Massive Attack – Man Next Door Lyrics | 11 years ago |
this song reminds me of moments when i wish i could move out of my family home and how i can't because i can't afford to pay rent. |
The Cure – The Same Deep Water as You Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I know they're not related, but these lyrics remind me of the end scene of Butterfly Kiss. There's a suicide pact and the women were lovers of some sort. The drowned one was kind of troubled, and she might've wanted her lover's face to be the last thing she saw before she died. And "Swimming the same deep water as you is hard" might go with how the other, less crazy one felt for the other sometimes. |
The Sisters of Mercy – Under The Gun Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Both the general sound and the percussions of this song, and the style of the female vocals and the slow progression and the bits of guitar phrases remind me of "Is Your Love Strong Enough" by Brian Ferry and Dave Gilmour. I love both songs because this is a kind of sound that I like. It's so late 80's/early 90's. |
The Sisters of Mercy – Lucretia, My Reflection Lyrics | 15 years ago |
But then, there's also an anachronistic quality to this song. Because there are always modern day Borgias. There are new hegemonies. "We got the empire, now as then". The cult of power is the same. |
Neil Young – Rockin' in the Free World Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Think of rock&roll and the aura of heroism that tends to go with it sometimes, seeming to side with the underdog, you know, but sincere as they may be in their protests, rock stars and their audiences are all just cuddled up safely in their "free world" and all they're doing is just entertaining themselves (which is totally fine because music doesn't always have to look like it carries some mission), enjoying the relatively free world that they inhabit.Think of events like Live8.Makes you wanna say "Uh..yeah. Right.. Uhh, rock on buddy, yeah, rock on..." So the chorus is quite self-mocking, I think. Especially in the light of what B Williams 51 has shared. |
The Sisters of Mercy – Lucretia, My Reflection Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Wow, it just hit me. This is totally about the Borgias. Lucrezia's father was first a cardinal, then a very corrupt pope. "We got the kingdom, we got the key We got the empire, now as then," Think about the kingdom of heaven, Saint Peter and the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Beautiful sarcasm. "Such things I hear, they don't make sense I don't see much evidence" This could be both about Pope Alexander VI's atheism(secular popes) or about rumors directed at the family - or both. "A long train held up by page on page A hard reign held up by rage Once a railroad Now it's done..." Once a railroad/Now it's done means your job's finished, like when Lucrezia's husbands we no longer strategically useful to her brother's and father's plans. |
The Sisters of Mercy – When You Don't See Me Lyrics | 15 years ago |
The chords for the chorus remind me so much of Dio's "Rainbow in the Dark". The same violin arpeggios in "Rainbow..." would go so well with this. Anyway, the lyrics are amazing. They're about projection and I totally agree with Merlock on this being about the singer and his fans. But the same dynamics can exist in personal relationships as well. This is a sardonic song about the person reclaiming themselves in a humorous, defiant way. |
Nightwish – She Is My Sin Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Thinking more objectively, this song seems to be about a forbidden relationship between a nun and a priest. The lyrics are full of allusions. "In the meadow of sinful thoughts" is quite religious to begin with. "To paradise, with pleasure haunted by fear" so you engage in the act but it's bittersweet even though it feels like paradise. "A burning veil/For the bride too dear for him" think of 'taking the veil' which means a girl becoming a nun and she becomes a 'bride of Christ'.But it's a burning veil now, because of both burning desire which makes the veil a burden and the idea of hell. "Bless me, undress me" - 'Bless me Father, for I have sinned'.Think of the confessional. "Pick your prey in a wicked way" implies power abuse. "God I must confess..../.....I do envy the sinners" quite intended pun, here. The theme of confession again, but a sardonic one because it is not the sin she confesses, but rather the fact that she envies the sinners and is cheeky enough to say it now and it isn't to a priest this time, but to God in her mind, the reason for which might be that after what's been done, she doesn't really respect the agents of authority anymore, like she's done with it. |
Theatre of Tragedy – Venus Lyrics | 15 years ago |
the second part: iam amore virginali totus ardeo, I am burning all over with first love! the third part: Amor volat undique, Cupid flies everywhere captus est libidine. seized by desire. oh, and there's a fourth part: Tui lucent oculi Your eyes shine sicut solis radii, like the rays of the sun, sicut splendor fulguris like the flashing of lightening lucem donat tenebris. which brightens the darkness. Ah! |
Theatre of Tragedy – Venus Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Anyway now I'll post the translations. You can find the entire collection and its translations online if you're interested, they're quite accessible. Here goes the first part: Circa mea pectora In my heart multa sunt suspiria there are many sighs de tua pulchritudine, for your beauty, que me ledunt misere. which wound me sorely. Ah! -wow, I happen to be feeling just that way for someone these days...*sigh, sigh, sigh* |
Theatre of Tragedy – Venus Lyrics | 15 years ago |
The lyrics are actually from Carmina Burana - a collection of Old German and Latin medieval poems written by monastics if I recall correctly. They are about life, earthly love, some seem didactic. This collection Carl Orff took and set to music. The Carl Orff opera starts with the famous "O, Fortuna!". It's about fate, fortune, the wheel of life. The lyrics start "O fortune! Like the moon, how changeable you are!". Then there's a lot of songs about spring, drinking, gambling, 'the illness of love' as they called it back then just as we do now, and its prescribed remedies and erotic yearnings. Then it ends with a praise to Venus followed by another 'O Fortuna', as is quite fitting with the idea of cycles of life and fortune repeating themselves. Now, the lyrics of this particular song actually come from three different songs in the collection. To be honest, musically I'd much pefer ToT's version over that of Carl Orff. No offense. I did and still enjoy Carl Orff's version as a whole. But the lyrics that ToT has picked are about erotic physical attraction and Carl Orff's music that accompanies those particular lyrics don't seem to convey that feeling very well. Nothing compared to what gothic metal can do. Am I young, or what, hehe:) |
Tool – No Quarter (Led Zeppelin cover) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I agree. The Tool version seems to be more upbeat. The original is more slow moving. |
Underworld – Born Slippy Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I totally agree with you, AKitty0543. I mean I just checked the link and just found out about Candy, but when I heard the song for the first time, it was the gender ambiguity that really struck me. |
Filter – Take A Picture Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I don't know why, but as I was trying to fall asleep turning and twisting in my bet at 3AM, this song entered my head and I just got up and downloaded it:) It's got a very light and fresh feel to it. To me, this is about those goofy, reckless, funny, and drunk times of your life, you know, plain joy. I can so relate to the part that goes "could you only take my picture, cuz I won't remember". |
Nightwish – She Is My Sin Lyrics | 15 years ago |
The way I interpret this song is very personal and specific because when I hear this song it relates so much to my current feelings. See, There's this girl I like - and she doesn't know. What initially made me uncomfortable about recognizing my feelings for her, though, was that I met this girl at a time in my life when I had gotten over my feelings for this other girl that I used to like, and was not hoping to have feelings of this sort again, thinking my life would be much more straightforward (unintended pun) and uncomplicated blah, blah, blah. Anyway, then I ran into this girl - and I liked her. I've gotten older and I'm not terrified by such feelings anymore but I still got that "Oh, no. Not again." feeling as I started realize that I'm really really drawn to this girl. So that's what this song echoes for me. And the girl has dark skin so I especially like the part that goes: "Fall in love with your deep dark sin I am the fallen You are what my sins enclose" Ahh...I think I love you Seb. |
Kansas – Carry on Wayward Son Lyrics | 15 years ago |
When I heard the chorus for this song, I knew it had to be about war. I didn't think specifically about the Vietnam War, but the second line of the chorus that goes "There'll be peace when you are done" immediately reminded me of the notion of "the war to end all wars", what a joke if you think. And I think the line "Carry on my wayward son" reflects the cynicism of the puppet masters, like a pat on the shoulder. |
Armin Van Buuren – This World Is Watching Me (Vs. Rank 1, Feat. Kush) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Even though I'm not the biggest fan of "i'm desperate, pacify me" rhetoric, i really like this song because i think every one feels that way sometimes, during periods of weakness. sometimes the feeling that you're under undeserved scrutiny, weather it's real or imagined, can be overwhelming and i think that's what this song is partially about. it's like, in some relationships - not necessarily 'romantic' ones - where you feel judgmental appraisal is the only form of acceptance available and the idea of sharing humble, human love seems out of the question, the quest of trying to earn that ever-evasive compensation can "...[drain] the blood from [you]" because "nothing ever comes for free." And even when you think you've found a fountain for the kind of sober, humble acceptance you crave, which doesn't have to be a person, but can even be something like God, you "...let go, but [you] cling", because it's something you don't remember having seen and you don't trust what you find unfamiliar. The "Give me faith" part goes especially well with the God idea, but obviously this song isn't about some hesitant religious awakening because of the line about cold kisses:) |
Candi Staton – You've Got The Love Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This song is quite obviously about God. And I have to admit, it's songs like these that make me wish I was a believer... |
Sting – Desert Rose Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I dream of rain I dream of gardens in the desert sand I wake in pain I dream of love as time runs through my hand I dream of fire Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire this song is about deprivation. also i love it cuz i was born and grew up in a city that's built on a desert and where there's no concrete, there's just sand, nothing grows easily on that sandy earth. |
Evanescence – Where Will You Go (First Edition) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
this song, to me, is about someone who looses their voodoo doll and the voodoo doll is the voice speaking. because sometimes, some people can't or won't face themselves or face their truth, so they project all their demons unto another person so that they won't ever have to look in the mirror. and the voodoo doll person has finally realized what has been going on, and she's like, hey i know what you're all about, it's like an epiphany, and she's like face yourself, face yourself, but then she's like, no you won't, i see that you won't, because you don't have the guts, you won't take the responsibility. |

Pantera – Floods Lyrics | 19 years ago |
i didn't know about the band's music 'til i heard my brother listening to this song. and i actually thought the song was kind of crap cuz i like melodic music more, that is 'til it came to the solo at the end. i mean, it really hit my heart. nowadays i just fastforward 'til the end and just listen to the solo, and, i love the way all the 'noise' that leads to the solo is played with thunder in the background, it goes so well, and then the rain comes, such a purifying sound, i mean, it's kind of bittersweet cuz it's about 'wash away us all', but there's something about the sound of rain, that is so embracing and rejuvenating and the whole flood thing is, i mean the flow of the song to me has the feel of this cycle, a 'flood' cycle, that is not necessarily about anything moral or about peace and harmony in mankind, to me it's just this unbreakable cycle that's necessary for there to be life, and you never really know who'll stay and who'll get washed away, sometimes it's the biggest, sometimes it's the fastest, sometimes it's the luckiest. but the song really gives you the feeling of the flood, i mean, the irritating arpeggios at the beginning forewarn the coming disaster and then the music is kind of 'sneaky' like the distant sound of the waters, and then the loud noisy disaster itself and fear and shock and agony and madness, the final lightning strikes, and finally the soothing sound of the rain with the solo that seems to say 'no, this is not the end'. and really, that theme can go for any floodlike, cathartic event in a person's life, not necessarily the end of mankind, though the lyrics are more about the latter. A guilty bliss, so inviting (let me in) : how people shake off true responsibily and play pretend and the appeal of doing so. that's my favorite line. |

A Perfect Circle – Vanishing Lyrics | 19 years ago |
this song has such a tribal feel to it. i mean, the way the drums in the beginning are so rhythmical and they build up to a fuller, thunder-like sound. and the echoing voices in the middle, that go "floating away, floating away" are so ghost-like, as if they're whisperings from another world, and the way maynard sings it, his feminine, lulling voice, so reminiscent of a morbid longing, adds a melancholy air, and the whole thing has the overall feeling of ritual music (which, i think is very nice, because i really hate the fact that people forget that things like music and dance and so many other things today that seem secular have their origins in religion, mysticism, spirituality, magic, etc. and what we have today is a very bastard enjoyment of once sacred things.) i used to skip this song without listening because, i must admit, i didn't, at first, find the beginning very catchy. but, when i did take the time to listen through it, from beginning to end, i had the picture of this man in my mind, this tribal, tatooed, topless man in the ancient times, a kind of shaman, a kind of high-priest-of-the-clan, both his arms raised up high, his gaze fixed on the sky, furiously invoking some power, or maybe conducting some morbid ceremony. apart from this visual imagery, this song, much as i love it, sometimes literally makes my heart ache, because i've experienced so many "vanishing"s in my life in the past few years, and it also has the feeling of being lured by this ingraspable thing deep inside of you, like, living with a black hole in you that's determined to get you, suck you in, you fight the black hole all your life, but the black hole is sure to win, because you were "never really here..." |
