| Nobody's mentioned the term "punch drunk" as meaning down or depressed from repeated blows... sorta like nothing's gone ur way lately and ur in a type of dazed depression as a result. In this regard the song reminds me more of Aqueous Transmission as Brandon seems to just be drifting about trying to get back where he belongs... sorta like "floating down a river named emotion" and trying to "make it back to shore or drift into the unknown." But hey, it depends on how u listen to Aqueous Trans... I like the Deep Inside connection, too, though. Definitely an awesome song and a shame it wasn't put on the US/UK version of Light Grenades (which is still kickass)... | |

| To me.. at least how i relate to the song.. is that brandon is so beautifully saying "bad moods/hair days/zits/troubles are temporary but pictures/memories/fun can "survive" so smile because you want to and WILL remember the good times not that you had a bad hair day. Its a simple look at the song but I think this song very cleverly and more deeply expresses this basic idea. | |

| I'm not surprised at the sound of this new song really.. (In my opinion, the song's "feeling" is reminiscent of Pantomime for some reason) It's slightly relaxing/powerful at the same time. I thought, however, they'd come out with something a little "harder" for their first single BUT I have to say they grow every single time they make a new cd. This album is without a doubt going to be amazing and I am extremely excited!!! Looks like the interpretations so far have been thorough as far as I can tell... so I just wanted to concur that Incubus rules all. p.s. Brandon Boyd is a genius. | |

The more I think about this song the more I feel like Brandon Boyd is saying that it's human nature to being loving (despite what Hobbes/Locke may say) and he "wonders how we've strayed so far from this." I think he's saying that out of fear (thats where the title comes from) humans have turned against our nature and become leery and distrustful.. even violent to the point of eventually causing our own demise... "You, sir, may have forgotten how good your world could be. So put down your hollow tips and kiss your lover's lips and know that fate is what we make of it. Please end this Before this ends us!" I also think he's touching on humans simply turning away from their fear by "staying inside for good" BUT the narrator says, in all his wisdom, "That WINCING in the floes is on par with reading with my eyes closed." AKA People should get out and face their fears and not let any fear (whatever it is) hold them down!! "What can I do?? You say, Its just another day in the life of apes with ego trips" I think he's sorta calling for people to revert to our simpler nature of loving and not fearing or possibly refering to egotistical assholes who use fear to keep us down *NO PRESIDENT'S NAMES PLEASE* But, like always, Brandon Boyd's abstract lyrics give the listeners a chance to personally interpret a song and relate the song to themselves--the true genius of making a good song. |

Yes, pantomime plays were a form of theatre where one man--using only his body--re enacted a story without words. This is important to know.. But the song isn't SET AT one of these plays..what are u talking about?? Just b/c you've taken a Humanities course doesn't mean you know what this song means.. obviously. You're lookin at it waaay too literally! I dont think ANY of you have this song's meaning right... which is a shame b/c it's beautiful!! There is so much more to it than anyone's said so far. Again.. its NOT set at a pantomime play.. that's outlandish!! The basic theme is: "actions speak louder than words" OR. as it goes in the song "You say more by saying nothing at all" Boyd starts off in the song pretty broadly saying "Words are too messy" and that people put too much emphasis on words when a word's meaning can be confusing and sometimes misleading. Instead, he theorizes, people should be LIKE a pantomime and not limit themselves to words. People should use actions more often than words to express themselves b/c actions are more clear and effective. Boyd then gets more specific and begins to apply this theory to love. He expresses his love for a woman, and his sexual fantasies. He says "show me your heresy and I'll show u mine." (heresy is a crime against church and in this context I believe he means sex without intent on creating a baby) Ohh lala. Boyd also says "avant garde" which means "to the right" or "not normal" in French. (in artistic context the expression means new and unique) Therefore, by saying "avant garde art" Boyd is refering to the new way of expressing yourself with actions. Boyd goes further and explains that the two are so perfect for one another than they "only speak in pantomime" b/c they can read each other's thoughts and feelings without the use of words.. and then summarizes using a carpet ride as a metaphor for their love and life in general. The last verse is a more detailed description of his sexual fantasies of this woman.. "In my fantasy, you look good entwined in my hair and skin and spit and sweat and spilled red wine" (its true pantomimes used red wine to signify blood in their plays) He ends up saying "I'm your pantomime. I'll just move my hands. I promise you'll see what I mean" AKA "let me show u how much I love you by having awesome sex." This song is very sexy, and very awesome. |
