What I love most about this song is that, although I believe it was written to convey something simple, it also can be a metaphor for something more profound. Truly wonderful poems can do this. |

I think when he says "I want a lover I don't have to love" he halfway doesn't mean it. I think a part of him (not him, but this character he's taking on when writing this, whatever) seeks meaningless sex, drugs that numb him. I think he thinks it's a way he can avoid feelings or ties. But he knows it's impossible to avoid feelings or ties, so in the end he just ends up hurting himself. However, he can't conquer this bad side of him and just accepts it, accepting he will get hurt: "then hurt me." |

There's more to them than their lyrics. Can't you appreciate them for their awesome sound? Some people like the way they put words together; some think it's haphazard. Regardless of either opinion, they have such interesting music. |

I never thought of this song that way (the parent/child) relationship, but it really does make sense now that I think about it. Very insightful, cooltobecolleen. I always imagined that it was his girlfriend driving, but the innocent questions suggest a different situation. At any rate, I love this song. I don't know if it's the diction or lyricism, but the first time I heard it I experienced the song instead of just listening to it. It evokes such a familiar, pleasant feeling,a feeling of safety and perfect contentment that I apparently can't get enough of! |
