Switchfoot – Crazy In Love (Beyoncé Cover) Lyrics 18 years ago
if you go on itunes they have two podcasts. One is a video podcast the other is hundreds of free bootleg recordings from their live shows. I think this song is on there twice. It's hilarious, Jon doesn't really know the words to the verses. "Na na na na this is the second verse and it's got a lot of words la la something bout a new dress" The instrumentals are actually really good though.

The Killers – Under the Gun Lyrics 19 years ago
I love this song, it's one of my favorites. Here's what I think it means:
This boy in the song has a crush or infatuation on the girl, but I take it he's very immature and thinks he's in love or has become obsessed. The girl is a little walk on the wild side and couldn't be good for him, but he's built her up as this angel in his mind. When he finally gets his chance, his one moment to make her fall in love with him, he totally screws it up.
I imagine that after he kissed her, she laughed at him because she found it pathetic and suddenly, he sees his whole dream life with her shatter and he can't beleive it, he's frozen in devastation. "Crashing cars in his brain/Keep him tied up to a dream/And only she can set him free."
Even, now, he still can't get over it. He's dedicated his whole life(or some extended period of time) to winning over this girl and now he knows he'll never have her. With his life's purpose gone, what can he do but die? It's like Gatsby and Daisy.

Matchbox Twenty – Rest Stop Lyrics 20 years ago
It's this type of song that sets Matchbox Twenty apart from mainstream pop. They're really good with depicting intense emotions and moments with their music. The lyrics are good, but just reading them off the page, they don't carry much power or emotion with them. When I hear them sung, though, it's shocking and moving. This is one of the best songs I've ever heard in terms of making me feel how the narrarator feels.

The Goo Goo Dolls – Better Days Lyrics 20 years ago
Okay, I understand how you could make this song apply to Judaism and Chanukah with a little bit of stretching, but I really see no reason to believe that that was what Johnny intended it to be about. It's okay if that's what it means to you, but it's a bit out of line to say "I cannot believe how wrong you are" and then have no real evidence to back up your statements.

Bon Jovi – I Wanna Be Loved Lyrics 20 years ago
I think this song is mostly self explanatory. He doesn't want to live a life without meaning or purpose and he thinks love can give him that so he's willing to give up everything for love now. Does anyone else think this song sometimes sounds like "Turn" by Travis?

The Goo Goo Dolls – Better Days Lyrics 20 years ago
I submitted the completed version of the lyrics, but I couldn't tell if he was saying "boxes" or "boxers" in the second stanza so I went with boxes.

Anyway, the release of this single took me by complete surprise. They haven't gone back to the good years of "A Boy Named Goo" and "Superstar Carwash," but it's also not as bad as "Give a Little Bit". *shudders* Yeah, it's anoher cheesy ballad, but I can definitley sense some enormous amounts of maturity that I've never heard in Johnny before. This could be good lyrically, but it could also be bad musically. Hopefully, Robby will have plenty of old-Goo-style, hard-guitar songs for us on the new album. It could make for an interesting balance or a scattered, disconnected mess. We'll just have to wait and see.

Switchfoot – Easier Than Love Lyrics 20 years ago
I think that line is talking about immature teenagers who protest censorship and call cussing freedom of speech and think their parents are trying to control them by telling them not to do drugs or have sex. It makes me think of those freshmen with bloodshot eyes wearing Bob Marley shirts or mini skirts who have no idea who or where they are and can't remember what they did last night to save their lives. Those people annoy me.

Switchfoot – Lonely Nation Lyrics 20 years ago
"We are slaves of what we want."
I absolutely love that line. It's so true. We're no longer driven by need, now we're driven by greed. Hey, that rhymed! Anyway, I think this is a great song about how our greed only makes us lonely and we think getting more things will cure the lonliness. It's a circle that never ends.

Switchfoot – The Blues Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is beautiful. It means so much I can't even begin to put it into words. It's incredible. I didn't like it the first time I heard it, but when I /really/ listened to it, it was incredible. I think it has really nice flow to the next song, too.

Ben Folds – The Ascent Of Stan Lyrics 20 years ago
I don't think that this song is necessarily about Stan selling out or becoming evil. I think it's about growing up, realizing you were wrong and the inevitable cycle of authority. This guy, Stan, in my mind, was the leader of a political revolution, One that hated "the man" and authority in general. The revolution succeeded, so what did they do then? They made Stan "the man". Even if they got rid of authority and government, they would have eventually realized that they needed order; they needed authority.

Now Stan is in charge, with all of this responsibility. He's making decisions other people don't like because they can't understand them. Now they're protesting and rallying against /him/. “How’s it feel to be the man? It’s no fun to be the man.” Now Stan realizes that things aren’t as simple as they seem from the outside. Actually being in charge isn’t as easy as protesting. Sticking to your original beliefs isn’t at the possible. Stan has ascended to the top, but not in a positive way. He can see things no one else can; he can see consequences for his actions. He can see opposing views. He makes decisions based on this and people don’t like it because they can’t see what he sees.

I like this song. Everytime I see people wearing anarchy t-shirts or talking about how all government sucks, I think of it.

Billy Joel – Scenes From An Italian Restaurant Lyrics 20 years ago
I love this song. Billy Joel is definitley not referring to drugs, it's just his accent. He sounds a bit breathy, but I've met North Eastern people who talk like that sometimes. It's normal, I've literally been listening to him since I was born.

The Goo Goo Dolls – Give a Little Bit (Supertramp cover) Lyrics 20 years ago
I own all of the Goo Goo Dolls' CDs and I love all of their songs... except the covers. This may be one of the worst songs on the radio these days. Johnny is an incredible songwriter, but ever since Dizzy Up the Girl, it seems like all he wants is radio hits.
Everytime I hear a new single since then, they sound more and more like they're crafted to appease the mainstream and billboard charts. I hope he'll go back to songs like A Boy Named Goo and Superstar Carwash for the next album, but this cover is not making me feel very optimistic.

Les Misérables – I Dreamed A Dream Lyrics 20 years ago
"in the musical you never know who "he" is"
Well, she never flat out says it, but it's pretty obvious from the lyrics:
"He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came."

Victor Hugo wrote the book while he was exiled from France for 20 or so years. So, yes, the book was originally in French, but the musical was written by Englishmen, I beleive. It premeired in 1985, and this year is the 20th anniversary.

"Les Miserables -isn't- about the French Revolution (at least the musical) it's about love."
Obviously, it has a lot to do about love, but you obviously can't have a musical that's just about one thing. Les Mis is primarily about the French Revution, but it's also about love, truth, right and wrong, justice, judgement, and other things.

Fantine is a very young mother, she was immature enough, by no fault of her own, to be wooed by the cheap lies and cliches of a young man just looking for a fling. She fets pregnant and he leaves her. Her life changes with the seasons. She does what she must to stay alive and must give away her child, the only thing left in her life, because it is best for Cosette.

This is Hugo's effective way of manipulating emotions to get his point across. Like most people in France at that time, Fantine lived in poverty. She is a young, single mother, however, so the audience's pity grows. We see that she is still very innocent and immature, the only thing she's ever done wrong. Everyone is that vulnerable at some point, but Fantine must pay for it with everything she holds dear. In the end, I don't think she ever grows up completely, but her enduring innocence enchants the audience.

The Goo Goo Dolls – On The Lie Lyrics 20 years ago
So, about the song. Superstar carwash was a major steppingstone in their aforementioned transition. That's apparent in some of it's great songs such as this one. It's fast-paced with a great hard guitar solo near the end. He's not screaming cuss words and blatant insults. He's definitley making jabs at some things most people do and Hollywood, but it's done much better. He makes jokes and turns a girl's pathetic attempt to impress or woo him against her. He seems to give up on the jokes when he gets to Hollywood, but the lyrics and rhyme work well so it's better he didn't try to force a joke.

Most of Johnny's songs can't really be summarized into meaning any one thing. Not to mention, most of the meaning can be found in the music and his voice, too. If you've ever seen them perform a song live, you know how it just brings everything home.

This song comes off as just a shot at life and all the things about it that he's sick of. It's not angry or screaming, though. It's much calmer and accepting of the fact that you could revolutionize the whole world, but you can never change basic human nature. He seems mellow and very over it, laid back and sarcastic. it's a look-back on adolesence: "And I never got serious/Til everything went black./And I ain't so curious/About ever going back." He sees mistakes he made and his silly behavior in these other people, but merely watches and responds cynically to their predictable behavior. He knows they'll get over it eventually.

Meaning of "On the Lie"? I'm not really sure. Teenage idols these days encourage teens to rebel against their parents and high school, despite how good or bad they are to them. They tell them to question everything incessently except, of course, the idols themselves. They create this cult-like world where "If you do what my lyrics say, you'll be unique and your life will suddenly have purpose". These kids are conforming to and living on this lie, being just like everyone else their age, but thinking they're doing the exact opposite.

The Goo Goo Dolls – On The Lie Lyrics 20 years ago
This is one of my favorite songs. I have it on their compilation album, "What I Learned About Ego, Opinion, Art & Commerce". It's also on "Superstar Car Wash". This song is from 1993, back when they weren't as popular and were crazier. What's interesting about EOAC is that the congs are in order from the most recent at that time ("Dizzy Up the Girl") all the way back to 1987 with their self-titled debut album. As you go further back into their career, you notice many things. The songs become much more hard rock and such (many of Robbie's songs still retain the hard rock qualities). You can even hear Johnny's voice regress back to that of an angry, big-haired teenager enjoying the advantages of the greatest career track any kid could imagine (traces of big hair may still be observed on Robby). His music goes from plees to a girl he cares about to get her act together (All Eyes On Me) to meaningless angry teenage anthems like Up Yours.

I love the Goo Goo Dolls, but I am very thankfull that they've grown up since Jed. Sure, some songs like Iris and Slide were probably calculated to fit snugly in the radio top 40, but we can forgive them for that because that's how most of us discovered them. (don't get upset at me because I didn't know of them until they went mainstream. It's not my fault, I wasn' alive when they released their first 2 albums). EOAC is a necessity for anyone just getting into GGD. It's not a Greatist Hits album, by the way, it's practically the opposite.

Bon Jovi – Two Story Town Lyrics 21 years ago
Well, I also live in a small town and, even though I love it, I can still relate to this song. You have to remember not to take artists literally. I think this song is more about life in general. Nothing ever changes, people never learn. When you turn on the TV everyday, it's always the same old body count with different names.
Also, I'm being raised in a conveyor belt family where everyone goes to a small college and becomes a lawyer. I want to break out of the cycle and major in math or science at some place like Duke or UNC. Jon Bon Jovi was born in the North East. I don't see him literally writing about a small town. He leaves that to Mellencamp(who does it well).
