I love how they harmonize on "hate crimes". They make that phrase sound so pretty.

Amy Winehouse – Monkey Man (The Maytals cover) Lyrics 18 years ago
I wish I could edit comments! The song was ORIGINALLY by Toots & the Maytals in 1970, and was then covered by The Specials. SO. Anyway, it's a cover. The end.

I mean, it's a little different. Essentially, it's mostly the same and Amy cut out a verse.

This is a cover of Monkey Man by The Specials, but lyrically, it's different.

Ani DiFranco – Lost Woman Song Lyrics 20 years ago
kristen_emo:

I'm not sure what your views have to do with the song. I understand you feel that abortion is wrong and I'm not attacking that opinion. I just don't understand how that adds to what the song means. And as a sidenote, yes, people should step up and take responsibility. But sometimes it's not possible. Sometimes it's safer and more responsible not to bring a child into the world and sometimes people make mistakes. It's not something that should be taken lightly by either camp.

As to what the song actually means, it's about a woman who got an abortion when she was young and is now remembering the experience. She became pregnant and regretted it. Other than the general "I just wasn't ready for a child" she may not have been financially able to care for a child. ("I gave them every penny that I'd saved") She also regretted her relationship with the father. ("I wish he'd never come here with me // In fact, I wish he'd never come near me") She goes into the clinic and is verbally assaulted by people protesting. ("They gathered when they saw me coming // They shouted when they saw me cross") A nurse comforts her through the procedure. ("Under the fierce fluorescent // she offered her hand for me to hold") She also notes that those who protest against abortions don't always offer better choices that are also realistic. ("They keep pounding their fists on reality // hoping it will break")

"Steven A. Douglas was a great debater,
But Abraham Lincoln was the great emancipator"

is my favorite line as well.

Suburban Kids with Biblical Names – Rent-A-Wreck Lyrics 20 years ago
So I listened to this song for about 3 months without even really listening to the words. I just liked the tune. Then I decided I should try to, you know, sing the actual lyrics rather than ba-ba-ba-ing along. It seems to me that this song is about trying to make it in the music industry. To me, the writer is saying that even though we have no money, can't afford food, and have to sleep on strangers' floors while we tour, we love doing this so much that it's wonderful.

I guess.

My favorite line is, "I wanna turn all your dancefloors into a burning inferno of ba-ba."

Also, I'm sure there are mistakes in these lyrics since I really wasn't sure what he was singing at some points but I couldn't find lyrics elsewhere. So let me know if you see an error. (I'm pretty sure "Backdrops made of Dannon" is wrong.)

I wasn't sure of the lyrics for "I noticed she's been listenin'
A lot to Joy Lavition lately" and "I'd rather shoot sun and boys." I just kind of guessed as to what he was singing. If you know the correct lyrics (or have a better guess, haha) let me know. :)

Gregory and the Hawk – A Wish Lyrics 20 years ago
When I first heard the song, it reminded me of that great show, My So-Called Life. It made me, like, think of Angela and Jordan Catalano's like, relationship thing or whatever, you know? ;)

Anyway, I didn't know exactly what she was singing at one point so if you know what "What I have, this mass of dreams of you won't keep me up" is really supposed to be, let me know and I'll change it. I couldn't make it out.

Rilo Kiley – A Man/Me/Then Jim Lyrics 20 years ago
I don't think Jim and the woman were married and that's why he killed himself, getwhatyougive.

The woman selling things says, "I'm surprised you noticed. Well, my husband, he's leaving, and I can't convince him to stay." She didn't want her husband to leave; it was his idea; he had stopped loving her.

Yet Jim's love (Diana) kicked -him- out. It was Diana's idea for them to split. "You can sleep upon my doorstep, you can promise me indifference, Jim. But my mind's made up and I'll never let you in again." She stopped loving -him-.

I do think that maybe (but doubtfully) that Jim -was- married to the woman selling things but that he didn't kill himself because of her. Jim says, "I happened upon my old lover's old house." So it's possible that Jim and the woman selling things were married; Jim divorced the woman selling things because he still felt love for Diana. Then Jim drove past Diana's house and realized that he would never, ever be able to get her love. And that's why he killed himself.

Maybe. Probably not but it would connect the three people/scenes.

Anyway I love this song. It's beautifully performed and so interesting the way it's written.

Listen to H Between Vowels cover. It's a stripped-down acoustics cover of this song. Much better than the original.

Relient K – In Love with the Eighties (Pink Tux to the Prom) Lyrics 20 years ago
These lyrics are more than a little bit wrong. Here's how it actually goes:

So it was Jeremy in 1983
In his Ocean Pacific tee
Who got a bloody knee
On his skateboard
In the half pipe
In the backyard
That Tuesday night.

And I'm only gonna pierce my left ear
And I've been working on this mustache all summer long.
And my favorite band will always be Tears For Fears
And I'm gonna wear a pink tux to the prom.

Cuttin' class through the first flood window --
He's driving fast cuz he never did a thing slow.
And I look up to my big bro
Cuz in the '80s all the ladies grabbed his hand and couldn't let go.

And I'm only gonna pierce my left ear
And I've been working on this mustache all summer long.
And my favorite band will always be Tears For Fears
And I'm gonna wear a pink tux to the prom --
A pink tux to the prom…

Doo-doo-doo-doo-doo.
Pink tux to the prom.
Doo-doo-doo-doo-doo.
Pink tux to the prom.

I am gonna wear
A pink tux to the prom.
Live without a care --
What could possibly go wrong?

When you're the president of the Breakfast Club
And you're not hesitant to fall in love --
To fall in love.

To throw it away to fall in love with the '80s.

I am gonna wear
A pink tux to the prom.
Live without a care --
What could possibly go wrong?

I am gonna wear
A pink tux to the prom.
Live without a care --
Cuz you threw it away
To fall in love…

With the '80s.

Doo-doo-doo-doo-doo.
Doo-doo-doo-doo-doo.
Doo-doo-doo-doo-doo.

Interpol – Stella Was a Diver and She Was Always Down Lyrics 21 years ago
You're all *so* wrong. Hookers? Addicts? Self-esteem? Nah. It's about the Loch Ness Monster and how they are trying to blow Nessie out of the water.

"Last week, Japanese scientists explaced -- placed explosive detonators at the bottom of Lake Loch Ness to blow Nessie out of the water. Sir Curt Godfrey of the Nessie Alliance summoned the help of Scotland's local wizards to cast a protective spell over the lake and its local residents and all those who seek for the peaceful existence of our underwater ally."

Johnny Rockets is a chain of '50s-style diners that are way over-priced. Hello, $5.51 for a grilled cheese?! And they don't even give you a pickle or anything with it? They do have awesome milkshakes.

Uh...

Yeah, I think it's fairly straight-forward, awesome tune, very upbeat and fun. :)

Download the live version of the song if you can. The extra lyrics seem to make that whole "sexual connotation" a little more clear...
