Bright Eyes – Messenger Bird's Song Lyrics 20 years ago
I think that the wavery voice of Conor Obert is a match made in heaven with this song. It sounds like he's about to, or already crying. I can completely relate to this song, because my boy friend of 9 months may break up with me, but I'm not sure. He doesn't have the balls to call me and tell me it's over. He just has an away message. So like this guy, I'm being ripped apart waiting for him to answer "Are we through or not?" I don't think I would of understood this song so completely until I had gone through this situation. And an even more coincidence is that this incident just happened today, the day I found this song. (But that's besides the point,) Who ever has scoffed at this song and said Bright Eyes is a horrible band because the singer, you're so musically small minded. He doesn't always sound like that by the way. It just goes with the song. I.E. "Lover I Don't Have To Love" he doesn't sound anything like that....at all.

BRIGHT EYES IS ONE OF THE BEST FUCKING BANDS OUT THERE. "BAD" SINGING OR NOT, CONOR OBERST IS A MUSICAL GENIUS, AND WHO EVER DOESN'T THINK THAT, DON'T EVEN BOTHER TO COMMENT ON THIS PAGE.

The Spill Canvas – Bracelets Lyrics 20 years ago
I think that this song can actually have a number of meanings to different people. For example, the "love conquers all" theme, a soldier, or a person who is dealing with a physical sickness.

The love thing was already explained..so I'll just explain why I think it could seem like a soldier's anthem to some one.

"And the trigger pulls
The bullets pepper (pepper) the brick wall behind our heads
and the smoke, it fills the air (smoke, it fills the air)
The captain yells to cease fire
and the squad begins to wait and stare
as the dust clears the air, and we're still standing
With smiles on both our faces
we spit their faulty ammo to the ground
and remind them once again
With smiles on both our faces
we spit their faulty ammo to the ground
and remind them once again
that you can't kill heroes"

Those lines could be the soldier remeniscing (sp) about his days in war. And how it felt when they finally succeeded in their cause, and they could put "smiles on both" their "faces
and "spit" the enemies' "faulty ammo to the ground
and remind them once again
that you can't kill heroes"
And while they were enjoying the fruits of their victory, they made sure that they would remind their enemy that their comrads who fell in battle are heroes, and will not be forgotten. So, in a sense they nevre really were killed, because they will always be in their thoughts.

The lines:

"I am the bracelet you sport
I am everything (everything)
that you have ever missed, and more

I was hoping I could tell you this with two feet on the ground
But I don't think I can talk,
because I'm not very stable right now
Yeah (yeah)

In this dream that I had....
"You can't kill heroes"- that's what we said to them
"You can't kill us"
With our instruments broken before us
and the boys in the line they begin to count to five"

Make me think of some one who is physically sick, like with a cancer or another life threatening disease. Many people are aware of the "livestrong" bracelets, right? Well, when you think about it..those bracelets we "sport" are in a sense those people. Because they were originally made to support the people who are fighting a life threatening disease. "I'm not very stable right now." Shows how they are being treated for their condition, but until the pocedure is completed, they are unstable, and unable to "talk" and let other people know that things will be alright. They dream of when they will be well again. Most people who defeat cancer are considered heroes to many, because it's almost an impossible disease to over come, and I'm sure that anyone that is diagnosed with it dreams that "You can't kill heroes." And even though their "instruments (or their bodies) are broken before us" they believe that they will become a hero, and achieve their dream.

Anyway..I decided to throw down a few more ideas that we can all pick apart. I don't know if anyone will agree, but hey, i think it's a pretty good arguement.

Something Corporate – Only Ashes Lyrics 20 years ago
This song always makes me think that he was in a horrible relationship. A person he had once loved, and had faith in changed right before his eyes. When he says the lines:

"I can tell as you turn, I smell the sulfur so clear
And fire's a beautiful sound
And the wings that you burn turn to ashes my dear
And ashes just fall to the ground"

I think that this pretty much sums up the entire vibe of the song. He once knew a person that was kind and loving. But, as their "matches turn to ashes" (or their relationship slowly dims) he realizes that they have been a phoney all the while. And as they "turn" into some one that thinks they are above us all. He can see their once angelic "wings" turning to ashes. And, he just wants them to realize that they too are only ashes, and just like the rest of us they will return to their true form..

Straylight Run – Another Word For Desperate Lyrics 20 years ago
When ever i listen to this song, I picture to friends. One is pouring his sorrows onto another, wether it be from a girl, or as other people are saying from a band, or some other situation. And, after he tells his friend how he feels the other boy wants to say to him, "if you ask me, you're pretty desperate." But, since they are friends, he might feel it's a bit too harsh to say. So he wants to know "What's another word for desperate (thay i can describe you with.?)" After the boy says that to him, he realizes that he is desperate. And he seems to turn to alcohol to mask it all:

"So tip the bottle back,
bubble foam, and watch it break
We can all be sure
something awful's coming this way

So take this medicine
and measure doses,
take your time
'cause they'll tear into you
They will, they will, they will, they will"

He knows: "something awful's coming this way" if he continues to put himself through this crap. After he is sober enough to think, he goes to pills, and says to himself "So take this medicine
and measure doses,
take your time (they'll help make it better soon)
'cause they'll tear into you
They will, they will, they will, they will (if you keep up with this)"

But, then the chorus is still repeated and so is the line: "And they'll tear into you
They will, they will, they will, they will"

That seems like the fact of what his friend said to him is still ringing in his head, and nothing seems to be working. So, he decides to leave it all behind in the ending lines:

"Take it apart and let it all go
Holdin' it back it's all just so..(hard)
Why did I care (not to stop it)?
How did it go (on for so long)?
Wait for a while and I guess that
I won't be around here
for too very long
I won't be around here
for too very long"

Obviously, I just added into what I think they are saying with a (...) things. (so they aren't corrections or anything..) Feel free to say I'm wrong, but that's what I picture when I hear this song, it's amazing the story they wrote with only one song.

Straylight Run – Sympathy For The Martyr Lyrics 20 years ago
I agree with Anome by the way, this person is just feeling sorry for themselves, and twisting reality into a fantasy of everybody vs. them. They think that they're some kind of "martyr," dying for their own causes...when they are really only "spiting," or fooling, themselves. And he is making it a point to to tell them. Very vengeful.

The Spill Canvas – Sunsets And Car Crashes Lyrics 20 years ago
You people that don't this song because of a beginning must have no depth at all. If you as me I love the beginning and the end. If you listen to the lyrics, the beginning and the end seem as thought they are rewinding the song, rewinding the tragedy that has occured. This song is amazingly beautiful, but still no matter the beauty it has, it is in fact a tragedy. The song speaks of how two lovers finally admit their love for one another, but after they are involved in a car accident, in which no one survives.

"And I collapsed to the grass with the notes ringing in my head
Let the rain form a mouth and in a couple hours I'll be dead
But all the while my lips are whistling our tune
But the beauty lies in how you will revive me soon"

That part really gives away the fact that they both die.

"And I collapsed to the grass with the notes ringing in my head
Let the rain form a mouth and in a couple hours I'll be dead"

After he is hit by the car, he manages to climb out, though since he is severly injured he collapses in the grass, while his head is ringing with thoughts of all that has happened since. And while he lies there, he wishes that the sky that is raining on him above would "form a mouth" that would be able to consume him, making him die right there and then...since he knows that his love is already dead. "But all the while my lips are whistling our tune
But the beauty lies in how you will revive me soon" He is still having memories of their past playing in his head, and he is attempting to sing their "tune" to comfort himself. But, what he is really waiting for, is death, and to see his love "reviving" him into a new life.

"And in case you, and in case you, and in case you were wondering, You were like a sunset to me
You're all kinds of beatiful as you end my day
And you sweetly retire, as the stars chase you away"

The refrain has a very specific meaning in this song. He says that she is like a sunset, and if you think of that it's not only the beauty that counts. After a sunset, always comes a night, and another day. It is a beautiful ending, openning up to a whole new chapter, and when he thinks of her, he sees a sunset openning up a new chapter of himself. But, at the moment she is out of his grasp because "the stars" have chased her away. And in the end, where he instead puts everything, he is again reunited with her.

..so bitter sweet...amazing..just amazing.

Something Corporate – Little Lyrics 20 years ago
Well, I had a whole speel on what I thought the song meant last night. But, it said "this page cannot be displayed" after. Man, that pissed me off. I guess I'll just redue it..-_-

"Climbing out of the sky a man who could fly and a painting anyone could play. It’s a comic book crush that taught you to trust. Staring out of the stands at a rock n roll band and a hero no one else could save, it was never much but it’s all that you gave."

This song is about a boy, and a girl. To the girl this is what the boy is to her, a hero. It's like a comic book for both of them. For the girl, she finds her hero, the boy finds his damsel in distress. And, even though he may no be picture perfect in everyway, he gives his all at what ever he does. And, she admires him for that.

"And I wonder if you wonder, or did your stars finally explode? Did the thunder pull you underneath the haze? I’m amazed, than I let go."

Soon, the girl begins to have mixed feelings. Her hero seems to be fading before her eyes. She;'s wondering if he sees what she sees is happening to him. But, after she wonders she finds that he's becoming insecure, and he isn't much of a hero anymore. So, after her "amazement" she thinks she should "let go."

"Little minds let little games burn big old dreams with little flames, and you don’t think I understand. Little holes in parachutes won’t leave you falling, if they do, it’s because you want to land. "

She's singing what she feels when she thinks of the boy. She thinks that he is some what pathetic for allowing his dreams to be extinguished so easily. And his will to reach those extinguished dreams was broken by "little holes." But, to her, the only way those "little holes" can make you fall is if you let them. He doesn't think she understands, but she does....Possibly more than he does himself.

"Climbing out of his chair to fix the T.V. glare is a man but no one knows he’s there. It’s a Dramamine dream that kept them alive but lost. She’s got her plastic friends and a brand new Benz and she laughs, “Hell, sometimes life ain’t fair” It’s a comic book crush that got them nowhere. "

The girl sees the boy as leading a life to nowhere. "Dramamine" is a drug to cure things like motion sickness. That seems to be used as a metaphor with a "Dramamine dream." If they didn't have the "Dramamine" their "dream" would of sickened them both. After the girl finally decides to leave the boy, she turns to her "plastic friends" who seem to be living a more exciting, succeful life (with a benz.) The boy must have asked her why she's leaving him, and as she's about to leave him she yells back, "Hell sometimes life ain't fair." So, it's a "comic book crush that got them nowhere."

"These elevator doors are closing again you leave before I planned. I taste you walking down the hall. You left your perfume on the nightstand."

This last line shows how the two of them are finally reaquianted after many years. The boy, now a man, and the girl, now a woman. It seems they have an unplanned rondezvous, either at a hotel, or an apartment complex. (explaining the elevator doors, and the perfume on the nightstand) My guss is that she must have moved in with him for sometime, feeling that their chemistry was back. But, again, she began to have mixed feelings about the man. And, one morning she decided to leave. The most painless way to leave the man would be to sneak out quickly before he woke up. But, in her rush she leaved a few articles, such as the "perfume on the nightstand." Which the man wakes up just in time to notice. He runs to the elevator, only to find his only love leaving him once again, through closing elevator doors.

It's a sadder song that it seems to sound like...I'd love to find out where the inspiration of this song came from....

Amazing though!

Woops, I wanted to say what I thought of this song before I entered that...I think that this song is deffinately showing SoCo's heavier side. I like how they are shifting their usual themes a bit. I wouldn't say that this song is "the coolest ever," or my favorite...but I do like the originality.

"you say
That you have,
When you know,
That you don't,
And you say,
That you can,
When you know,
That you won't"

First, you need to realize the words he sings prior to the line: "In this place
The lonely escapade in outer space
There's no anecdote for irony, you say"

He's saying he's been in a place that has been as empty as outserspace, and he was forced to go on this escapade in his loneliness. (by the way, if you don't know what an escapade is it is an adventurous, unconventional act or undertaking) Then it goes on to talk about an "anecdote for irony" this to me is pure genious. As you all know, the word "irony" means something that happens opposite to what you expected. And, an anecdote is a story, that relfects what you're speaking of. The person saying the line to him is saying that there is no possible anecdote for irony because irony is a thing that no one can predict. But, he seems to think different from them. He is pretty much saying that he's overwheled at the moment, and he just needs them to go away, and let him think things over. Anyway, this is what I think he means when he says these lines:

"You say that you have (felt this way before)
But I know that you don't (know how I feel)
And you say that you can (make it better)
But I know that you won't (help at all)"

I hope that makes sense...

Something Corporate – Me And The Moon Lyrics 21 years ago
This si deffinately not about suicide. It's about murder. When ever I hear this song, I think of a woman who was pushed to the brink of insanity. Think of it, she still fixes the dinner, as if he's still there. (If you listen really hard, you can actually hear the clanking of the dishes as she washes them...it's really beautiful, it makes you feel as though you're right there in the middle of the event.) The part in the song that really sends out a signal to me that she's gone insane is these two parts:

"And it's over, but just started
The blood stained the carpet
Her heart like a crystal
She's lucid and departed
A life left behind, she can find in her mind gone away"

In the song it even says that she has left her prior way of life behind, she's forgotten it. The past is gone, a long with her mind, and soul. She's conpletely unreachable.

"Away with these nightmares
Away with suburbia
Shakedown away
You marry a role and
You give up your soul til you break down"

This part again states how she's going insane. It says that when she married this man, she gave up so much of herself, that she was breaking down to her last straw.

Now, for the line that confuses people all together:

"But I am a butterfly, you wouldn't let me die"

Everyone seems to think that the butterfly part is a metaphor already, which is true. But, the part about the "dying" is also. She's saying "I once had a beautiful soul, I once had everything I wished and hoped for. Are you really going to let me die inside?" Her soul is dead, not her body.

I absolutely love this song. It's the most emotional I've ever heard. And I think that it was intended to make people have different opinions, it was intended to teach a certain lesson to who ever heard it. There most likely are multiple meanings to it....or we are all just over examening it.

The Junior Varsity – Falling Far Behind Lyrics 21 years ago
How could no one of commented on this song?! This is by far my favorite song by The Junior Varsity. I think this song is about how it's hard for him to talk to a girl he has feelings for:

Sentimental whispers
Drawing through my breath
And i am hearing every word you said
All these distractions
Everything i know
Here i stand now
Nothing left to show

She's telling him how she feels about him, and he hears her. But, all the thoughts in his head are distracting him from saying exactly how he feels for her. So he's standing there "(with) Nothing left to show"

I am waiting, waiting on the line
Falling fast and falling far behind

This could either be the girl's or his point of view: The girl is "waiting on the line" of knowing wether he feels the same, and since he's lost for words, and not showing much emotion, she's "falling fast..." from how she felt before. It could also go for the boy though, too. He is "waiting on the line" of himself. He's trying to pass that line, and tell her how he really feels, but he can't keep up with the 'race' and he's "falling...behind," because she may never know how he really feels, and if he doesn't tell her now, she could be gone forever.

Now i have these
Wasted thoughts instead
Circle everything
Cycle in my head

This seems to be his thoughts after the event. (or him thinking what will happen after if he can't tell her.) Wether he told her how he felt, or not, it still seems as though it didn't come out right. So, now he has "these wasted thoughts instead (of what he meant to have said)" And they keep replaying in his mind, like the cycle of a circle that never ends.

I hope that all makes sense..

Something Corporate – Straw Dog Lyrics 21 years ago
One more thing. This also seems to show the fact of being on drugs:

Staring into the intersection, she thinks that she can fly and she might
Holding on in a new direction, she's gonna try it tonight

People that are on drugs such as halusagins (spl) tend to think that they can do things such as flying. And those thoughts generally lead to their demise.

Holding on in a new direction, she's gonna try it tonight
The closer I get to feeling, the further that I'm feeling from alright
The more I step into the sun, the more I step out of the light

That refers to a drug addiction. Every time she is able to get her hands on something, for a moment she will feel alright. So, she is stepping into the "sun" but just before she can reaches, she steps "out of the light." in other words, she tries so hard to feel better about her life by using these drugs, but it's only temperary, and when she's back in reality, everything is worse.

Something Corporate – Straw Dog Lyrics 21 years ago
I love this song. But, I can't help but think of a play boy bunny star. Or some other kind of model who is accicted to cocaine, or another drug.

"If she gets nowhere in life, at least she know's she pretty"

10 to 1 a playboy will turn out to have a horrible life, but at least they know they're pretty.

She said, "Hey, now, the straw dog's out in the street
Hey now, there's chemicals in the clouds
Hey now, they're calling the police
They won't get to us, anyhow."

Now, how many people that aren't on a drug would think of a straw dog being in the street? It oculd also be a metaphor like milkcartonkid said. But, I think the fact that the dog is straw has a signifigance. You ever heard of the three little pigs? Straw is destoryed easily, just like she is being. And the fact that there are "chemicals in the clouds" seems to just bring me back to the whole drugatic bit. And when he says "they'll never get to us" makes me think about how she feels when she's in the high of the moment, literally, high. And, in that moment she feels untouchable.

That whole thing may be a little farfetched..but oh well. That's what comes to mind when I hear it! And even if it has a weird meaning to me, I still love this song!
