This song definetly shows what syd traded when he began drugs. Syd ended up in some mental institution. Everyone mistakes the "war" as being person to person. The war was with syd himself toward himself. His drug use led to him "trading": the people he cared about for lonliness(heros for ghosts), his general freedom(hot air/ashes for cool out doors and nature), a varying and worth while life traded for a "cool comfort" of the institution. Then the song goes on to ask did you decide to have a quick high with drugs into a downward spiral eventually ending un in an intsitution(cage) where hes subject to absolutly nothing. Rogger then says how he wishes thathe dident choose the life he did by the tittle line of the song "I wish you were here".Brings a tear to my eye. i would also like to point out that i know nothing about anything. |

I think you guys are right about the meaning of the song being about over commercialism. But i think its more geared toward people and their lazieness raising their children. Instead of raising them correctly they spoil their kids rotten to just keep them quiet. They mention how you cant buy laughter for a child and that is an important part of a persons childhood. You can see proof of this if you walk into any single department or toy store. Theres greedy whining kids everywhere you turn. I would also like to point out the fact that im full of crap. |

To me this song doesent have that deep of a meaning. To me it describes a character. The music as well as the lyrics decribe vividly "Mudds" personality. As well as Les' frigan awsome voice witch is that of Mudd's himself. Thats what i think anyway. They create these characters with other songs as well including(but not limited to):obviously Balad of Buckethead, John the Fisherman, Tommy the Cat, and Jerry was a race car driver. All these songs look like a peek into the life of a realy hilairious and interesting character.Somtimes from an 3rd party poersonality though as in Jerry Was a Race Car Driver, And the Balad of Buckethead. Can i get an Amen brother? |
