Nine Inch Nails – The Warning Lyrics 18 years ago
okay, this might sound really strange. I've read the comments and they sound a lot smarter than what I have to say, but this is just what I have thought of when I have listened to the song so far.

(this is sort of if you were to look at the song to be about something that had happened in the last few years, just like Capital G makes references to George W. Bush )

Some say it was a warning
Some say it was a sign
I was standing right there
When it came down from the sky

When I heard those lines, my mind immediately went to the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 and when 'it' or 'they' came down from the sky.... and some would say 'it was a warning' of worse things to come, and some would say 'it was a sign' of the insanity of our times, and just the tragedy of the entire day.

Again, this is just what struck me when I heard those lines, I'm not saying thats what the song actually means, simply my impression

Crash Test Dummies – Superman's Song Lyrics 19 years ago
I just saw a documentary on Superman, and the part about Christopher Reeve made me think of this song. After he was paralyzed and he still went on couragously, funding research for a cure for paralysis and never showing a sign of giving up, only then did he really become the kind of hero this song talks about. Ironic in a really horrible way.. It shows you how it's not about the powers or the cape at all.. I think there was a biography about Christopher Reeve and it was called 'Super Man' and it's of weird, cause I don't think any other person who's played a superhero ever took on the identity so much in the public's mind.. it's almost like he *was* Superman, and when he died, they were playing this song and other songs with a Superman theme, it was like Superman had *really* just died... Just really sad, in every way.

Joni Mitchell – A Case Of You Lyrics 19 years ago
This song was played throughout my childhood.. whenever I hear it I feel all sad and nostalgic about that time, but now that i'm older it applies to my life now and love I've felt as an adult.. a completely gorgeous song. I'm from Canada and our anthem is 'O Canada,' but it's sung all happy and in a major chord.. I like how she turned those two words around into a wrenchingly sad sound.. kind of like the word 'hallelujah' in the song 'Hallelujah' by Leonard Cohen.
I like this song especially in Practical Magic when Nicole Kidman is driving home.. perfect atmosphere.
I don't think many songs are as beautifully sad as this one.

best...song...ever... just saw Reservoir Dogs a little while ago cause i was a kid when it came out and never saw it. emr8806 - i sometimes do that dance when i hear it too! it has such a creepy-happy feel to it.. but that's prob. cause i can't hear it now without thinking of Mr. Blonde's happy little sociopathic dance.. if you like this song but haven't seen the movie - see it!

Butthole Surfers – Whatever (I Had A Dream) Lyrics 20 years ago
I just love the lines:
'Juliet is up in heaven, a pocket full of pills,
And Jesus drives to Mexico, to get - HER -PRESECRIPTION - FILLED I HAD A DREAM LAST NIGHT'

i put the last part in caps cause that's how i see it - he kind of snarls out the last part and it just knocks me down, every time.

Garbage – #1 Crush Lyrics 20 years ago
^^ i forgot, i was also going to say, the line 'I can never be ignored' says it all. Makes you wonder what would happen if the guy said he didn't want to see her again.. makes you wonder just how fast all that love she has would turn ugly.

Garbage – #1 Crush Lyrics 20 years ago
killer song.. i was so afraid that people commenting wouldn't notice how scary it is.. which is what makes it so great. but everybody got it head on. blood tears, i totally agree, there aren't enough songs about the harsh reality of love, whereas in this, the bubblegum pop-y side is turned right upside-down to reveal just how dark and scary and powerful love can get. get shivers whenever i listen to this...

bocmaxima - me too.. I actually didn't know about this song at all until Last Days.. you're right, beautiful scene. It was almost a video representation of the song.. not a music video, but something more. Definetely a great song under pot etc.. and same with the visualizer, CowboyDanCarson1.. it's on my Realplayer right now.

Edwin – Trippin Lyrics 20 years ago
i saw the music video for this way back in 98 or 99.. and for some reason the song has always stayed with me.. even though i never heard of Edwin again.

i think it's pretty obvious that one of the main meanings of this song is about drugs... 'i'm higher than you know', 'falling down burnin up' etc.. and just the title itself. I've never heard one phrase ('I feel like a star') sum up the feeling of being on drugs so well, though i've never gone anywhere near as far as it describes here.. it also reminds me of the description of being manic in bipolar disorder... basically: You feel like a star. The way he says it is so ironic... it captures the irony of the situation.. because then there's always the comedown, you 'hit the ground' and you're not a star at all, you're just some junkie lying on a street downtown. Same with what I've studied and heard about bipolar disorder... you're flying, everything is beautiful, the world is one shining golden place... and then you crash.

I like how the whole song keeps referencing space.. with 'star', 'meteor', etc. Great song. I wonder what happened to Edwin.. why he never released another album?

The White Stripes – You've Got Her In Your Pocket Lyrics 20 years ago
yeah Scrabble, i agree, i think there is something else in this song too. i didn't really understand this song until in English we were studying 'A Doll's House' by Henrik Ibsen, and the main character Nora is really subtley controlled by her husband.. it just clicked. it also reminds me of videos in health class in high school that showed possesive spouses, who want to keep their girlfriend/boyfriend locked up 'in their pocket'. It has a really sort of sly sinister undertone, because 'home sweet home' isn't really sweet, it has become a prison that the girl is trying to get out of. The part:
And you'll be there if she ever feels blue
And you'll be there when she finds someone new

sounds almost stalkerish to me, because even when she leaves him, he'll still be there. he can't accept that she doesn't want to be with him.

i agree with the other ppl who posted here too, though, because it is sad, just really quietly sad, because the relationship could almost have gone right. i feel myself sympathizing both with the guy and the girl.. because who doesn't want to keep their boy/girlfriend close by sometimes, and fears losing them?
My favourite song on Elephant... should have got more recognition.

rock0r: i think we're talking about the same video. the street and shed that i was mentioning are just painted on the back wall of the room, they're only focused on for a second or two, but for some reason i really noticed them. hope that helps! :)

Alexisonfire – No Transitory Lyrics 20 years ago
i love this song.. the video is especially good. alexisonfire was never something that i listened to until this song. the 'tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow..' gets me every time.
i think that if this song is about depression, then the 'tomorrow etc' shows how, when you're depressed, the rest of your life looks so stale and pointless. it doesn't matter if you waste a day because every day after that will be exactly the same. no colour, just a replay of a replay of a replay..
the video is in black and white, which is perfect. the last 'tomorrow' part, where the camera pans to the pictures that were only in the background before - the empty street, the abandoned shed, and makes it look like you're going towards them, along with the music - makes me shiver every time. they look so dead, kinda creepy.
amazing song.

Alanis Morissette – Joining You Lyrics 20 years ago
I love this, because it's one of the very few non-preachy anti-suicide songs that i've heard. Instead of the stuff that's all been said before, 'you have so much to live for' etc, you feel like it's really coming from her heart. For some reason, i also completely assumed she's talking to someone male - i wonder why it comes off that way so much? also, i wonder if this song was based on someone alanis actually knows/knew.

Shawn Colvin – Sunny Came Home Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is so beautiful, because all the time i heard it on the radio - i never realized that it was more than your average forgettable song. That's because the lyrics are so subtle and soft and you don't realize them until you want to. i think there's already been a lot of good interpretions, but i'll add some stuff that i felt:
i didn't think about it till i saw Shawn Colvin on oprah, too, talking about her depression, and that really clicked with me. out of the whole song, one line stands out to me:
'I'm walking on a wire'
that to me really describes depression, because at certain times, it would seem like the whole world would fall back away and you'd be left on this wire, when everything you thought you knew is turned on its head. Not just depression, but in anyone's life, where suddenly you see everything differently. When i hear this song, i picture myself as Sunny, and i can picture her legs tingling and her heart thumping as she's about to do something that will change her life FOREVER. There's only a few moments like that in anyone's life, and you feel so surreal, like your head's floating and everything's clear - i've never heard a song describe that so well.

The Beatles – I Want You (She's So Heavy) Lyrics 20 years ago
i love this song. does anyone else find it.. sort of creepy in a good way... it gives me shivers when i listen to it. Something about how simple the lyrics are, repeated over and over, over and over. There's the light part: 'i want you', then the harder guitar part 'she's so heavy'. It makes sense it being about obsession. The part that's almost creepy to me is the last part, with no words, just the guitar for minutes and minutes. Somehow they're able to sustain it, and you don't notice at first, but slowly this white noise gets louder and louder until it's louder than the guitar - it reminds me of static on a cassette or video tape - sort of like on 'The Ring'-but they didn't have either of those things when the song was written. The tension is building, and you think it will go on forever, and then suddenly - right in the middle of a guitar phrase - it just stops - and immediately goes on to the next song. That's what creeps me out - it's like they didn't mean to stop, and someone just pulled the plug from their guitars and shut off the lights. Maybe the end part means nothing and it was just them having a good time, but still, it's really cool.

The Beatles – A Day in the Life Lyrics 20 years ago
somebody might have said some of this stuff already.. but anyways, i think there's definetely a parallel between everyday mundane life and the more important things. The speaker seems to be someone who's so overwhelmed by all the news and the violence that he just doesn't care about it any more, and seems to be unemotional about it - there's something surreal about the way his take on what he's heard - like 'now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall'. All the everyday, 'day in the life' events don't hold up, and he keeps going back to the basics- love, sex - the opposite of all the same news over and over - 'i'd love to turn you on', which seems to pop up out of nowhere but really makes sense. Great song.

Alanis Morissette – One Lyrics 21 years ago
this song is great... she sounds so sad as she sings "i have abused my power forgive me ", I get shivers every time I listen to it.
I think it's maybe talking about her earlier days in the music business, when she was a "sexy treadmill capitalist", maybe she thinks she sold out or wasn't true enough to herself. Personally I think she was and is a lot more real than a lot of artists out there, Alanis rocks!!

Alanis Morissette – Can't Not Lyrics 21 years ago
ur right.. you do need to hear the music, in the second verse, it's sounds so dark when she says "would it be whining if I said I needed a hug?", and sounds amazing with the bass up.
-completely underated song on a VERY underated album
