Neko Case – Maybe Sparrow Lyrics 15 years ago
Such a powerful song. The best part, probably of the entire album, is:

Oh my sparrow, it's too late
Your body limp beneath my feet
Your dusty eyes cold as clay
You didn't hear my warning
Didn't hear my warning

She just pours all of herself into this and does such great things with melody at the same time. Her voice is incredible and really broadens the reach of her music, especially in her harmonies.

Kathleen Edwards – Asking For Flowers Lyrics 15 years ago
I can't believe no one has commented on this song yet. This was the first Kathleen Edwards song I heard, and from the very beginning, it caught my attention. The chords are simple but played with something great, and I strongly suspect that her accent almost nearly makes this song. I love "time is just an anchor", "all that's left of me now is a cigarette burning bright", and "every cruel word you let just slip out." I also love the music for the pre-chorus, "Every pill...". So great.

i love this. her phrasing and delivery are so lovely and devastating. this song has such a feeling of movement and also staying stationary at the same time.

Stevie Nicks – Bella Donna Lyrics 15 years ago
I love how haunting and powerful this song is. I can't believe more people haven't commented on this yet.

My favorite part of this is the melodic idea that presents itself in, "No speed limit, this is the fast lane" and "And the woman may be so awestruck..." especially "It's just the way that it is here"/"But the woman is so tired". That part just shakes me up every time, and Stevie delivers this song so well.

I definitely see how this song is kind of a letter to yourself. "Bella donna...my soul..." This song conveys sort of an understanding and compassion with the lowest parts of yourself and presents a sort of crossroads mood; you've taken stock of your situation and now you're ready to take a step towards a direction.

Guster – Come Downstairs And Say Hello Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with the analysis on wanting to get out of a rut and becoming better. This seems to be a common theme with Guster. Two Points for Honesty?

My favorite part, for which I will play this song over and over again:

Voices calling from a yellow road
To come downstairs and say hello
Don't be shy, just say hello

No other verse can rival the energy and power of his voice in this one. It's that top of your lungs stuff that really gets me.

The Whigs – Right Hand On My Heart Lyrics 15 years ago
Love this song, I keep playing it over and over. I love the energy behind "right hand on my HEART." It seems like an address to someone, that maybe things aren't exactly perfect, but his intentions are true. Maybe they're not in love yet but it'll definitely happen. The fallen leaves and raindrops from heaven set the tone of "don't worry, there's an eventuality to things," and the chorus applies that to the relationship.

In another week, promise?
In another year, I promise.
Put your right hand on my heart.

saccharine_smile, i agree. she's cheating on him, and they can only end it. i think she means apologies from both sides: from her because she cheated, from him because of the emotional problems they had in the relationship that caused her to cheat. this song is so powerfully delivered.

Iron & Wine – Boy with a Coin Lyrics 16 years ago
right. i admire people for trying to see the positive side to this song, but it's unnecessary. in life, you don't always see the bright side of things--it's impossible. sometimes a song will just be pessimistic because that's how the artist feels at the time.

the image i get of god circling the earth reminds me of things in orbit and how they never touch the earth again, except due to a mistake or an extremely great passage of time. sure, god is still there, but he is not of much use to these characters.

also, this is not a valuable coin, just as the dead bird isn't valuable but rather worthless. the boy in jeans makes a wish on the coin, like one would on an eyelash perhaps, and then throws it away. he doesn't want this small consolation at the expense of the car crash. also, in times of impoverishing war (and we know it is one because which affluent countries use trade magazines?), a single coin is probably worth less than toilet paper.

by going to a town that all of us burn, the boy enters the "real world," which is only so terrible because all of us, even the best of us at times, burn the good things. and the girl's crying at birth, whether it be her own or her child's, shows that she never views [the creation of] life the same way again, if she can lament something so miraculous as a birth.

Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Possess Your Heart Lyrics 16 years ago
this song is really exciting in that it's a totally different concept, sonically, for death cab. it's not really a return to form so much as a retrieval of a feeling or spirit that we knew was present just from hearing transatlanticism or seeing their shows combined with the development witnessed with plans. death cab has always known, i think, how to evoke those subtle but powerful chills with their long instrumental breaks, and i'm really excited to see what this album is going to look like. indie meets 70s acid trip?

this song encompasses everything i love about 3eb: the fast ROCKNROLL excitement, the haunting "doo loo loo loo loo loo loo loo loo" that only stephen jenkins seems to have a feel for, and the ending that takes it down to the poignancy of the moment. going to their nov. 30th concert this year, they opened with this song. i didn't know it but it stood out to me enough to look for it when i got home.

this song is so beautiful. i heard it on pandora - thanks to the guys there! i didn't even really listen to the words - just the beautiful left hand on the piano, her melody, her voice...

the first verse doesn't look right. this is what i hear:

I hid out on the front porch
I LIGHT up in my mind
I looked for me a LOVER
The best one I could find

thanks for putting this up!

Frou Frou – Breathe In Lyrics 17 years ago
wayyy too lighthearted to address date rape. just listen to tori amos's rape song. rape isn't something bubbly like the music for this song.

i liked the flirting idea a lot. the first verse and the chorus reveal how much she likes this guy. the second verse and the bridge: when she tries to be nonchalant/indifferent, to not let him catch on. the problem with hiding your feelings, though, is that often you're very good at it. the results aren't what you wanted, hence "is this it?"

Brand New – Jesus Christ Lyrics 17 years ago
thank god. the different versions were starting to drive me crazy, especially the ones that didn't make any sense...

some parts, i like the other versions better, like "alone" vs. "o lord." but "turn out hate in factories" makes so much more sense than "tongue tied and hate..." or "try n tear down.."

that said, what do you think about brand new making money off of poor diction? hey, whatever keeps the cd prices down, mm?

and this song is amazing. my playcount must be approaching 60...over the span of about a week. hah. the brainwork behind the references, the guitar hook, the growing intensity...and when they change the chord progressions (i guess) at "i know you're coming in the night like a thief"? i probably have listened to this song so many times just for that part till the end.

13 & God – Men of Station Lyrics 18 years ago
"[in] as [much] hell as you"?

despite human inequality, we all suffer. even if you are rich ("of station" meaning "of status"), you are not exempt from pain.

however, it must be noted that if you have less, you will most likely suffer more. the troubles of a millionaire are valid and sad, but they are of course not as bad as a starved person living in a third world country.

so there is validity in all suffering, but that doesn't mean that we should forget about people who suffer more and just write their troubles off with a "c'est la vie."

Death Cab for Cutie – Debate Exposes Doubt Lyrics 18 years ago
okay, let's set the familiar scene that we're agreed on:
ben is sitting somewhere and thinks about how relationships are pretty flawed because they are trite. he talks about how words are overused and how they lose their meaning, and this could be extended to actions too if you wished. he loses faith and decides that it's impossible to love unconditionally.

in walks the perfect couple who does love unconditionally. everyone is jealous of this couple and always will be. ben rethinks his conclusion and then decides that people are more similar than different. he uses facial features to demonstrate his point. look, here's a nose, mouth, eyes...it's harder to name the differences.

why bring this up? because if people are not that different from each other, then that means that that unconditional love isn't nearly so unattainable as thought.

but upon all this "debate," he exposes the "doubt" of his own relationship. yes, there is unconditional love, relationships that are not trite, and therefore purpose and reason in life. however, he falls "once more" (repetition! --> trite action!) by his lover's side. his is not the relationship he wants.

the drop of alcohol numbs them both and distracts them from their problems. their relationship can be compared to the alcohol in that it masks their problems (obviously, there are some there otherwise the relationship wouldn't be so dead and tired). it's as if his lover can drink and not feel the negative effects at all (hangover, disorientation), but ben is "staggering" from the effects. he is affected negatively by the relationship. he sees with "clarity" how his relationship is not good but his lover does not.

The Killers – Andy, You're a Star Lyrics 18 years ago
i think it's someone telling Andy not to worry, that there is more to life than high school. everyone else sees Andy only as this athletic hero, someone attracitve (should be getting all the girls) and popular, but Andy feels more depth than this.

now i'll tell you why i think this.

before each "hey shut up," i think the line is someone else talking to Andy and Andy wants to answer with a "hey shut up [that doesn't matter]." so "on the field, i remember you were incredible" for example. i picture a teacher, a parent, anybody coming up to Andy and the only thing they can say to him is that he was great in his sport. a girl goes to him and asks for his number. "hey shut up." and finally, the PRESSURE that he feels from everyone around him, that he has to "leave your legacy in gold on the plaques that line the hall." hey, shut up.

how do we know that Andy's feelings are more indepth than what people expect? "On the match with the boys, you think you're alone / With the pain that you drain from love" particularly "with the pain that you drain from love"

and then this person lets Andy know that he sees him as more than anyone else sees him ("you're a star in nobody's eyes but mine"). he hopes that Andy doesn't stop at his success in high school. high school is pretty superficial and an athlete with a girl (just "a" girl, not "your" girl or anything that makes this girl special) is also pretty superficial. so "promise me she's not your world" can go on to be "promise me that all this isn't where you'll stop" or something like that.

oh yeah, and this person is a stalker. this we can't ignore. "you think you're alone" and the obsession thing "in nobody's eyes but mine." i definitely find a double meaning in these lines, as you can see, but it's there nonetheless.

finally:
1. if you're bisexual, that means you like both sexes. you can like men and marry a woman.
2. you can't "just tell" a person's sexual preference from watching an interview. you can form a hunch but it's by no means an assured indicator.
3. if you're mormon, you are no longer allowed to have multiple wives (haha, in case you missed the memo).

Say Hi – Dimensions and Verticals Lyrics 18 years ago
oh my goodness, i can't believe that no one else has commented on this song before. i think, out of the couple of say hi to your mom songs that i know, this has the most genius lyrics. the imagery is kind of humorous but i think it conveys a feeling really well - that your world was only so-so before this person came along, but when you did know about them, it just made everything so much more amazing. and because they have this power to make everything wonderful, they also have the power to make it all "stained, awake, and drowned."

of course, you could also compare this to the pro-agnostic argument, that if there is a God, you wouldn't know because we're like a 2-d world and he's the 3rd dimension.

"or at least some chlorophyll making trees?
if i got erased would you even still love me?"

brilliant.

Bright Eyes – At the Bottom of Everything Lyrics 18 years ago
so wonderful. personally, i love the intro more than the song, but i find the song lovely enough. necessary and driving in the point in some more. these people are about to die and when this woman turns to this man for answers, he gives her reassurance of the greatest kind. and then he even sings a song for her. "and then we'll see it! oh we'll see it! we'll see it!" a wonderful first track with all the sun and morning references - tying it in with the album name.

haha. just yesterday, i called my friend and recited the story to him for his birthday. just a little btw. ^_^v

Halloween, Alaska – All The Arms Around You Now Lyrics 18 years ago
i think it has to do with someone who keeps making things worse and creating problems. when this person pushes the button, it all falls into a sea of envy and hate - this person is filled with jealousy and hatred. people will try to support this person but it isn't enough. she's not consistent (i say she just because) - "first you tell me not to fret, then you frighten me again" - she tells him not to worry but still gives him cause to worry. i think she has a depression problem "can't you let the sickness pass?" and she won't let go of it. because of this, "it'll fall, just like you said."

absolutely beautiful. and wow, i definitely didn't catch that walla wrote this one. yes, he should write more lyrics - no question. these are so wonderful and amazing.

a goodbye that has killed you but by now, seeing all, you realize that there is nothing you can do, nothing you can say. things have changed. she "may tire of" him and to him, she is now "something he was not looking for."

i do like overmyhead's interpretation, though. i think that is also quite applicable, and i like how they connected the soul and body to it.

Death Cab for Cutie – What Sarah Said Lyrics 18 years ago
oh, and something small, but i'm OCD like that.

"then the nurse comes round and everyone will lift their heads."

and yes, cwdogg72, i do hear the weird sounds at the end. i also hear the band putting down stuff (a la the tiny vessels --> transatlanticism --> passenger seat transition), so i'm guessing that brothers on a hotel bed was recorded in the same sitting as what sarah said. at least, i hope so. =)

Death Cab for Cutie – What Sarah Said Lyrics 18 years ago
this song is my favorite off the album, by far. so powerful, so sharp, so insightful. wonderfully composed, and the "so who's gonna watch you die?" definitely reminds me of in transatlanticism, "i need you so much cloer. so come on." power in repetition, yes.

as for whyitsjustme and everyone who gave him/her crap...i can understand. emo, these days, has such a bad reputation. i love emo music, but you know that derogatory tone, "ugh that's so emo." i use it myself. "ugh, stop being emo!" i tell myself.

it's not referring to how emotional it makes you. it's referring to the disdain for the whining and complaining. i too was put off when thursdayswaiting labelled this song emo, because death cab is definitely not whining or complaining. if you must label, i'm perfectly happy with indie - emotional but with perspective.

this is the song that will be remembered from this album.

submissions
Northstar – Broken Parachute Lyrics 19 years ago
so far, i have a vague idea of what i think this song means.
first off, i think the song makes a lot more sense when the lines goes "singing, 'la da da da...'"
because then it says "i know somewhere my life won't be like this, pulling out the poison with a kiss from the bottle's lips, singing 'la da da da...'" meaning that his life is horrible now, and he destracts himself from it by drinking and singing, carefree singing as if everything is okay even though it's clear that it isn't.

the first part, i think, is comparing someone to a falling star "a thousand feet in the atmosphere, you're there and losing light, shrinking skin" and as they die, they're "wishing death on worthless liars and beauty queens." i feel like he's saying that this person, this falling star, is so pure, and that for the star to die and not the "worthless liars and beauty queens" is so ridiculous.

then i think he's talking about the cons of city life - the lights burning out their eyes and how the gold and wild things are far far away from there. but where is he? in the city, or at least very close to it, most likely.

so what will he do? take a gun, shoot a hole in the sky, and wait for the piece of sky to come back down and crush him.

run away from the people who only act/pretend (the cast of a show). while he's holding the monsters underneath his bed, he's keeping them away from him but at the same time, he wil forever be terrified of them. so i think he's comparing the cast to the bed monsters. keep them out of sight and then letting loose on the weekends - i sense a feeling of exhaustion.

sarcastic "i win."

more absurd things. not taking shelter during a fight, giving rights to people who don't deserve them, shooting at what you can't see, kiss up to people (kissing the ring..i picture a servant kissing the ring of a king or something), hurt yourself. do all this to run until you die because they won't catch up - they're heartless and closedminded.

between point a and point b are billboards and souvenirs (imagery of a road..). on tour? and the phones won't stop ringing, phone calls that let him know that he's famous. and once he's famous, he's become like all the other celebrities - coldhearted and apathetic, everything he didn't want to become.

yes? no?

i definitely see the "a slow descent" parallels. it makes more sense with correct lyrics. "scream, 'older and wiser, still filled with resentment.' we get it, we get it." lyrically not one of my favorites, but as background music, definitely the one that stood out on the album. actually, it's arguably their most unique sounding song yet.

and does anyone else just love how fred puts so much emotion into his background singing, more so than adam does? mmm. "we're always holding."

Howie Day – Collide Lyrics 19 years ago
Maybe it's because of my situation when I first heard the song, but to me, this song is about a girl who loves this guy a whole lot more than he does her. And he feels absolutely horrible and like a failure because he hurt her, led her on.

It starts off with the two waking, they're in bed together, waking up together. Yay, pretty, happy, sex. "I'm open, your closed" could be taken two different ways. One, that they're opposites, which we have already established. Two, that he was open about his feelings (or lack thereof) which causes her to be closed-mouthed, shy. Even though the guy isn't a leader (and I say guy just because of Howie), the girl will follow him wherever he goes out of her admiration for him. Now that she knows he doesn't feel as passionately for her as she does him, he worries that this girl will be forever sad, thus "I worry I won't see your face light up again."

He berates and consoles himself at the same time. "You screw up," he seems to say to himself, but simultaneously says, "Even the best fall down sometimes," acknowledging that no one is perfect. What makes him an exception? There's doubt in his mind about the situation, but he is still convinced that the two are wrong for each other. They collide. They crash. Upon contact, they break into pieces. I think this is where I get my interpretation because a collision is nothing romantic or gentle or loving but rather wrecks havoc and hurts those involved.

Ah, and here is the leading on. The girl makes an impression on this guy, which sparks their fling. Yet, once it's started, he discovers somehow that she cares so much about him, that he's always on her mind. He's terrified because she's just not on his mind nearly as much. She learns this and falls. I know this part doesn't make any sense, but when he says "out of the back, you fall," I get this image of a girl falling out of the back of a truck or something.

He apologizes. He consoles her, saying, "Don't stop here," meaning, "Don't think that I'm the One. I'm not worth it." Why isn't he worth it? Because "I lost my place." He doesn't know where he stands on things or who he is. But he's trying and is "close behind."

This experience leaves the girl insecure and doubtful of everything, but he sees that she finally understands that they aren't made for each other. "You finally find you and I collide."

Third Eye Blind – God of Wine Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree with Vix, that this is about a girl who (not necessarily raped) had sex in the backseat of a car, which leads to all of the other messed up aspects of her life..everything done excessively: poker/gambling, drinking, and most importantly: depression. The god of wine, I think, just means the presence of alcohol in the situation, not necessarily Dionysus/Bacchus. The girl has too much to drink, gets into the car with some guy, they have sex, and she regrets it. She can't take it back, and this pushes her to drink and wait until "the cells give away and cancels out the day."

On top of all this, you have the boyfriend who wants to be there for her, but her depression just consumes her. She's always sad that it's as if it's "the mood [she was] born into." This makes it impossible for a relationship to work or for him to help her, as hard as he tries.

Sometimes she lets him in but it's not enough, seeing as he "can't keep it all together." This shows that he can't hold her pieces together, neither can he keep himself whole, and so both fall apart.

This girl's madness/depression, he calls it a "siren's song," meaning it's what draws him to her. Sort of a "I want to heal your sorrow" relationship. Her sadness speaks to him. He begins to understand why she is so sad, therefore sees "truth [he] can't erase all alone on [her] face," showing that he's going under too.

Their sadness taints all these beautiful things, like glamourous sunrises. Instead of focusing on how marvelous it is, to them it seems to make everything chaotic.

Then, the couple is broken up. She let him down in some way or other. He finally admits it at the end. "I said it" signifying that he didn't want to say it before but now he will, acknowledging its reality. The god of wine is there again. He's drinking. He's getting sad, and now he's all alone.

He remembers their relationship, remembers how he couldn't help her. He knows that this girl will keep searching for fulfillment, but he consoles himself that there is someone out there who can do the things that he never could do, that there is someone who understand her and will erase her constant sadness.
