Arcade Fire – Abraham's Daughter Lyrics 12 years ago
I don't know how well does arcade fire know jewish interpatation of the bible, but a famous one is about abraham having a daughter: Genesis 24:1 - And the Lord had blessed Abraham in everything - some says that this sentence implies that he had a daughter but not a son, and others say that "everything" is actually this daughter's name. Which fits the lyrics where the daugher says she has no name.

Eddie From Ohio – The Three Fine Daughters Of Farmer Brown Lyrics 18 years ago
It sounds a bit like a sailors song to me. The rythem is similar to a sea shanty, and the lyrics also speak about sea (or river, in this case) fairytale. The three daughters represent the three promises for sailors, which are fights (nellie), love (dottie) and salvation (becca). And it is no wonder that their voices are those who lure sailors to wreck and drown.

Great Big Sea – General Taylor Lyrics 19 years ago
This is a song about Zachary Taylor, the 12th president of the United States.

It's original lyrics were about a battle in the American-Mexian war over Texas, between the American army led by Taylor and the Mexican led by Santa Anna. But this version seems to be just about his death, many years after.

keme, you're right. Thanks. It does make sense now.
Which, along with blood makes noise and bad wisdom, gives a very depressing view of Suzanne. I wonder.

Jewel – Do You Lyrics 20 years ago
This song, like other songs of this album, is about the lost of innocence. Only in this song she is angry about the lost, and accuse people of forgetting what it's like to be pure hearted and innocence.

Jewel – Deep Water Lyrics 20 years ago
I agree with kaira - this song is about depression. Actually, about depression caused by loneliness. "wake yp making love to a wall", to me, is when you had a dream where you had a lover, and wake up to realize you are still alone.
And the feeling you are going nowhere, meaning you have no love for a very long time.

Suzanne Vega – Undertow Lyrics 20 years ago
I went to a her concert once, and before she sang this song she said something like 'This song is for a group of people, who know who they are'. Well, I dont. Does anyone here have an idea?

Jane Siberry – Calling All Angels Lyrics 20 years ago
Definetly an overwhelming song, if you hear it in the right mood. It was one of the few times I almost cried in a movie, when this was played in pay it forward.

Alabama 3 – Woke Up This Morning Lyrics 20 years ago
This is an excellent song. It speaks about suicide, about the real feeling you get after a bad night when you feel you lost all meaning for life, not because some tragedy, but simply because you see no point in living. You have for a very long time.

And what makes it even greater that it gets a different meaning in the Sopranos - about a regular day job of Tony. If you add to it the fact that Tony has suicidical thoughts as well, you realize why the Sopranos is such a great show.

I must say this is a very fun song. Not very deep or anything; But fun.

10,000 Maniacs – Trouble Me Lyrics 20 years ago
I always wondered whether this song is adressed to a lover or to a child. On one hand, the song describe what I think of as being a true relationship - to speak, to open up your lover, to share with him your troubles. On the other, the line "Let me send you off to sleep with a 'there, there, now, stop your turning and tossing'" makes me think of a mother trying to get her child to speak to her, to share his trouble and worries with her.

10,000 Maniacs – Like The Weather Lyrics 20 years ago
I think this is more than just depression - it's about sickness, and being very tired of life. And she needs someone to pull her out - to return her into her better days.

The surprising thing is that the music is actually happy, or at least danceable. Surprising, since listening to the lyrics does not make you want to dance...

Scorpions – Wind Of Change Lyrics 20 years ago
Simonlee is really wrong: As mentioned above me, the first two lines refer to the famous park in Moscow, and ceratinly not to some nazi/jewish conflict. Since I actually understand hebrew, I can say for sure that Gorky park has nothing to do with "til I die".

Really. The stuff that people say here.

Scorpions – Send Me An Angel Lyrics 20 years ago
I wonder. The morning star is, after all,Lucifer. So why in this song its land is referred to as the land of the angels? If it weren't for that, I'd say that thissong is about finding back your faith (perhaps while dying. There are several lines which can be interperted as if the speaker is dying).

They Might Be Giants – Lucky Ball & Chain Lyrics 20 years ago
This is actually my favorite tmbg song. Partly because I don't know too much of them, but mainly because this is the one where they actualy make sense, without needing to read their site.

He speaks about his girlfriend (ball&chain), who left him because she couldn't stand his blabbering and weirdness. And he is angry with her for that, but mostly he hates himself, and thinking he doesn't deserve her.

Suzanne Vega – Rock in This Pocket (Song of David) Lyrics 20 years ago
Well, this is an easy one, since I heard Suzzane herself saying this is about David and Golaith (she also explained that contrary to a question some reporter asked her, it is not about the size of someone penis).

But for me, when I hear this song, I remember Sam and Frodo crossing the land of Mordor. It seems to fit there.

I think this song is about TV. About how it causes the people watching it to go numb and stupid. It is written in the point of view of the TV managers, saying "We give them what they want".

Suzanne Vega – Tom's Diner Lyrics 20 years ago
I also agree with bellevedette. This song has more levels than simply the plot - it symbolizes the feelings of lonely person in modern society. The structure of the song is also meaningful - for example, when she sais "Does she see me?" in the end of one verse, leaving hope that someone is actually looking for her, but immidiately afterwards denies that hope. Or when the man behind he counter says "it is always nice to see you", but only in the next verse we are dissapointed to find out he is really saying it to the woman who had come in.

I have a friend who, after hearing this song, got himself to buy all of 10k CDs. It really is an amazing song. It describes so accurately the feelings you get when leacing someone you have been with for a long time, not because of some event but simply because you realize yor feelings for him are over.

Jewel – Life Uncommon Lyrics 21 years ago
Jewel has many religious songs, this one including. It appears in many of her songs, like Hands and Innocence Maintained. But her faith seems so pure and simple, that you don't really think of it as religion but as a universal message.

Jewel – Jupiter Lyrics 21 years ago
To me, this songs speaks about very sensual love, of and growing woman to her man. What makes it so good is the feeling you get of love after many years, where he still makes her feel young.

And "Love is a flame neither timid nor tame" is one of my favorites quotes from a song.

Suzanne Vega – Left Of Center Lyrics 21 years ago
My favorite among her songs. Speaks about loving someone that is very popular, but who doesn't know about you. She wants him to notice her, standing at the edges and looking at him, and she is imagining to herself that he and she must be very similar, and if he could just see... And she speaks about his friends, who notice her staring and how she is trying to avoid them but really wants to be one of their group, but couldn't.

It also got into another movie - The truth about cats and dogs, with Janeane Garofalo and Uma Thurman. I really loved this movie, and finding this song for it's soundtrack was a wonderfull treat, since it really fitted in.

Suzanne Vega – The Queen And The Soldier Lyrics 21 years ago
I have always thought of this song as a simple ballad, which is why I loved it so much. There is not enough writers who can write a true ballad, but she is definately one. That is why the interpertation of lostinspace surprised me - I did not see the metaphore.
And I still have trouble with some of it's parts - for example, why is she saying to him that You won'y understand? and why is he saying that he just want to mary a young woman he doesn't understand, and speaks to her as Your Highness?
The plain intepertation of this song, as a tragic story, is still more beautifull in my view.

Suzanne Vega – Bad Wisdom Lyrics 21 years ago
Very sad song. Each verse tells the story of a diferent child that messed up it's life - the first on early pregnency (mother the doctor knows something is wrong but he doesn't ask the right question), the second on drug addiction (I'm falen through the crack and there's no getting back) and the last on suiside attempt (mother I'll cut at the root like a wead - cutting the wrists). The last verse is especially chilling, with it's comparison to a prostitute (I will pay for my life with my body) - but here, it means that her body will pay for here life.

Suzanne Vega – As A Child Lyrics 21 years ago
Excellent site! I recently got here from google, and it is exactly as a lyrics site should be - the lyrics followed by a discussion on their meanings.

Since Suzanne Vega is my favorite artist, I think I'll start with her, and this song also (since it is the first on the list which I like...).

The song had a very powefull influence on me on a certain time. It speaks about growing up, and getting yourself a life of your own. It starts on your childhood, where you see your doll and imagine it has a life, and ends with you going out to the world, ready for your own life.
have to admit though that the second verse is a bit difficult for me, and I could not relate it to the song. Anyone?
