Billy Idol – White Wedding Lyrics 16 years ago
Everyone who was saying that it's about not agreeing with his sister getting married hit the nail on the head.

"White Wedding" just placed on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the '80s and Billy was on there talking about how big a kick he got out of people misinterpreting his song. He was very adament that it was an anti-marriage song, that it was speaking out against getting married for convenience. He didn't mention a sister, but that fits. He also laughed about Eddie van Halen using the song in his wedding when that was like the anti-message but was just like "Whatever, do what you want."

You might be able to find the video of the interview on VH1 somewhere. And yeah, cataractbabe, even knowing what the song is about, I'm still really tempted to use it at my wedding, too. =D

The Pogues – Sally MacLennane Lyrics 18 years ago
I'll go through it verse by verse:

[verse one and two]
Jimmy is a kid (young man, whatever) in a fairly small town. He entertains in pubs and is well liked by everyone, but grows tired of small town life and the pub and decides to leave for bigger and better things.

[first chorus]
His friends go with him to the train station to see him off. They talked about old times but didn't let themselves get too down about Jimmy leaving because they feel sure they'll meet again some day.

[verse three and four]
One of Jimmy's friends, the singer, grows older and lingers at the pubs more for the drinks than for the company, though he does still make small talk with other patrons. He hears talk of Jimmy, and how he's off and doing well for himself. As the years go on, some of the old "gang" die.

[second chorus]
It's more symbolic, now. They aren't taking people to an actual station, now. It's a funeral. They talk about all the times they had with the people who have died, but aren't too sad, because they know they'll meet again some day.

[verse five]
Jimmy finally comes back home, everything has changed. Everyone he knows has died. Now depressed, he drinks himself to death.

[third chorus]
Like the second chorus, the third one is more symbolic and is about a funeral or something similar. And, once again, everyone talks about all the times they had with Jimmy, but they aren't too sad, because they know they'll meet again some day.

It's kind of a sad song (what am I saying? It IS a sad song in subject, anyway), but it's very upbeat. It's like Jimmy's friends and the funeral goers. What's happened is sad, but they won't let it get them down, because there's always a bright side.

Bright Eyes – Landlocked Blues Lyrics 19 years ago
I've been listening to this song a lot lately, mostly because it's been on in my boyfriend's car several times recently.

And I'll go ahead and admit that I absolutely hated it. I didn't really like the female vocals, and the male vocals made me want to stab myself.

But then I listened to the older version, "One Foot in Front of the Other." I liked it a lot better, and I'm not even sure why. But after listening to the other version, it was easier to listen to this one. I still like the first version more, but this one is really growing on me.

As for the song's actual content...this song quite possible makes me hurt more than any song I've ever heard before. The lines in the first verse "First tell me which road you will take / I don't want to risk our paths crossing again / So you walk that way, I'll walk this way" almost make me cry every time I hear them, along with a few others.

Despite the pain I feel whenever I listen to this song, I can't stop listening, because, at the same time, it's just so beautiful.

The Goo Goo Dolls – Iris Lyrics 19 years ago
Whenever I hear this song, I can picture someone who doesn't have a lot of time left wanting to spend their last moments with that special person (mostly because of the "I just don't want to miss you tonight" line).

Beautiful song. It sort of reminds me of my ex, too, because he sang it for me once. He had a terrible singing voice...haha. Anyway, the song usually makes me cry when I listen to it just because of the raw emotion behind it...

Franz Ferdinand – Van Tango Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm not all that fond of "Van Tango" really... Don't get me wrong, it's a good song. I just don't think it's on the same level as some of their other songs.

As a side note, parts of "Van Tango" are very Beatles-ish to me. Did anyone else get that feeling?

Papa Roach – Last Resort Lyrics 19 years ago
I think that the song, overall, is a bit too dramatic, especially when it gets to: "It all started when I lost my mother." That's just a little too after-school special/Lifetime movie for me.

But the chorus, especially the lines: "Wish somebody would tell me I'm fine / Nothing's all right, nothing is fine" really gets to me. I can remember feeling that way when I was younger, just really wishing that someone could honestly tell me that everything was going to be okay, because it definitely didn't feel like it would.

Gorillaz – Feel Good Inc. Lyrics 19 years ago
I pretty much agree with what's already been said about the meaning of this song. It's about how hedonism and all these material things are supposed to make you feel good, but in the end, they don't, and what really makes you feel good are the simple things in life, illustrated by the turning of the windmill and Noodle's little solo.

The only real input I have is my take on the repeated phrase "Feel good." It sounds like a mantra, like someone just saying it over and over again trying to convince himself that he really does feel good, even though he doesn't. He's surrounded by all these things that he at least thought made him happy before, and he doesn't understand why they don't now, so he's just saying "Feel good, feel good" over and over in the hope that it really will make him feel good about it all.

Franz Ferdinand – Do You Want To Lyrics 19 years ago
Well, to the person who said that the lyrics are typed wrong, I'm sorry. It IS "I blew him before you." I'm looking at the pull-out right now. And it very obviously says "blew."

cymbaline, don't jump all over people for not researching songs. We research them as best as we can. It's not like we can just call up the guys and ask them what they meant by this line and that line.

And finally, just because a guy is married or dating a girl doesn't mean he's straight. Newsflash: bisexual means attracted to either one, so there are going to be some bisexual guys who date guys and some bisexual guys who date girls. And in an interview in The Mind's Construction Quarterly, Kapranos implied that he is, in fact, bisexual by answering the question "Boys or girls?" by saying "Either."

I'm not trying to go and say the band is gay. But I do think that Kapranos is bisexual and this does come out in the songs from time to time.

Finally, about the song, I think it's just about going to a party or a club looking for a bit of action. And I do think it has some (at least) bisexual implications. Not the best FF song ever, but it's fun and catchy, so I like it.

Hilary Duff – My Generation (The Who cover) Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah, changing it to "I hope I DON'T die before I get old" is just stupid. The original line wasn't talking about going out and killing yourself before you get old or something. It was talking about hoping that you could always live your life how you wanted to, to its fullest, and hoping that something would happen and you would die before you were too old to do that anymore. It's something that practically everyone wants. They want to enjoy life, not be just some other old guy in a nursing home who can't do anything anymore.

Depeche Mode – Personal Jesus Lyrics 19 years ago
In my opinion, I think that someone's "own personal Jesus" is someone who's there to listen to what they have to say, who will listen to their hopes and fears, their prayers and confessions.

For the song itself, I agree with the people who say it's about televangelists. It's about the people who encourage you to call them and spill your guts to them and find Christ and such (for a small fee, of course). The people that call them end up feeling all nice and saved and such and feel like they have someone to talk to now, when the whole thing is actually false because the people you call don't really care.

So I think it's being sung from a televangelist's point of view, saying to pick up the phone and call them, telling you to confess to them because they're "someone to hear your prayers, someone who cares." If you call them, they'll listen to you and forgive you and help you find faith; just "pick up the receiver, [they'll] make you a believer."

Garbage – Androgyny Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree with Renholder and a little with everyone else.

With the whole "boys in the girls' room, girls in the men's room" bit, I immediately thought it had to do with transsexuality. Maybe about seeing a TG person in a public restroom and being unsure of their gender and whether they belong there or not. Public restrooms are a pretty awkward place, since you don't want to go in one and it's illegal to go in the other. I've been stopped more than once on my way in by people saying "Hey, that's the women's room!" and I have to just sigh and say, "I know." And I'm sure that most of the women in there must be thinking "...What's a boy doing in here? Is he lost? ...Is that a girl?"

I also think the song is making a statement about disregarding gender. Like "Who cares if it's a boy in the girls' room or a girl in the men's room? It doesn't matter. Be androgynous and look past all of that." I think it's talking about not making any decisions about a person because of their gender, because that isn't who they are. Maybe you're a straight guy or a straight girl (or at least you see yourself that way), but you never know when that one different guy or girl could come along and change everything for you.

In short, I think it's saying to just forget about gender. Gender isn't who a person is, so that shouldn't affect how you see them or stop you from loving them.

R.E.M. – Losing My Religion Lyrics 19 years ago
I think imetthisgirl nailed this one.

Everyone saying that the phrase "losing my religion" has something to do with giving up your faith? I'm sorry, you're wrong. I'm not saying you're stupid or anything, though, because it's highly likely you've never heard the phrase used before. It's used pretty much in the southern U.S., and, as a few people have already stated, all it means is losing your temper. -Why- it means that, I don't know. Perhaps because when you just really fly off the handle, you generally yell and scream and cuss, etc., which would be against most religions. Hence "losing one's religion."

Anyway, I think what he's saying in the song is that he's trying to make this relationship work, but the girl (or maybe guy, since only gender-neutral pronouns are used) isn't willing to work as hard for it. At least to me, "I think I thought I saw you try" implies that the singer wants to -believe- that the other person has made an effort to make things work, but there's no way to be sure.

Maybe (s)he is just a little too much for the singer to handle, always going, and the singer just can't keep up, and he's losing his temper trying to. ("Losing my religion trying to keep up with you, and I don't know if I can do it.")

In short, I think this song is about giving your all in a relationship, but not getting anything back.

Michael Jackson – Thriller Lyrics 20 years ago
"by KungfuRooster on 06-16-2005 @ 06:10:14 AM
Michael Jackson is a freak and should be killed. Molesting boys is terrible and the only reason he isn't in jail is because he is a rich wanker. All his music is over produced and crappy so is this song."

Okay, look here. Maybe he did molest the kids, though I really think he didn't. I personally think that he himself is too childlike to have done it. I think that it was pretty much a bunch of kids (him included, when I say "kids") having a sleepover. Perfectly innocent.

That aside, who made you the judge of all songs? You go through saying that three of the best MJ songs are about molesting children (even when they're obviously not; "Beat It" obviously has something to do with gang violence), and then you say that a song about shoplifting is "probally [sic] the best song wirtten [sic] ever and...the deepest one." What the hell? Well, I'm of the opinion that the song was stupid and pointless, and the singers' voices were grating. What do you say to that? Ha.

I'm done acting like a child, now.

I love this song. It's not deep and meaningful or anything like that. I just love the song. It's catchy and I'd give anything to learn the dance. Haha.

Anthony Rapp – Goodbye Lyrics 20 years ago
I love this song. There's a problem with the lyrics, though. The first verse should go:

"Sometimes I've been afraid to say the words / Sometimes I've been willing to lie / Sometimes I've been ready to tell you what you want to hear and / Sometimes I've been willing to lie / Sometimes you've been so afraid to see what I really need / What I really need"

Gorillaz – Kids With Guns Lyrics 20 years ago
I don't hear "Is she real," either. I'm sure I'm hearing a "p" sound. And even if they are saying "Is she real," the girl committing suicide thing doesn't really fit in with the rest of the song.

The first thing that popped into my head when I heard this song was "school shootings." They're kids with guns more or less taking over the school, and I think that the expression a person participating in a shooting had could be described as skeletal, maybe. They may be turning us into monsters in two ways: one, that nobody trusts anybody or has compassion for anyone anymore, or, two, that when in a situation like that, some people wouldn't be able sacrificing others in an attempt to live. And that's monsterous to me. "Easy does it" could be addressing the person doing the shooing or the people that are always afraid and non-trusting. I dunno.

I can easily see most of the other views, too. Especially how Bush is pretty much just a kid with a gun. Because, IMHO, the entire war can be seen as a child throwing a temper tantrum...

Thank you, =Filth=. Someone else giving the whole double meaning idea a chance.

That's one thing I like about this song. There are so many plays on words and such. Most of the song is a play on German wedding vows, and the whole hast/hasst thing adds a very nice effect to the whole song, in my opinion.

On an unrelated note, I just listened to the English version again... Once again, if you haven't heard it, be glad. If anyone wants it, I'll send the file to you, if you'd like, but I don't think you want it.

I've never really hear Prince singing it--I've only heard Warren Zevon's cover of it. But I liked it.

And as for the 2's and U's, Irishfury, Cool Dandy probably typed it that was because that was probably the way it was done on the lyrics that came with the CD. I know that's how they were written in the lyrics that came with the Purple Rain CD/soundtrack.

Simon and Garfunkel – Scarborough Fair/Canticle Lyrics 20 years ago
Actually, it's not a homage to Dylan. Those words aren't even originally Dylan's, exactly. The line is from Scarborough Fair, a rather old folk song. In fact, the only lyrics of this song (actually titled "Scarborough Fair/Canticle") that actually belong to them are the ones in parentheses, the "canticle" part. The rest is just the folk song.

As polkadot said, here is a very nice page with some insight to the meaning of the "Scarborough Fair" part of the song. http://www.geocities.com/paris/villa/3895/

This song wasn't a tribute; just another anti-war/war protest song. And a very pretty one, at that.

Franz Ferdinand – Michael Lyrics 21 years ago
He could be bisexual, gay, or even straight. Someone's sexuality really has nothing to do with a song's content.

I mean, Elton John did assorted songs that talked about being in love with a girl (like "Susie" in "Crocodile Rock"), but he's gay. And in an anime (okay, not a real person, but the only example I could think of), one of the main characters, a singer named Koji, sings various songs that make references of being in love (or at least attracted to) girls, but he's in a very serious relationship with another guy.

So, it's not like sexuality really affects anything. I mean, I play-flirt with some of my friends (usually Kate and Mariah) and make sexual references (hey, I'm in high school. What do you expect?) but it doesn't make me straight. And another of my friends (this one male) and I play-flirt with each other just to get reactions out of our other friends. And he's not gay or even bisexual. So, yeah. It's not like it's that big of a factor in things.

And as for the people out there saying that it could have been written from a girl's point of view, the line "This is what I am, I am a man, so come and dance with me, Michael" kind of blows that theory out of the water.

On a completely unrelated note, I have that line on a t-shirt. Just felt like sharing.

Bob Dylan – Hurricane Lyrics 21 years ago
First off, I'd like to say that I love this song. The violins make it sound so haunting. And someone asked awhile back how his name is supposed to be spelt. It's Rubin.

I did a paper over Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, and naturally had to do a good deal of research over it. I'm not completely sure if he's innocent or not, anymore. There was evidence both ways. But it's fairly obvious that he didn't recieve a fair trial at all.

For example, even the two men, Bello and Bradley, actually did lie. Quite a lot, actually. They frequently changed their stories, and their stories didn't always match each others. For example, where Bello said he saw three people driving in a white car, Bradley claimed to have seen four. Bradley said that he had seen the car on Lafayette Street, but Bello said that he saw it on Sixteenth. During his cross-examination, Bello admitted lying to the police, admitted taking $62 dollars from the cash register, and kept changing his description of the suspects. In a New York Times article, Bello and Bradley both claimed to have been bribed by detectives to identify Rubin Carter and John Artis as the Lafayette Gunmen. It's possible they were lying about that, but it's still supsicious, isn't it?

Still, guilty or not, this song, which proclaims his innocence, is wonderful.

Bob Dylan – All Along the Watchtower Lyrics 21 years ago
Also, I've heard both Dylan's and Hendrix's versions. Both are great, so it all just depends on your taste. I'm generally a more "screaming guitars" type of person, so I usually listen to Hendrix's version, but sometimes I'm in more of a mellow mood and would rather hear Dylan's. Like I said, it all depends on what you prefer. :)

Also, I've heard another cover done by U2 (it was on "Rattle and Hum"). It was different and, while still good, didn't hold a candle to the original or Hendrix's cover. Then again, it's pretty hard to compete with Dylan and Hendrix, isn't it? :)

Bob Dylan – All Along the Watchtower Lyrics 21 years ago
Someone told me once that it was about the Berlin Wall, but that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

The theories that the song has multiple Biblical references make the most sense, but it's always possible that it meant something entirely different to Dylan. Who knows? Whatever the secret is, he'll certainly take it to the grave. :)

Franz Ferdinand – 40 Ft. Lyrics 21 years ago
I've got a couple of friends from Scotland. I'd always assumed that they used metric system and I always went through the trouble to try and convert distances and things to metric whenever I'd talk to them. Finally one of them just told me that they didn't use metric all that much and he didn't really follow it, anyway. I felt a little stupid, afterward. *laughs*

It really does sound kind of like suicide, or contemplating it, at least in the first verse. The second verse just kind of confuses me. It's still a good song, though. And almost annoyingly catchy. ^^

Franz Ferdinand – Michael Lyrics 21 years ago
Okay, so this song is basically about a gay one night stand or something of the sort. Big deal. It's not like you'll "turn gay" because you listened to it or anything. That's just stupid.

Then again...I just listened to it, and OH MY GOD! I have no desire for breasts anymore! Oh god, I'm gay! A song turned me gay! The impossible as happened! A homoerotic song has somehow changed my chromosomes! Oh god, how will I ever live!? *sobs*

Pfft. Yeah. Sure. That's basically how some of you people are coming across. Stupid, isn't it?

"Michael" was the first Franz Ferdinand song I ever heard and is still one of my favorites. I heard "Take Me Out" not long after and then bought the cd. And I'd have to say that "Michael" is still one of my favorites. So what if it's about a gay experience? It's -just a song-.

Rammstein – Zwitter (English) Lyrics 21 years ago
I always thought that this song was more or less about a hermaphrodite that is in love with him/herself. I still think that.

And humma, Rammstein is just like all bands. Some people like them, some people don't. You obviously don't like them, but my friend Ela, a German exchange student, does. It just sort of depends on your tastes.

Also, I've noticed that if you know the translations of Rammstein's songs and still like them, you have to be pretty open minded. Incest (like with "Spiel mit mir" and "Tier"), pedophilia ("Halleluja"), cannibalism ("Mein teil", I think), drug use/overdosing ("Adios"), etc. They're certainly an interesting group and I, personally, enjoy them very much.

Rammstein – Du Hast (English) Lyrics 21 years ago
Okay, am I the ONLY person here who knows that there actually is an English version of "Du hast"? It was sung in English, and those are the lyrics to it. It's not supposed to be a translation.

If you haven't heard it, don't worry; you aren't missing anything. It sucked pretty hard.

And with the whole argument between the whole "have" and "hate" thing, at least in German, I personally think it's supposed to be a little of both. Because until Till says "du hast mich gefragt", it could have been translated (by listening only, of course, since the official lyrics say "Du hast" instead of "Du haßt") as "you, you hate, you hate me." It gives the song a bit of a double meaning.

Rammstein – Spiel Mit Mir (English) Lyrics 21 years ago
I personally don't think it's about molestation (since molestation is generally thought of as unwanted sexual contact and the brother singing is obviously more than willing), though it's definitely about incest.

And KattHikarioftheTurks? I don't know about what your German teacher said. I'm not fluent in German at all, but I still know that "liebe" is "love", and for "Brüderlein" to mean "gay lover", it would have to have "liebe" in there somewhere...

I heard this song after hearing Rammstein's cover of it. Personally, I prefer this version. I really like this song because, not only is it a damn good song, I've read the book multiple times and just enjoy all the references.

And King probably is a Ramones fan. Not only did he commission them for the song, he even makes multiple references to their song, "Blitzkrieg Bop", in his book "The Shining." As Jack Torrance is starting to lose his sanity, he frequently thinks "What is it The Ramones say? 'Hey ho, let's go.'"

David Bowie – Diamond Dogs Lyrics 21 years ago
I had been listening to and enjoying this song for quite some time without really noticing any significance of the words--until recently reading someone else's take on the similarities between the lyrics of "Diamond Dogs" and Samuel R. Delany's novel, "Dhalgren."

(In other words, I've read these references elsewhere and are not mine, except for the possibility of the "Halloween Jack" part referencing two characters instead of one. That one's my own speculation.)

The first similarity would be the "ten inch stump" line at the beginning of the song. At the beginning of the book, the main character ("Kid") sleeps with a woman he has just met. Shortly after, she turns into a tree.

"Dressed like a priest you was" could be a reference to Reverand Amy Taylor, who, while she isn't a priest, dresses in Catholic priest robes.

"Halloween Jack", who "lives on top of Manhattan Chase", could reference Tak Loufer, a man that lives on top of a highrise, much like Manhattan Chase. One could arguably say that it only references Tak, since Tak and Jack are rhyming names, but it's also possible that it references both Tak and a man Tak attempts to get into his bed, Jack.

There are probably many more references scattered throughout the novel, but I'm only about a hundred pages into it so far.
