This song is about nostalgia. No wonder those who heard the original Henley version first feel so strongly about it. I'm also of the opinion that the original version is better than the Ataris, its very hard to eclipse the original, especially when it emulates the original so faithfully. My favorite covers are the ones that take a song and make it different and their own. Songs like UB40 covering Neil Diamond's Red Red Wine, The Fine Young Cannibals covering Elvis' Suspicious Minds, and more recently Orgy covering New Order's Blue Monday, but this one is fine cover too. Anyway, the song is about looking and wanting to go back to the past, but realizing that cannot happen, and being very sad about it, since the memories are still so fresh in your mind. like the person's brown skin shining in the sun. The following lyric illustrates it best. The bumper sticker reminding him how much has changed, when an anti-establishment band (Greatful Dead or Black Flag) is posted on a status symbol of establishment like a luxury automobile...
