Well, she's obviously talking about the myth of the nymph Daphne, who turned herself into a tree rather than surrender her virginity to Apollo. But there's more to this song than just an old story. I think in the second part she's contemplating the myth from a modern perspective. She's acknowledging the tragedy of the great sacrifices we make in order to preserve our "purity" (for the singer this probably has less to do with actual virginity than a general sense of truth or righteousness). And in the end she praises those who have suffered because they refused to give up on what was "pure". She reveres them, wearing their virtues proudly like a "leaf crown". |

| Wow. This song is really something else. I've heard these guys compared to Coldplay, U2, and Radiohead before...but I feel like Clark's vocals are just plain better. There are very few singers who can actually send chills down my spine, but he's one of them. His ethereal voice just soars, and I love his falsetto. Not only does he have a beautiful voice, but he can convey so much emotion in his songs...something most other artists I hear these days fail to do. They write some pretty good lyrics too! This is one of those songs that can make you ache on the inside when you listen to it. Amazing. | |

| It's about whatever you want it to be about! That's what makes this so great. Honestly, I keep reading all these great interpretations, and I have to say that you're all right in your own way. Even if none of these are the real meaning that Immi wrote for the song, you're right if it means anything at all to you and that's what is really important. Actually I think the fact that this song can mean so many different things to so many different people makes it better than if it were clear and simple to figure out. That's what makes music so wonderful. And Imogen if known for her unique lyrical style-not just her unique musical style. I respect her so much for that. | Well phlurt, if you buy into the masturbation thing, then I guess there are a few explanations. The tip of a man's penis is often called the head, or it could be a reference to his throwing his head back while masturbating. Keeping your head down might also convey guiilt or shame involved with the process. There are probably even more ways to take that, but that's all I have for now. It really just depends on your interpretation of the song. I think it's about the obsession some people have with movie stars ad how dangerous this behavior can become. To me the chorus seems almost suicidal, like he is staring down the barrel of a gun he is pointing at himself. But it coulde be about masturbation, and the second verse does seem like a wet dream of sexual fantasy... | |

oras_ukir, you're thinking of gary allen. He did a cover of this song after his wife committed suicide, but vertical horizon originally wrote this in 1999. Although I definitely se where the lyrcs fit someoe who misses a person very close to them who died. To me it's about someone who was in a realtionship and their partner left them. It's about coping with the loss of someone you feel can never have an equal in your life. It's funny how sometimes everything good in your life seems to revolve around that one special person... The most moving line in the song for me is in the final chorus, "I don't want you back" To me, that's true love. Even though it's ripping a hole in his heart, he knows that she could never be happy with him, and so he is willing to let her go. He doesn't want her back if she won't be happy. |

It's from an interview with Imogen and she was responding to a question about the meaning behind Hide and Seek: "In a broad strokes way, it’s about losing something very dear to me and how much of an impact that person had on my life and about maybe how when something awful happens to somebody else, how other people react to it. It tied in with when I went to see Michael Moore’s Farenheit 911 and I remembered that image of George Bush being told and him completeley carrying on as if nothing had happened. And I just thought that was outrageous, if I was the president I would run out of their and fucking get onto the TV and say something amazing, and he wasn’t even reading his book and he had it upside down. And I was really horrified at how selfish and awful he was, and how emotionless he was and that kind of reminded me a little bit about somebody else behind this song." |

I can definitely see how this song is about her sister dying. It's kind of about her coping. "Playground school bell rings, again Rainclouds come to play, again. Has no one told you she's not breathing?" -This seems like Amy is at school just going through the motions because she is so traumatized. The word "again" after both phrases seems to help convey the monotony of it all for her. She is void of any feeling. And she sees "rainclouds" come to play which can have a few meanings. I thik it stands for the depression that settles in when she walks outside and her sister isn't there. But the rainclouds might also be her classmates. It's like her friends are all out on the playground playing, but they only make her more depressed because they are happy without her. And she wonders: has no one told oyu? my sister is dead! How can you be so happy and not care at all!?!? Hello, I'm your mind giving you someone to talk to...hello... -She feels so distant from everyone and everything happy in her life that all she has are her thoughts to keep her company "If I smile and don't believe. Soon I know I'll wake from this dream." -She puts on a mask to hide it. She is suppressing her pain and putting on a facade to fool others. She is in denial and is waiting to "wake up" and see her sister again. "Don't try to fix me, I'm not broken" -This seems to convey to me that someone (probably her parents or the school) is trying to put her through therapy, but she doesn't want anything to do with it. Hello, I'm the lie, living for you so you can hide...don't cry... -Once again, the facade or mask idea. She is living a lie, pretending to be happy so she can hide her pain. Suddenly I know I'm not sleeping. Hello, I'm still here, al that's left of yesterday... -I think this is the point where the realization of it all hits her. She "wakes up" from her dream and realizes that her sister is never coming back. "all tha's left of yesterday" meaning that she is all that remains of their relationship from the past. What a great line. Well, that's what I see in this anyway. Sorry it was so long.... |

A good friend of mine's "life partner" recently died of AIDS. I know that's probably not what this song is actually about, but it fits so well. When he talks about Heaven and Hell, it's almost like he's wondering about their fate. Will they go to Hell for committing the "sin" of homosexuality, or will Heaven accept their love? And he says, no matter what--even if they don't end up anywhere, he will be with his lover forever. And the whole thing about the catholic school kind of works as a symbol for a split with the church over love. I know, I know. It's not the actual meaning behind the song, but every time I hear it I think of the two of them sitting together in the hospital room, especially during the words: The time for sleep is now But it's nothing to cry about 'Cause we'll hold each other soon |
