Basically what BRUINSrock said- end of a relationship. What it appears is that the couple are together when there is nothing left to be united over... "It wasn't worth fighting for." The narrator has apparently moved on "There's a pretty girl somewhere/with a pretty name" but won't admit this to his significant other "But I can never let you know how much this means." |

The meaning I get from this song, is about being in a relationship with someone who made you a better person. This relationship appears to be deteriorating and the person doesn't want to return to what they were before ("If you want me- hold me back"). Although they don't want to return, they find it is the only cure to ease their pain. ("Frail, the skin is dry and pale, the pain will never fail And so we go back to the remedy"). Be it drugs, alcohol, or whatever it was in their past that their ex couldn't stand and helped them recover from-- which appears to be with much exasperation ("And tell yourself, 'You'll be the death of me'"). Also, it seems like their ex wants to remain friends and help them cope with their problems, but it's too painful for the person speaking ("I don't need a friend, I need to mend so far away"). These are just my opinions and what I get from the lyrics, anyway. |
