Elliott Smith – A Fond Farewell Lyrics 17 years ago
"by dontbescarried on 11-30-2007 @ 01:22:00 AM
This song was written in response to the deaths of Tupac and Biggie Smalls. "I see you're leaving me and taking up with the enemy " This line is in refference to when Tupac and B.I.G. used to be good friends, then Pac moved to the west coast and got signed to Death Row. The rest is history, the feuding, the gunfire and eventually the untimely deaths of raps pride and joy. Elliott was deeply in tune with the happenings of West vs. East rap battles and this song is meant as a tribute to those fallen rappers. "

Hahahahah man I was going to write something silly like that to take the edge off all the disagreements but alas I was beat to it...

Ah well.

In my opinion it is definitely not a suicide song methinks despite how so many people think it is. I do also agree that the song has drug references but as said above I don't neccesarily think the whole song is about it. Its what I've thought since basement was released and its what I'll think forever.

There is no point recapitulating the arguements because everybody has already said them with reference to the quotes I'd use. The song has a few moments that just screams of the gear and it seems that anybody with the fortunate\unfortunate experience of tasting the stuff seems to agree.

Saves the Day – This Is Not An Exit Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm quite suprised that only one person out of all these comments picked up on the fact that the title of this song is a famous line from American Psycho. Type it into google, there is in even a doco made on Bret Easton Ellis' works.
For people who think it's regarding dying, it's kinda relavent. Personally I'm not even going to try and analyse this song, I don't even like it.

MadHatter101 - Thanks for the Lost Keys background, your interpretation fits very well.
Despite the arguments I still feel that the rapidfire start of the song (up to 'holy fucking shit') is trying to capture the onset of DMT

To begin with I immediately thought that the song was somewhat capturing DMT at the beginning and progressing into high dose LSD. This thought is not purely based on lyric content but the way the music progresses - which is something that I believe people forget to pay attention to when they get lost finding quotes from the lyrics and using them to form logical conclusions like you would when analysing poetry. Also I get the vibe that it tries to portray the concept of when you go in too far and experience so much at once that it becomes very difficult to piece together the newfound discoveries of existance and what exactly occured in your journeys 'Can't remember what they said'. This type of effect I think is more likely to occur from trying to piece together the alien fizzle that DMT bombards you with.

For those who have done DMT before and have had an overally intense and hectic trip from it, you can probably relate to the line 'Can't breath right now...'

Tool – Jimmy Lyrics 20 years ago
T_E_O is right in my opinion. Aenima is very much about evolution on the album, and they are very much into numerology it seems.
Anybody getting a grasp on 46 & 2? It's all about evolution as well. In this song, heading back home is a metaphor to evolving into the inevitable form without physical existance. He feels we've been there before because that is where we came from.
Take note of the movement of this theme throughout the album. Look at the track H. before 46 & 2:
"I have died, and will die, it's all right, I don't mind." Then for 46 & 2
"Feel my shadow, streching up and over me... coming out the otherside etc", and then in Jimmy he refers to his old self as a different person "He was too strong to realize that
You you were the voice that was calling me back home..."
Then the song aenima is about preparing for the cleanse of ego bound commericalism.
Third Eye speaks for itself...

There is much more that I could write on this approach that I can't be bothered putting down =P.

Xiu Xiu – Crank Heart Lyrics 21 years ago
First post here...
I think this song is about meth, plain and simple.
Ever smoked crystal?? Listen to the music in the song, the beginning is like the paranoid tweak rush... the throbbing heart beat at the end of the intro.
The lyrics tie in pretty well with this interpretation as well.
