Titus Andronicus – Joset of Nazareth's Blues Lyrics 15 years ago
There is nothing I've ever done
I didn't learn to be ashamed of.
- maybe jesus' brother feels like shit, because everything his brother does is perfect, supposedly never even sinned. so naturally he's gonna be ashamed of everything he does.

There is no hope or no dream
I won't curse and demean.
If that's what it takes,
that's what I'll do.
- so he is in a pretty bad mood all the time, a real grouch. i would be like to too.

I hope I never get my fill
of pushing this boulder up on this hill,
getting to the top and taking a spill.
Every time's like the first time.
- reference to sisyphus, doing something hard only to fail, and you have to do it over again forever.

and maybe you don't believe me now,
but you will.
- when we die, if we find out jesus had a brother, whoops. it means mary didn't stay a virgin and is not as pure as some people thought. or if we die, and find out jesus and god are full of shit, then we could believe joset, and how he has got the blues

Until you hang upon such a cross,
you won't know a thing about laughter or loss.
- joset would probably feel really inferior to jesus, haha, obviously. i think this is other people's words that joset would hear, the voices tell him that he is not as good as his brother because he didn't die a gruesome death. haha, like dying a gruesome death is the only way to experience life. and joset knows that he can experience everything of life (laughter and loss) without doing this, sure, everyone can, but the other people have this assumption that joset cannot fully live like jesus did

From Galilee to Gethsemane to Golgotha
is a short walk, a short, short walk.
- yeah everything is much closer than it seems, people think jesus is such a big deal, but its just little people, a small town, everyone blows it out of proportion, having a 'famous' brother, knowing that either that you'll never be as good as him, or he is full of shit, and you're the only one who knows, thats enough to give anyone the blues

Native Nod – High Tide in Alaska Lyrics 15 years ago
this band was really great, the whole discography, just amazing

i thought this song was about the whaling industry:
a ship is getting destroyed in a storm ("the force of the waves was too much for its walls")
but the captain is greedy and wants to take in another catch ("pour on another eighty thousand pounds")
naturally the ship sinks and people die

i think a whale would weigh about 80,000 lbs?
it really paints a gruesome picture of how sick the captain is, see loves to see the whales (or whatever) suffering and all

i don't know if this a based on a real event, or is just a story made up, but either way it gets the point across

why don't people make music like this anymore? this stuff is awesome

I Hate Myself – Roy On The Make Lyrics 15 years ago
Hey, thanks so much for posting these. I'm glad to see people still are listening to this awesome band.

I thought the one line "a coquette's wand" was "a coke-head's want". Like, the character in the story (real or imaginary), Roy, is begging for the lightning in the same way that a coke-head would be begging for coke, some irrational addiction.

But what I don't understand is if he's asking the lightning to kill him or to be in love with him. The "on the make" in the title suggests he's looking for love, but when he talks about "life is grief", it seems the other way. The phrase "stop my heart" could really mean either thing, I guess maybe it's meant to be ambiguous that way.

Really cool song.

of course i think jon also said that jim wrote the entire thing and was the only one who knew what it meant... by the way did anyone see that new live video? they had a third guy, playing guitar and sounded like they have a bunch of new songs, but i have no idea

Die Hoffnung – Tour of Bridges Lyrics 16 years ago
this is a pretty cool song, i remember jon marburger saying something about this song being like a metaphor for life. there were no other lyrics anywhere, so i did my best to transcribe them. but there are some obvious things i couldn't figure out, and i just put down whatever sounds close but makes no sense. so if you have any better ideas go ahead and put them down.

Fugazi – Waiting Room Lyrics 16 years ago
i know a lot of this song sounds political but every time i hear the first verse

I am a patient boy // I wait, I wait, I wait // My time's water down the drain // Everybody's moving, everything is moving // Please don't leave me to remain in the waiting room

it makes me think of... oh nevermind its probably just because i have no game that i think of that, im sure the song is supposed to be more political

Although if I'm listening to the music, I think it sounds sincere -- On the other hand, if I'm just reading the words, it seems to be making fun of them

I Hate Myself – Darren's Roof Lyrics 17 years ago
It seems like this song is written to poke fun at people who are going nowhere -- they have shitty lives but they can forget about that for one night a week, when they party on Darren's roof. And that's the only reason they live. Seems like Jim is disgusted by that; though the only evidence I really see of that fact is that he says "bad tattoos", it seems like he's making fun of them.

I Hate Myself – To A Husband At War Lyrics 17 years ago
if i didnt know any better, id think the brothers marburger were a lady in the 1900s who lost her husband at war but doesnt want to admit it. i think she's in phase one of grief -- denial (for example, knew/know, my/out room)

aw this song is great, Roy keeps getting struck by lightning, thinking he's cursed. but this shows things from the lightning's point of view. the lightning just wants Roy's love. poor lightning, poor Roy

i think it's "the frosty drops" of cold vanilla
the i and o keys are just shifted one space to the left of the o and p keys. i looks like it was just a typing mistake, caused by partial hand misalignment. besides, i dont know what "drios" are, unless its some mexican kind of dessert.
i remember first listening to this song in the summer of 2004. it brings back such memories. great song

Also, I think that line of speech before the song is: "And that is the vision of anarchist..."

The date should be December 13, 1981. That's the day when martial law was formally declared in Poland. Solidarity posters from this time period (early 1980's) look like RANCID album art.

The Movielife – Thermals Lyrics 18 years ago
This song opens with the lines:

"Don't feel you've failed me. My pleasure is in making you happy." She wondered how many other women had he said the same thing to.

It comes from a romance novel, "Once Is Not Enough" by Jacqueline Susann. I have no idea what it means in relation to the song,

The Movielife – Valens Lyrics 18 years ago
Also, I can't decipher the title or how it would relate to this song. I know that "valens" comes from the Latin word that means strength or power (where we get the word "valient" and others) and it was also the name of a Roman emperor. So basically means something about power?

The Movielife – Valens Lyrics 18 years ago
This song has crazy lyrics no doubt. It's got to be highly metaphorical, and I can't quite figure out what it means. The "flame" on the couch represents something, maybe a passion that he brings back to life (rekindles) and protects (wards the wind). But then the last part sounds like he murders someone he likes. First they "clicked" meaning they get along great? Then he "clicked" the trigger of the gun, "pointed, squinted, and pulled". Then he's forever punished for this action. That's just my interpretation, whatever it means, awesome song, Movielife rocks.

Modest Mouse – All Night Diner Lyrics 19 years ago
also, i'm sure this has nothing to do with anything, but i recall reading chaucer's cantebury tales, and the one character had a snaggletooth which is a common theme in literature to denote sexual aberrance, promiscuity, etc. i think the crazy old man in james joyce's dubliners, an encounter, also had this... so perhaps isaac is using this as som character development via physical traits whether or not he was on meth

I Hate Myself – ...and Keep Reaching For Those Stars Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah, I would think that for this guy, being "fucked up all the time" would be considered something good, like feeling high. But yeah, there is still that irony of why this guy would be aspiring to be in a motorcycle gang. That might be a high goal for some people, but it's really nothing like aspirations to become wealthy, powerful, affluent, etc.

So yeah, while I don't think that one line is exactly it, I'm starting to think this whole song is a mockery of a loser's life. The title really seems to be mocking this guy "and keep reaching for those stars", if your dreams are to be a biker, go out and do it, the guy who kills himself because he can't is a loser for two reasons: in the first place, his aspirations are not praiseworthy and secondly he can't even motivate himself to do these simple things. I just think of this song as the portrait of a loser, and I really like it because that's me, that's me...

Miracle of 86 – Sunday School Lyrics 19 years ago
Also, when I was in grade school I was obsessed with Miracle of 86 and made complete transcriptions (Guitars, Bass, Drums, Vocals) of just about every song. They're reasonably accurate, at least enough to let you pull off your own covers. If you'd like to see them please holler.

Miracle of 86 – Sunday School Lyrics 19 years ago
I really like this song, it reminds me of my childhood. I think the underlying theme here is innocence and the loss of innocence.

"there's a sunday school four blocks away from you" - in this person there is present some innocent state, though it is removed (four blocks away)

"skip rocks across the lawn to sidestep what we've become" - skipping rocks is a child's game, here it's like in order to cope with what bad things we've done, we pretend to be little again or recall our former state of innocence

"but there's a stained-glass scene of the nativity" even though we try to cover up our wrongdoings by re-inacting our innocence, a God is always watching and knows exactly what we've done, and we feel the guilt "burning holes through you and me"

"if we're never gonna be this innocent again, then why pretend?" - the whole point of the song I believe, stated pretty explicitly

I think the "something left to lose" is virginity, if you still have your virginity, you have nothing to prove. Sounds like he overheard his girlfriend talk about how she lost her virginity possibly

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I think the main theme here is that people escape their immorality by pretending to be innocent like children, but there is something watching that knows and punishes them. Can't escape it.

Miracle of 86 – Every Famous Last Word Lyrics 19 years ago
well, i will agree that the acoustic version is melodious, but i have to say that it lacks a lot of the raw energy, intensity, and emotion that the full version has. for instance, when kevin screams out "i was a trapdoor..." in the acoustic version he sounds sorrowful, but in the full version he is sorrowful, angry, confused, et. al. and i just pick that up much more from the full version.

but regardless of how you play it, the song is a marvel

Miracle of 86 – Red 19 Lyrics 19 years ago
"Red 19" is once-popular coloring agent, along the same lines as things like "Yellow 5" "Orange 18" etc. It was common in coloring foods and cosmetics years ago, until it was banned by the FDA as being a cancer-causing agent. According to a few sources, there are still cosmetic manufacturers which use Red 19 in lipsticks. Gives a whole new meaning to "kiss of death"

Miracle of 86 – Every Famous Last Word Lyrics 19 years ago
i first thought it was "alpha bet you" instead of "alphabet you", thinking it meant like "alpha" the head of a fraternity bet him to do it, knowing kevin it's probably some type of wordplay

probably my favorite song in the world (the real version, not the acoustic one)

Built to Spill – Distopian Dream Girl Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is great, regardless of what other bands you favor. It seems to hit a strange combination of "life in general" and "completely random". I mean, from my point of view I'm not really even sure if other people exist, so to me, my death would be the end of everything. In this song he recognizes that high moral principle of giving one's life for the life of another. He points out the absurdity to it, absudity which perhaps increases the moral worth of that particular action. Great song, Listen.

remember what blink 182 was like before being suckered into major record contracts? yeah, this song is from that era of immaturity but honesty and regardless of what they say on MTV and as sick as it sounds, this song is about wacking off. take a second to think of what "sally", a salamander, symbolizes . . .
