| Matthew Sweet – Divine Intervention Lyrics
| 20 years ago

I completely disagree with the above poster. This isn't being sarcastic. This is being honest. All of us have doubted faith at one point in life. In the first stanza, he has lost everything. Without a home you have nothing. The only thing that could save him at this point is Divine Intervention.
Second Stanza is more of the same. One day everything is good, and then it all falls apart. What kind of God would let this happen?
Third verse is even worse. Now serious doubt has taken place. You can imagine a child asking a question like "If God really exists, why does he let people die?". Same concept here. If there is a God why does bad things happen...
But then the final verse....Finally we remember our faith and our love in God. He is there and the sun is shining again in our lives. Yes there is destruction. Yes there are problems. But God shines his love and light on us still!
Its very uplifting! And I think its important to note that this God doesn't necessarily have to be Yahweh. Maybe this God is Vishnu. Maybe Allah. Maybe Jesus......Its not important what God it is......just have faith! |

This has always been at the top of my favorites list. No particular reason. Its cute, but fairly straight ahead R&B. For some reason though, this song just reminds me of my youth, working on homework, and singing this song as it came on the radio. Gives me those old sweet memories. |

What a beautiful song and feeling. She's the one....completes, fulfills, beckons, loves and calls.
All he is, is because of her. There is no separation. They are one. "I was her, She was me". Its really beautiful.
I hate being single. |

Seems to be a song about a man leaving his family behind for an affair with a "blond hair blue eye girl". Because the name Carmella, I automatically associate this song to the Soprano's. This seems to be a song about Tony Soprano! That rat bastard. he needs to get whacked. |

I first heard this song, when I was in love with a woman named Sam. She always rained. It was gorgeous, and placed my entire relationship in perspective. We aren't together anymore. She rained so much, that it flooded. |

This song, with the movie High Fidelity, really help me through tough times in love. Like Cupid above, I think this song is about that moment when love is new, and full of opportunity and promise. This is the one! This is the love I always dreamed of! Time hasn't yet changed or corrupted things. I love this song! |

This is the song that reminds me of my divorce. I wanted to end it so bad. I was just tired of her and her ways. She would come and go, and just expect me to be there waiting, like it was no big deal. I was filled with anger, hurt feelings. And when we finally split. I wanted her back so bad, that I was willing to take her back regardless of her infidelities and problems. |

Well, Clapton did say that this entire album was about Boyd. So, I assume that this song is about her. But it does make sense that this song is multi-layered. He was so mired in drugs and alchohol to take away his pain of Boyd/Harrison issue. To me, this song represents this love that he knows is bad. It will hurt, its not healthy, and damnit.....he can't help it! Imagine that is how he feels about Boyd and about the drugs. he knows it will ruin everything, but he just wants her so bad that he is willing to "crawl across the floor" for the love. In the end, he acknowledges that time will pass, and the love will burn itself out. Anything this passionate will burn out. Honestly, this is my all time favorite Clapton song. Oh side note....play this song to your girl, and you are guaranteed a good time in bed! |

This song has helped me through many life disasters and tragedies. And seems to be the truest feelings of George. All things will pass. Time, life and karma will wipe away all things, and new ones will grow from the pain. Brilliant! |

Actually, George was multi-religion. He clearly stated that in many interviews. His first religion was Christianity, but of course he grew to love Hinduism. No doubt Maharishi influenced George in many ways. I think the import thing in this song is not what God it is for or about. The idea here is spirituality, and giving yourself over to a higher power. When he chants the different Gods, it is a way of him saying, It doesn't matter who you believe.....just believe! Beautiful, and shows George's great skill at slide guitar work. A true gem. |

Wow. Another Harrison masterpiece. I think this song proves that Harrison and Lennon were the best songwriters in the Beatles. This song just screams about all the pain he and Patti Boyd were going through. Or is it about the break up of the Beatles? Or both? I also think that with George's spirituality, he can see this song as a way that we break the heart of our God by being obstinate. This is a truly layered song, and just breaks my heart. It is a shame that more cannot see George's work the way I do. |
