definitely agree with the person above, seems to be about idealistic/rebellious college students being lured to big business. I'd say it satirizes naiveté more than it criticizes capitalism--but then, the whole thing may be toungue-in-cheek. |

Also, I've been meaning to download the iTunes version, but for now my favorite version is the NPR one--but with the verse he accidentally repeats edited out. I just don't care for the background "oohs" on the original--they push it dangerously close to "sappy" territory. |

This song probably does go with "Shankhill Butchers." Between this and "After the Bombs," I wonder if ALL the album's songs didn't originally have counterparts. "Crane Wife" is obvious, "The Island" is really three songs, "After the Bombs" comes after "Sons & Daughters," and "O, Valencia" could easily connect with "Yankee Bayonet." There's said to be a "Perfect Crime #1," as well as outtakes called "The Day I knew You'd Not Come Back" and "Hurdles even Here," which sound like they could easily tie with "When the War Came" and "Summersong," respectively. |
