| Eric Clapton – Layla Lyrics

Maybe 98% of all songs ever written are about love, but most of them ring false. I think "Layla" is one of the few that hits it right on. It captures the way being in love can be glorious and painful at the same time, and the way Clapton screams her name is incredible, almost like she's a pagan goddess. |

| Mountain – Mississippi Queen Lyrics

According to Corky Laing, the writer of 'Mississippi Queen': Back in August of '69, we were playing at a funky beach club called 30 Acres. It was the hottest summer ever in Nantucket, and one night the power blew [out] across the entire island! ... A buddy of mine had a girlfriend with him at the club who was visiting from Mississippi. She had on a see-through dress -- I can still remember this; she was amazing! Look, there were also Dexedrine in my system, and I was on overdrive. I looked at this beautiful girl and began screaming this song, 'cause there was no power. |

| Pearl Jam – Better Man Lyrics

The genius of this song is found in the ambiguity of the lyrics. Is she laying there on the bed thinking, "I love him so much, I couldn't find a better man" or is she lying to herself about loving him because she can't find anyone better? |

| Eminem – When I'm Gone Lyrics

This song is fantastic on so many levels -- there is real depth in the emotions that he is expressing. Eminem says he would "give an arm" for his daughter, and then castigates himself for abusing her mother, "who's the spittin image of her". While trying to give Hailie the life he never had, he deprives her of time with her father, becoming "the main source of her pain". In his nightmare, Haillie tells him it's too late, "go out there and show [the fans] that you love em more than us", i.e. that he's been lavishing the love that he should've been reserving for his family on his fans. He symbolically suicides his Slim Shady persona, and awakens to a better life, with Kim and Haillie and Laney. |

| KoЯn – Faget Lyrics

I love "Faget", it's easy in KoRn's top five. Most rock bands sing about how tough they are, or how many babes they get, and here KoRn puts out a great song about gaybashing. I like that they tried to do something a little different. |

It sounds like to me the girl was abused as a child (sexually?). The guy just wants her to be happy and comfortable, and is angry that God allows her suffering. |

| Type O Negative – Black Sabbath (From the Satanic Perspective) Lyrics

This is a great atmospheric song. It starts off with a slow burn, but when the guitars kick in and Pete sings, "This is just the start my friends", it's just this incredible release. This also my favorite song to crank up in my car when I'm driving down the road -- when you stop at a red light with "Ave, ave, SATANAS" blaring, you get some interesting looks from the people in the car next to you! |

| Type O Negative – Stay Out Of My Dreams Lyrics

There just aren't enough incestuous love songs. Goth-metal god Pete Steele is in love with a lady who haunts his dreams, and who's resemblence to him brings to mind thoughts of kinky, sinful incest. |

I love this song, and the video is so bitter-sweet. Laney and Hailie are beautiful. They're obviously huge, huge parts of his life. |

This song is incredible! The crunching guitars and Danzig's voice are acocalyptic. You can almost smell the fire and brimstone. This is a perfect song from start to finish. |

| KoЯn – Did My Time Lyrics

I love KoRn, and this is my personal favorite song from them. I think Jonathan Davis is insanely talented, and I just love the way his voice soars on "Did My Time."
quiffporn, you picked the wrong band to compare them to. Adema's (ex) leader singer, Mark Chavez, is Jonathan Davis' half-brother! So of course their voices sound alike. And KoRn is a great band, they've been in the industry for 15-some-odd years now and are still putting out albums and headlining tours.
My own interpretation of "Did My Time" is this guy is feeling persecuted for his individuality. He's tried to be normal, tried to be like what everyone wants him to be, but it didn't work. |
