I can't believe nobody has commented on this! One of the best most intelligent songs ever. Shows you how much Frank despised religion, if you couldn't tell from his other songs. |

The album this is off of, Joes Garage was about how much it would suck if there were no music. Eventually the central scruitinizer (the government) makes music illegal and joe gets put in jail. Great album a must have. |

Yup. Zappa was a genius. If you ever get a chance to listen to his song "jesus thinks you're a jerk" I'm not sure if it was ever on any albums, I only have a version bootleged from a concert. |

It's great. I love this line:
I got a forty dollar bill say you can't make me cum
makes me laugh every time i listen to it |

lol. I think it's more of an insult to them.... later in the album mary enters a wet t-shirt contest where the announcer says something like "mary's the kind of red blooded american girl who will do anything.... and I mean ANYTHING for 50 bucks" then something about her needing the money to get home to her dad who's waiting in the toolshed |

No, it's an anti-drug song. Frank was opposed to that.... The guy trys to sell him drugs from his shaving kit:
He said, for a nominal service charge,
I could reach nervonna t'nite
If I was ready, willing 'n able
To pay him his regular fee
"There was nothin' his box won't do
With the oil of Afro-dytee
An' the dust of the Grand Wazoo
He said:
"You might not believe this, little fella, but it'll cure your Asthma too!"
frank tells him to get bent, takes his crystal ball and robs him. |

Frank is my god. I think more jocks and rich pricks could benefit from having their balls cut off. Find out that deep down they really like S&M and being peed on. |

| Steely Dan – Charlie Freak Lyrics

Great song. Very moving. Basically it's one person telling a story to a homeless person about how he met a homeless man (Charlie Freak) and bought his only possession (gold ring) from him for a little money so he could eat. But Charlie was also an addict and bought drugs with it instead and overdosed and died. When he heard about it he couldn't stand the guilt and gave the ring back to him. So he brings this person home with him to try and help him rather than giving him money. |

I think you're wrong.... this song IS about buffett. Something like 90% of his songs are autobiographical. At one point in his life he smuggled weed into the keys on a boat. I think it was after he left Texas. |

yeah. John Kay wrote it... some of you are full of shit. He wasn't hallucinating either, didn't do psychadelics. Listen to the pusher. Steppenwolf has tons of great songs other than just this and born to be wild. |

They wouldn't play this song on the radio because they said it promoted drugs. It's a great song though and obviously about how the people selling grass aren't bad but people pushing hard drugs are monsters (as John Kay puts it). |

I agree. The part about plastic rocks and bleeding onto the streets is about selling crack.... which is commonly refered to as plastic rocks and can be found in parking lots. |

Not just this song, but the entire album Meddle is great! The best Floyd album in my opinion. Makes more sence while on shrooms tho. |
