Project 86 – Wrought On This Holiday's Eve Lyrics 16 years ago
"A TEXT MESSAGE TO THE SO-CALLED EMPEROR"!!!!!! yay, i win! when i first heard this song, i thought it might be about a son finding his dad eating santa's cookies since it's on their Christmas EP, and the son dealing with his disillusionment that santa's not real. i figured that was a stretch and probably not what it was about, but still thought it'd be hilarious if it was.

Emery – Playing With Fire Lyrics 17 years ago
i def. agree w/ the sexual temptation theme. however, my first impression of the song was that the relationship it was depicing was that of an illicit affair.

"I'm not hiding, I'm just buying some time for us to find the back door. We will come out when it's safe for us."

They're hiding their relationship from this lady's husband (or other lover, w/e), and the rest of the song is just that empty, frustrated, guilty feeling that results from something birthed in lust.

The Myriad – We Will Be Dissapointed Together Lyrics 17 years ago
i agree more with KAC89. I think this song is about how we disappoint God and how that puts a wedge between Him and us. It creates all this doubt, but ultimately the author of this song finds almost a twisted comfort in the mutual disappointment of his sins; that God is disappointed in him, but so is the author disappointed in himself. This mutual disappointment creates a common ground for the reconciliation between man and Creator.

The Rocket Summer – Save Lyrics 18 years ago
i think the general theme of the song is loneliness. it's about those "dark nights of the soul," the times in life when you just want to quit. i think kathryn's got a point, citing the blog about bryce being suicidal. i think the song is about those moments when of being darkly & utterly alone and you just want some relief. from some of the verses, it sounds like a relationship w/ a girl failed, and maybe that's what started this bout of loneliness. but i def. sense that this song is a cry for relief from loneliness, and (brace yourselves, i'm about to open a can of worms here) the only relief one can ever find from loneliness is the love of Christ.

i can't help but wonder if maybe this song is a bit tongue-in-cheek. but even so, it is a great song. woo hoo.

also (I'll never, ever look back
Sitting still, sitting still
Arrogant mindset of lusts
They search and strain and drink and stagger
When we are hollow
Sitting still, sitting still
You hate us cause we'll never go away)
is all bits & pieces of project 86 lyrics on previous albums.

i think the all the verses in quotation marks are supposed to be Jesus speaking. if that helps anyone.

Project 86 – Say Goodnight To The Bad Guy Lyrics 18 years ago
my interpretation goes a long more with hatedenemy's. bravo. i sensed the irony in the song that the speaker is not the bad guy, but everyone puts him in that role. the chorus is a surrender, proclaiming that "I'm not the bad guy here, but you're going to paint me as the bad guy anyway. So go ahead, do what you want to me, but i'm innocent. You'll have to answer to it someday." that's what it seems to be saying to me.

Anberlin – Godspeed Lyrics 18 years ago
Christian told alternativeaddiction.com, "Godspeed is almost a reflection of rock 'n' roll history. It's almost my bitterness coming out towards former musicians that kind of gave in to their self centeredness, who bought in to the whole sex drugs and rock 'n' roll."

Anberlin – A Whisper and a Clamor Lyrics 18 years ago
the first impression i got from this song was that he's saying he's tired of people coming to their shows & clapping their hands, but not really understanding what the band is saying with their music. but first impressions are often wrong.

Showbread – Dinosaur Bones Lyrics 18 years ago
wow, it's funny to read everybody's opinion on what this song is about & how different it is from mine. when i heard this song, i heard a lot about women. "this thing was made from one of my ribs" references to Genesis where God forms Eve from one of Adam's ribs. i thought this song was about how men should take care of women instead of dominating them, & how society tries to change women ("they stick tacky ornaments on it..."). but i can also see that it's talking about showbread as a band.

Showbread – Welcome To Plainfield Tobe Hooper Lyrics 18 years ago
i don't really think this song has as much to do w/ TX chainsaw massacre as everybody thinks. i believe it has more to do w/ the depravity of the human heart. maybe the reference to TX Chainsaw Massacre in the title is just reinforcing that theme of depravity.

Showbread – A Llama Eats A Giraffe (And Vice Versa) Lyrics 18 years ago
see, i don't believe that Christians find no hope in the world. true, our ultimate hope is in Christ, but Ecclesiastes talks about making the most of our life here. it's not pointless here. and Jesus talked about "storing up treasures in heaven." so it's not like God is playing some joke on us by making us stay on this earth after we're saved. this world has a point. we just don't know what it is.

Showbread – Oh! Emetophobia! Lyrics 18 years ago
First of all, I would like to say that I wholeheartedly agree w/ Jon Foreman. I'm not a huge SF fan, but I think everything he said was true, especially that Jesus didn't die for songs. And I don't think all Christian bands have to have EVERY SINGLE SONG be about Jesus & they have to use His name for it to be a "Christian" song. Personally, I think that's bull. Woot for bands who just write good songs, no matter their content!

However, when I hear this song, I do hear a lot about God. Josh may or may not have meant it to be that way, and I'm not saying that just because I hear a lot about God in this song means that it IS about God. (My opinion is law, bow to it!!! J/k.) In fact, if Josh said that he wrote this song about a girl, then he wrote it about a girl. But, regardless, I hear a worship song (a very original, funky one at that) & I would just like to give my reasons for hearing it that way.

Showbread uses a lot of metaphors on their Age of Reptiles album. One of those metaphors, I believe, is throwing up. I think this is a metaphor to sin. The Bible talks about His Word being like food to us, it nourishes our souls, but when we sin it's kind of like we vomit that food right back up. Emetophobia is "fear of throwing up." Since I think this song is a love song, but one to God (again, my opinion), a result of a radical love for God is a fear of sinning.

Also, lines like "smear makeup on my face, run your fingers through my hair" and "you give new meaning to drop dead gorgeous" are kind of difficult to imagine being sung to Jesus. But I still believe that those lines point to a love for God. What does makeup do? It covers up our imperfections and draws attention to our better features. This could easily be a plea to God to cover up his shame and bring out his better qualities. Also, the Bible talks about how God's glory is so awesomely beautiful that no mortal man can stand before him; it's so beautiful that it kills. His glory "gives new meaning to drop dead gorgeous."

The line "three cheers for the end of twenty-one years" also makes it hard for me to hear a love song to a person. Josh Dies isn't very old, so how could he be with a girl for twenty-one years?

Granted, I'm not demanding that this song is about God or that all of Showbread's songs are about Him. In fact, "Your Owls Are Hooting" is obviously a love song to a person. That's obvious. There are some songs that are clearly directed at another person, yet others aren't quite as clear. This is one of those songs. I think it could go either way. Like I said, if Josh wrote this song for a girl, then he did. But I still hear a song for God.

Showbread – Stabbing Art To Death Lyrics 18 years ago
i would also like to point out the one line josh repeats over and over and over and over: "You inspire me to sing to you." i think the point he's really trying to make there is that so many "worship" songs today are just one line repeated over & over w/ no meaning. we may SAY (or sing in this case) that God inspires us, yet our art lacks that inspiration. i'm tired of worship songs that are unoriginal and uninspired. if we truly seek to worship God in our songs, i believe we should give Him our best, not just a line repeated.

this is another knife stabbed into art.

Relient K – In Like A Lion (Always Winter) Lyrics 20 years ago
in this song, matt thiessen draws a parallel line between the creatures of narnia, and the Christians in this world. they were waiting for their king to come and lift the curse. as Christians, we await the return of Christ. this is such a beautiful song, 'tis my favorite for the moment.

Five Iron Frenzy – Fistful Of Sand Lyrics 20 years ago
this is one of my fave fif songs. like those two up there ^ said, this song is about feeling empty from the world, and even deeper, how the world glamorizes the things that leave us empty. and how we're all afraid to die but not willing to admit it, so we fill ourselves up with things of the world.

Nichole Nordeman – Wide Eyed Lyrics 20 years ago
this song makes a good point, altho 'tis hard to put it into words OTHER than the ones the song did. ya know? but i think what nichole's trying to say is that Jesus was an outcast, so we need to not be so high 'n mighty and educated to those who are a lil nuts. in fact, we need to be a lil nuts ourselves. now, that doesn't mean that we have to get drunk and preach to mail boxes or believe that crystals can save us or nething, just that we need to not be so hauty towards those ppl. they are lost and dead, just as we once were before Christ.

Anberlin – Paperthin Hymn Lyrics 20 years ago
"I thought you said forever Over and Over." I think that part is about how people think they are going to live forever on this earth. yes, if we are saved, we will live forever, but not here. and i think that's what this song focuses on. we should enjoy life here, but all the while know that we have a place in Heaven if we are in Christ. also, that life gets hard ("complaints of violins become my only friends... will day break ever come?") and distressful, but "when life is in discord, praise ye the Lord." love anberlin's new cd, i am currently addicted to it.

yeah, i love the piano too, 'tis so dark and moving... to me, this song is about God and how he sings us to sleep, but yet there are demons in the dark and he needs God's peace to help him sleep.

Brave Saint Saturn – Binary Lyrics 20 years ago
omg, i can't believe there are no posts for this song! this is a great one! well, neways. this song speaks to me a lot, because when i broke up with my boyfriend, i felt like such a weakling. the song reminded me "the bravest thing of all is always hope." and i did hope. and i continue to hope. hope is freedom.
but even deeper, this song is about how when a relationship ends, and you just feel like if you never met that person, never hoped, never held them close, then your world would be better. and sometimes we tend to think that it would've been better if things happened that way, but we mustn't believe such things.

i think this song is about how people who try so hard to NOT comform, and it becomes just as bad as comformity itself. those who TRY to be something, instead of just being. the song pretty much speaks for itself if you ask me.

Five Iron Frenzy – Eulogy Lyrics 21 years ago
yeah, i love this song so much. for the longest time, i used it as a lullaby. there is such an air of finality and things finishing in the song, i thought 'twas a great way to end my day; by falling asleep to it. then one night, i realize a deeper meaning in the bridge: "A resting place for broken ships, a cemetery for the humble, noone's here to make you stumble..." i think that reese is comparing our souls to ships. and when you become saved, 'tis like you're dying. i always liked the idea that i was buried in a "cemetery for the humble." the first step to admitting that you need a savior is humility and becoming humble. and then the most passionate part of the song, when reese sings, "If Jesus Christ is truth, then I am mostly lies. If Jesus Christ is love, then I have failed to try. If Jesus Christ is life, then please, just let me die! LET...THIS...DIE!" i always feel that that phrase is referring to submitting your life to Christ; completely and wholly becoming humble and dying to yourself.
there is probably a duel meaning, since some of the previous posts have claimed that reese stated that this song is about how FIF's fans hold them up on a pedestol. and i can see how that might be a part of the song, but the overall impression that i derive from it is in the bridge and last verse.
