'this isn't christmas, this is china-town' is a great line. i'm not exactly sure what it means, but i can guess. if any of you have been to chinatown in new york city, where ryan is from, then you'll see all this green, red, and white tinsel and decorations hanging from windows and street lights. it looks like it should be christmas decorations, but it's really decorations from little italy, which is right next door, and often spills into canal st and china town. so if that's what he meant by "this isn't christmas, this is china town", then that's great. it probably isn't what he meant, and i'm sure there's another obscurely hidden reference in there, but either way, its a fantastic lyric. |

*"Despite OUR plans, I've got to draw the line"
another slight lyrics change.
Great song. I figure it's just about loving someone but having to move on, despite not wanting to. |

i think this song is about ryan, who is in a very serious relationship with some girl, who he's been with for awhile, and naturally, lately its been growing a little stale. That's when he meets the new girl, who is cute and innocent and new, and who he really begins to like and want, but can't, because he feels restrained down by his other "love". |

| Ryan Adams – Rock N Roll Lyrics

Well, the whole reason Ryan made the album Rock N Roll was because the executives pressured him to. He wanted to leap right into Love Is Hell, but the studio said it was too sad and depressing, and that he should make something more upbeat. Naturally, Ryan threw together this awesome compilation of songs, many inspired by some of his favourite artists, threw the title of "rock n roll" onto the album as a slap in the face to the studio, saying 'ok, look, i've made rock n' roll, it's still awesome, and now can i please release what i want to release?"
i think the song rock n roll is the one piece of himself on the album, i agree with davidecoyote. very nicely done, short and sweet. |
