| Marcy Playground – Sex And Candy Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Most likely it really means what violetzebras said, but the lyrics remind me a lot of the book "Candy" by Luke Davies. The first verse really sounds to me like the thoughts of a heroin addict and, seeing as most of the songs on this album are about drugs, that would make the most sense. | |

I love this song so much. It is positively the most gorgeous thing to listen to with earphones and eyes closed. There are different versions of it, depending on cast of the musical and what country it's performed in...but wichever one I listen to, it never fails to touch me every time. Especially since I'm a die-hard fan of opera, and the Phantom musical itself. Truly one of the most beautiful songs I know. |

"There's a shadow just behind me, Shrouding every step i take, making every promise empty, pointing every finger at me. Waiting like a stalking butler who upon the finger rests." ^^^This part of the verse is talking about problems of his past that haunt him. Something we call, "a skeleton in the closet." He's describing how the regret is taking over his life, and how the bad reputation resulting from the past precedes him, like it's become his identity, like it affects every descision he makes. "Murder now the path called "must we" just before the son has come. Jesus, won't you fucking whistle something but the past and done?" ^^^ This part of the verse is where he's pleading to anyone with power, asking for things not to go further and get worse, hoping that everyone just forgets the things he did in the past. "Why can't we not be sober? I just want to start this over. Why can't we drink forever. I just want to start things over." ^^^ This part is where all the conflict lies. There are so many underlying meanings to it that nobody can pinpoint what it is exactly. "Why can't we not be sober" is a double negative, saying why do we have to be sober. When we're sober, we're aware of the things we do and say--our judgement of right and wrong is far better. In my opinion, he's saying that he wishes everyone could live in a state of being where nobody can remember anything or pay attention to the dark details of someone, or worry about good and evil. "I am just a worthless liar. I am just an imbecile. I will only complicate you. Trust in me and fall as well." ^^^ He's talking about how anyone who wants to get involved with him will end up going through some heavy shit and turning out to be influenced by him. You know, 'Garbage in, garbage out.' "I will find a center in you. I will chew it up and leave, I will work to elevate you just enough to bring you down." ^^^ He's saying that even though it appears as though he's doing better and can lead a normal life, he'll end up disappointing those who rely on him. Trust me. "Mother Mary won't you whisper something but what's past and done." ^^^ Again, he's making a plea to the powers that be, asking that his past just disappear. Trust me. "I want what I want." ^^^ Blatantly obvious. He's again referring to how he wants all the bad stuff to go away...wants life to change and be like oblivion. |

| Björk – Play Dead Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
"Darling, stop confusing me, with your wishful thinking. Hopeful embraces, Don't you understand? I have to go through this..." It says to me that she's telling the person she loves that she doesn't want comfort...that the sadness and suffering is something she needs to go through in order to get over something bad that happened. She "plays dead" as a means to make things less painful--letting the pain pass by instead of resisting it and prolonging it. In a sense, she's saying she deserves it..."I belong here where no-one cares and no-one loves..." And she can control how she feels, but is far too intent on getting over whatever is making her miserable. *Shrug* |
