing that amazes me about so many of the songs is the way they describe addiction and trying to get clean and depression and trying to get well.
That is one of the things that breaks my heart about his death. he really seemed to want to be well, in his lyrics at least. I wish he could have found his way home to recovery from active addiction.
