Just one thing: I find it ironic that some of you can still claim that music isn't political when you see just how many political comments this song has generated. Discussing whether music is political or not is enough to prove that it is (I mean, come on! look how many posts there are here!) However, the fact that Green Day defines itself as anti-Bush is not positive in itself, as they are transforming legitimate opposition into a commercial product, a full package, a glossy piece of reified pop culture. They might say they are against the "system", but who are they signed to? who produces their videos? who distributes them? who buys them? who do they make money for? Scratch the surface a bit and you'll find that they are just as much part of the system as any country singer. But at least the image they give of the USA (to us, the world) is more positive than what we see on FOX or CNN. |

Wow! I thought we'd got over this by now! When you look back to the 80's, you realize how we've regressed since then, where gender play is concerned. I mean, back then bands seemed to revel in adopting an ambivalent attitude towards sexuality: the use of make up by Gothics and New Romantics, the lyrics to many songs (listen to Depeche Mode or Human League for instance), the haircuts (Eurythmics, Adam & The Ants...) Looks like we're back to a more conservative era now.... Or else those of you who feel uncomfortable with "Michael" are just adolescents struggling with a budding sexuality you barely understanf yet.... Anyway, the whole gender confusion thing is delicious and I love this song! BTW, I'm a guy. I'm not gay. But I can find other men attractive. And I have no problem with this. |

I don't see what the problem is with "poo poo". It's simple: something seems superficially beautiful, delicate, perfumed etc (=roses) but it's actually rotten and stinks underneath (=poo poo). "You think your shit don't stink" : you think you're above the rest, that you're super-human, perfect....but everybody's shit stinks... As for the rest, I think you got it right. |

I think this is one of the best (and most oroginal) Bloc Party songs. It keeps surprising me, the way it shifts and transforms itself constantly. Wow! Of course, much of what they do reminds me of the (early) Cure, and when I hear "Nothing ever happens" I can't help but think of the "waiting for something to happen" lyric from "Play for Today". I guess it's also because the voices are rather similar... And "Positive Tension" is just a brilliant title. |
