The ritual is sex. The song is from the perspective of someone who doesn't understand "selfless" love and can only understand selfish motivations. So they conclude that everyone else is the same, with only selfish love. They pick and choose who they proclaim to love (and seduce and sleep with) for their own selfish benefits. They assume that everyone who doesn't go for their own benefit like is doing it out of cowardice, not because of any emotional attachment to those they dismiss as "dirt". The meaning of the ritual, the reason for sex, for them is lacking in any expression of intimacy and just a selfish fulfilment of carnal needs. |

This song strikes me as being about a woman who learns her partner is actually a transsexual. He 'comes out' after getting her pregnant, and leaves her, and she goes to a priest. Despite the priests offer to look after her and the baby (the issue of her worm) gets an "unofficial" abortion (the hardened metal spoon) but still stays with the priest. The transsexual confronts her about the abortion, and she taunts the man (saying she's severed the last link between them), and mocks his "female fashions and working class moustache" (literally: He wants to be a woman, but he's biologically a man). The man starts a sex change (woman's education), whilst the women stays with the priest who she doesn't love but at least he provides for her (he's just some boy, giving her soul an empty room, and her body joy). |

| This song is easy to understand without and with religion, though the meaning changes greatly. This song sounds like a seven year old me (or maybe 6, maybe 8, dunno. It was awhile ago). Despite growing up in a aethist family, I was christian (damn teacher brainwashed me. At that age children absorb what they are told and take it for fact!). Then my great grandmother died, who I really liked. Long story short, I ceased to be religious. Different from Evanescence's usual stuff, but for the love of all that is evil, when did trying something different mean they were doing something wrong?!? Trivium made Dying In Your Arms, which fans branded as a 'Radio' song and said was a piece of sh!t. Whenever they played it live, BOOM the ceiling flew off though! It got the crowd going almost as much as pull harder on the strings of your martyr! This song will draw in people who don't usually like evanescences music, they will listen to their other stuff, decide they like it and BOOM, Evanescence has more fans. Personally I like this song, not their best but still very good. |

To me this song seems to be about Poverty. Beggars seem to be aimlessly drifting from day to day They Beg/Sing (singing usually off-key) and people drop in small amounts of money (occassionally) like they care that they are begging to no longer be Beggars. They have no hand in the world, they do not usually vote etc. and people avoid them like a wall is between them. The paper sell images of them as drug addicts and crack heads, which isn't always true. If they offend you as they try to explain their situation, they want you to please listen to them. 'Fancy' and 'Posh' clothing don't make a difference, we are all human and still feel pain, beggar or not. Can you name you problems? If so I congratulate you. Will you conquer your problems or will they destroy you and put you on the street? If you can defeat them, I can't congratulate you because we are from a different class of society. People try to ignore them, giving people peace of mind by making Beggars 'silent' If a beggar finds peace they find money, and so are free from the curse of the streets. With the money and freedom, they are no longer there so they are 'silent' to people again. |
