The Who – Armenia City in the Sky Lyrics 20 years ago
This song was written by one of Pete's friends for the group. Thought I should mention it.

Anyhow, it is pretty psychedelic.

The Who – Pinball Wizard Lyrics 20 years ago
Toomuchmagicbus - I've seen the movie many, many times. If you read the inserts in the album, it says that this song was put in mostly as an afterthought to buy over an important reviewer who was obsessed with pinball.

The Who – Behind Blue Eyes Lyrics 20 years ago
Pete might be bi, but as has been said - he has a wife, I very strongly doubt that he's gay or that his sexuality holds any relevance in this song.

I like the theory about white people, but I'm not sure that that's really it.

At the angrier part I think it's all about keeping yourself in check - not being unrealistically optomistic, not getting overly angry, not being cold [in either sense of the word, I suppose]. In a way it's admitting that you need help [which is what he's asking for in the song].

A lot of his songs weren't written about himself - and I suppose it's been said that this relates to the Lifehouse Villain [which is probably right], but I think it applies to people in general as well.

The Who – Substitute Lyrics 20 years ago
I think it's a bit more than The Who being a substitute for the Rolling Stones, but that is definitely part of it.

Mostly, I think it's about false appearances.

The Who – Pinball Wizard Lyrics 21 years ago
Kafziel, from my understanding Tommy wasn't really deaf, dumb, and blind - he could see but didn't really understand what he was seeing, and he could hear - it just didn't make much if any sense to him. By dumb, I believe he meant mute. I could be wrong, but how would Tommy be staring in mirrors if he were really blind? He's simply blind to reality, and all he seems to see is his reflection.

Also, as far as I know, the actual pinball part to Tommy really isn't important to the true meaning and plot.

The Who – My Generation Lyrics 21 years ago
Yeah, I heard that the stutter was due to Roger not being able to read it clearly the first time, thus, stuttering, and they thought it sounded cool.

However, I've also heard that it was representing the mod culture which they were so much a part of at the time. Everyone but Roger was popping pills at the time to get through shows. Odd that Roger is the one with the stutter then, but he had to act the part of the mod even if he wasn't one. :P

The Who – I Don't Even Know Myself Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is on Who's Next.

It is a good song, I agree - probably one of my favorite from that album.

Simply, I think this is about someone who is frustrated and confused about himself, although other people act like what he thinks, feels, and is is very obvious. Much like many of Townshend's songs, you could say - the lyrics seem to have such an obvious meaning, but that obvious meaning isn't usually the true one.

The Who – Cry If You Want Lyrics 21 years ago
I really like this song, the lyrics especially..

I think everyone has felt the ways described at some point.

"Don't you get embarrassed?" "Don't you get ashamed?"

The lyrics seem fairly straight forward, but they're good nonetheless.

The Who – Christmas Lyrics 21 years ago
And yet if you listen to Amazing Journey, it's all okay to Tommy since he's in his musical world.

Heh.

I think this points out something that is a question one would start to wonder though... how can he be saved?

Some could say Townshend is making fun of Christianity and religion in general (it seems obvious throughout the movie), though I don't see that so much in this song.. my friend is convinced he's questioning God's power to save people - but I don't really see it that way.

The Rolling Stones – Ruby Tuesday Lyrics 21 years ago
I could be wrong, but I've felt that 'Ruby Tuesday' was like her name for Tuesday.. I'm not sure if that makes sense...

See, he says he can't hang a name on her, because she changes with every new day - and on that particular day, Tuesday, she seemed like a Ruby (though, she'll probably seem to fit a different name the next day and the day after, etc)

It's also about freedom, I think, and going after what you believe in, even if that means your life isn't going to be the same day after day (as some people want it to be)

Gorgeous song.

The Who – I Can't Explain Lyrics 21 years ago
I was under the impression that this song wasn't simply about not being able to express your love for someone, but also not being able to express yourself. (and of course, other things too :P)

Townshend: "There is little to say about how I wrote this. It came out of the top of my head when I was 18 and a half. It seems to be about the frustrations of a young person who is so incoherent and uneducated that he can't state his case to the bourgeois intellectual blah blah blah. Or, of course, it might be about drugs."

The Who – Amazing Journey Lyrics 21 years ago
I agree, I love this song.. one of my favorites. It's even better in the movie, or so I think.. almost seems magical.

It almost makes me wish life were simple, you know... just music.
