I saw Ingrid in concert a few weeks back, and she explained that her family (i think aunt?) lives in Maine, and Ingrid used to spend time there and pretend she lived there. That was basically the inspiration for this song, and I think she just added in her artistic abilities from there.
I get the feeling that the first verse is her aunt, or someone she knows in Maine, maybe just the stereotypical wife up there, and the rest of the song is Ingrid. All of Ingrid's songs seem to be pretty personal, especially on Girls and Boys, so I wouldn't try to look TOO deep into it all. |

Onto the song, this is just a song about a summer in Cali, particularly the summer of 2004 when Andrew went back to Cali from touring for nearly three years straight with Something Corporate.
He was poor, he was alienated from the town he called home not too long ago, and nothing was how he remembered it. That's what Everything in Transit is all about pretty much... that summer and what he was going through.
Awesome song. Best on the record in my opinion. |

At the show in Minnesota in February he specifically talked about how he was "smoking a lot pot" when he wrote Into The Airwaves. Then again he said "this is a song about friendship and doing drugs sometimes! hahaha" when he was introducing MFEO/You Can Breathe.
Let's be real here people... Andrew has done plenty of drugs in his 23 years of life. Anyone recall Cavanaugh Park? He talks about getting high when he was in high school. MFEO is so obvious about doing cocaine it's ridiculous!
Should any of that make Andrew any less of a songwriter? NO!! In my opinion, he's top three ever. Who cares if he did drugs to write all of his stuff? He's probably not an awesome role model for the suburbs (as Eminem would say), but damnit he's an amazing songwriter/vocalist/pianist/performer, and a damn good person too.
Stop being naive, open up your eyes, and get over it. |

Easily the best song on the album. The sound is a happy medium between his two sounds he's flirted with. I love it, and I love the anatomical part of this song as well. Where would we be without our lungs? (even though he's speaking with metaphors, it's still kinda cool) |

"It's related to the first record. The song Mud Football on that album was dedicated to Moe Lerner. He was a friend of our family that passed away while I was making Brushfire Fairytales. I started writing If I Could way back then because he'd meant a lot to a whole lot of people out on the North Shore. And before he passed away, he called around to everybody to let everyone know that he was going. He told everybody that he felt really at peace because he had had a chance to meet his grandkids. That was just really a beautiful thing to me. And I wanted to write about it because he was making jokes and everything when he had only two weeks to live. It was really nice that he was able to be so positive about it. I think it had a lot to do with transferring that love from yourself to your kids and, even more, to your grandkids - passing the love and spirit on. We're sort of whole ourselves. But then there's that grander thing of us all being connected." |

Maybe this might ease some of your minds about the whole "are they together or not" talk. Jack said this about this song when interviewed about the album:
"Do You Remember was one that for some reason just popped in my head all of a sudden. I was driving one day, and had this little riff going on in my head. After that, the song just wrote itself pretty quick. It's just a simple love song with some personal moments I wasn't afraid to share. Just kind of silly things like me locking my bike to my wife's - who wasn't even my girlfriend back then, but just this girl I was trying to get - so she couldn't ride off after class. It's just stuff I thought might make people laugh and feel good. It's kind of like Bubble Toes, Part 2." |

I think this is about someone who was crushed by a break up or someone leaving, but are finally kind of getting over it. The person still wants them along with them, hence "But I’d rather be broke down with you by my side"... but he/she is moving on. Great stuff Jack. Please don't ever stop writing music. |

This is one of the best songs ever made. I'm glad the makers of wedding crashers put it in the movie. This song has been a favorite of mine since parachutes came out, and I hear it and it's like holy shit! That's sparks!
This song has got to be about how he's fucked up, and he knows it, but this is the one girl that he's absolutely fallen for and will do anything to get her back. I love the part "i wont let you down... ya i will" he knows he's not perfect but he'll try his hardest for her because she's worth it. |

This is just an awesome song. Every 9/11 song that came out was talking about how bad it was, when there was really a bigger issue beneath everything. Jack so beautifully describes the tragedy in the first verse and then finally addresses the issue
"how could we have known? we'll i'll tell you its not so hard to tell. if you keep adding stones soon the water will be lost in the well."
Jack Johnson at his best. Instead of sitting back and saying "poor us", let's change and make sure this doesn't happen again. |

Ok, the lyrics are wrong. Sunny isn't supposed to be capitalized, it's not a person. It means heaven. Peter Patrick is trying to get to heaven, and he thinks that singing on Sunday (aka going to church every Sunday) is going to make up for all the bad stuff he's done (probably being the leader of this child prostitution ring that Taylor is in). He thinks he's on his way to heaven and he's pitter-pattering on the window to heaven, but in reality, he's not going and he's pitter-pattering on the window because he's on the outside looking it. His brake lights on signifies that he keeps breaking on the road to heaven by doing all this bad shit. So that's the meaning of Peter Patrick. |

I am intrigued by this metaphor talk but in the end, jack is pretty straight forward in most of his songs. And lets face it, this is one of the best love songs ever written. jack is just so personal. I think this is about the same relationship, just different phases of it.
#1 is maybe he didnt want to fall in love with her but its too late because he already has?
#2, maybe he didnt want to fall in love with her because its his friends girl or something (i know im stretching it her but..)
#3, no one sees the stuff he does to convince her to like him, and its just dismissed as fate.
#4, they never hooked up! and he's just left wanting her. |

This song is about Brandon's relationship with whomever it may be, and he broke up with her and now is seeing the harsh realities without her. The "heated choices" he made were breaking up with her, and now he wants her back. He's very indecisive about this relationship, but now he finally "wants off that ride" aka he wants to commit to this girl. He hopes that she still wants him. Also, in adding to the first few comments on this song, I think that the line "you're always first when no one's on your side" is Brandon talking to himself. He's kicking himself while saying this, kinda like he's saying "you wanted to be single, you wanted to be first, and now you are... hows it feel?" Just a few thoughts. |
