This song is an opera and simply tells a story of a young man who killed another. He can't figure out why and how he had done it and wishes it was a dream. He cries to his mother and tells her not to worry about him because he believes all hope is lost and he is a doomed soul.
"Any way the wind blows," and "it doesn't really matter" are popular themes in the song and this shows the man's hopelessness and he dosen't care because he is doomed nomatter what he does. He can't find forgiveness or atonation.
The part with the various voices is obviosly the court case that he must go through.
The last part of the song is when he is being executed (by stoning) and he begins to justify what he did for himself and all sympathy for his victim or himself leaves. The ending portrays his thoughts in his dying moments alone in the whisping wind |

It may not be their best song, but this is the most symbolic song that zeppelin ever wrote and can be interpreted in more ways than any other. The fact that the band itself dosent even know what it is about tells you that. (either that or they just want to see us suffer..... fuckin britts...) So, since this site is about finding meanings to songs and not about honoring further the greatest rock band in history, stairway should have more posts than any other

for everyone who has been saying that LOTR is an allegory or symbolic an any way your are wronggggg. There have been a hundered interviews of Tolkien and in each of them he says that the books had absolutly no symbolic meaning and was not intended as an allegory although he got the idea of hobbit holes and people living in the ground from trench warfare in ww ONE not 2 ONE. |

i dont understand how you could play the song backwards and have it talk about satan i think its bullshit. Its like people saying that hit me baby one more time is please fuck me im not to young backwards. it just dosent make sense how the song can be perfectly sensible when played regularyly and sensible backwards as well. you would have to be pretty damm awsome to write a song like that and since zepplin was fuckin stoned out of their skulls wen they wrote it i severly doubt the rumors. i havent heard it backwards but i juss dont believe it.

i havent hardcore analyzed the song but going through it a few times i get out of it that the piper represents death like the phrase "pay the piper" this comes from greek mythology when people would put pennies or coins on your eyes when you die to pay the ferryman to take you across the river of sticks into the afterlife, hence "buying the stairway to heaven" |

Years Ago, Steven, and The Awakening are all closely related and this one deals with possesion because the intro music is from "The Exorcist" It also deals with the lost innocence hence "all my toys are broken and so am I inside" and "The canival is closed" The line "Im a little boy, no im a great big man" represents the memory of his son steven possesing him. He is distraught at the death of his son who "only lived a minute of his life." Im not sure but I think the persona of the song is Steven Sr and he and his son are similar because the both lived a minute of their lives. (Steven Sr living just a minute of his innocence) He blames his wife for his nearly stillborn sun and, possesed by the infant's memory, he kills his wife (shown in the awakening)
These are just my thoughts and if anyone knows for a fact what this song is about please tell me. If kkhx ever looks at this forum again can you elaborate on the whole babysitter thing?? |
