I don't believe this song is about Alex's mother... lyrics such as "We'd drink and we'd dance" and "The smell of sweet perfume will stick to me forever, baby" just don't seem to fit that context! And would you call your mother "baby"?! Like others, I believe this song is about his love who is dying. All the lyrics just seem to support it. E.g. "To touch you again, with life in your hands" and "And I'd listen close to your every word, as if its your last, I know its your last". Maybe the bit "You were always invincible in my eyes" suggests how he thought that nothing (namely death) would happen to her? Whatever the meaning, it's a beautiful, beautiful song and one of my Calling favourites. |
